As well as agreeing with everything everyone has said above about the Spectator magazine (which, incidentally, has published articles praising the Wehrmacht, defending the Greek neo-fascist party Golden Dawn, arguing there's 'not nearly enough Islamophobia within the Tory party', it's worth pointing out the shallowness of its political positions. Generally, as a conservative magazine it celebrates the individual's right to accumulate wealth and celebrates the pursuit of self-interest as the driver of human advance. But if a wealthy person attempts to make the world a fairer place, they will be castigated. It's arguments against redistribution of wealth are a cynical accusation of hypocrisy - "you're rich but you claim to care about the poor!!!" (or else a cynical accusation of 'the politics of envy' if it's not a millionaire).
either rr has been caught out by the old speech mark + close bracket = winking smiley, or he is advocating for more islamophobia in the tory party...you decide.

Rashford setting a very dangerous precedent that we can actually help those less fortunate rather than vilifying them.
Good to see that's being nipped in the bud early by Boris and his chums. Else us plebs will get ideas.
Nothing new here
Marcus is doing well in every sense, he is doing everything right. The sort of role model the youth of the 21st Century need.
The Spectator wants a piece of Marcus' success story by putting a vile spin on things. Typical money grabbing media. What's new?!

Arrghh the number of times I've done that over the years!
Marcus does not need to justify his commercial deals. He's a professional footballer with a lot pull for top brands who want to associate themselves with him.
Marcus is a champion for the downtrodden, under fed youth of our country. He is making money irrespective of his charitable efforts not because of it.
Marcus does not need to justify anything.

Been caught out by the smiley or just accidentally advocated islamophobia in general?
They’ll bottle it now they’ve seen the backlash. Just like the PM.

The Spectator, on the other hand, is purely altruistic and would never sully themselves by taking money from partners.
It probably looked like a very safe editorial decision; there's no chance of alienating any of their readership, and they would have wanted it to generate just enough controversy to generate headlines and keep them relevant.
It may backfire now and become part of the larger debate about the move away from traditional one-nation Conservatism to the politics of division and playing to the Brexit crowd that the government are currently engaged in. Marcus has played a blinder in cutting them off at the knees here.

I'm not familiar with The Spectator article.

Surely it can only be positive given that he currently sits at the very top of the Sunday Times’ Giving List having donated more to charity than any other single British individual through the pandemic?

Well my thought exactly. It would be commercial suicide to paint Rashford as someone in it for himself. I doubt anyone would begrudge him making some extra money along the way. 🤷♂️
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If the ST are to be believed, he actually gave more money to charity last year than his current net wealth.
Rashford should spend less time aligning with brands and more time learning how to take a penalty
