I think this is too simplistic in respect of who is behind who.
Liverpool suffered last season because of injuries, to several key players, all at once. It simply will not happen again that they will lose 4,5,6 home games on the bounce. Unless of course they suffer another series of injuries.
But then that could happen to any team.
Chelsea didn’t just win a cup. They won the champions league. And their record under Tuchel since he joined has stepped them up a level, not only to compete at the highest level, but win at the highest level.
City, simply by virtue of the fact that they are current champions are the team to beat as far as the league is concerned (at least).
So United finished 2nd last season. And runners up in a European second rate competition. United have won nothing yet under Ole and with the current set of players. Winning nothing but getting close doesn’t automatically result in a better season next time around.
If we take it on an objective level, United are behind City (prem winners), Liverpool (previous prem winners), Chelsea (CL winners).
Yes it could be a building block towards steady progress . But Over the last 9 years, United have been in this position before and not progressed any further.
You are behind the aforementioned teams because those teams have won the 1st rate competitons, whereas United haven’t won any of them in almost a decade.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------------------------------------
So did DiMatteo take them up a level to win at the highest level? Lamp and had them severely underperforming so Tuchels turnaround is slightly exaggerated given they looked clueless before. A few losses and Roman will be done with TT just like the rest.
Liverpool also absolutely bottled a title defense, a few injuries was not an excuse for that level of implosion in January. As things stand their squad as stagnated and not improved and everyone’s another year older so I don’t think you saying oh look what they did 2 years ago is as relevant when we’re talking about where the two sides are headed.
City are a league winning machine no doubt and United are clearly behind City.

yes so VVD injury was the reason taa couldn't pick out a team mate to save his life. makes total sense.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Maybe the fact that we didn’t only lose VVD, we also lost Joe Gomez and Matip. All of our first team centre backs gone for the season, our midfield then moved back to centre back. That meant that not only did we lose or centrebacks, we also lost our midfield!
Confidence drained out of the team and out form nose dived, add in the fact that Jordan Henderson does a lot of the fullbacks running and covering (we lost him to a season ending injury to) and it’s easy to see how players were affected.
until the end of the season when most clubs either went on holiday or were focussing on their latter stage European / domestic cup competitions Liverpool were on track to be the worst defending champions.

yes but how does that explain TAA not being able to find a team mate, irrespective of who that team mate was?
your midfield has never been creative and when you were losing you were only conceding one. you simply weren't scoring with mane out of form, firming never scoring and again your main creative outlet woefully out of form.
having VVD back will be great, and signing a new cb with the other 2 sick notes should mean you dont have that issue again.
but youre also hoping TAA & Mane rediscovers their form or some quality reinforcements are added.
otherwise with Wijnaldum gone, your squad has stagnated.

=====================================
Even during a really poor season by their standards, Liverpool were the form team for the first 18 games of last season, and the last 10 games of last season.
Of course injuries had a huge impact on their season.
Your in for a rude awakening if you think United have jumped Liverpool, and are now City's main rivals for the PL title. 🙂

Uh they had at least 10 different CB pairing throughout last season and constant tweaks like that will hurt the team's shape and players' forms.
Sorta like how Luke Shaw was awful when Maguire went down with that ankle injury.
Look I get we all like to LAL but writing them off before the season started is silly.
LFC have apparently put in bids for Chiesa and Niguez. If they end up signing those two, then everybody is behind them.

Don’t disagree with that but you initially stated an injury to van dijk resulted in Trent not being to find a team mate and that we had a few injuries.
That’s where i disagree with you, we were destroyed with injuries last season and I’m prepared to put our season down to that.
You seem fixated on Trents poor form and him not being able to hit a team mate.
Trent - 2 goals and 7 assists last season.
Shaw - 1 goal and 5 assists last season.
City, Liverpool and Chelsea all have top, highly regarded, CL winning managers. This obviously makes a difference in how the teams' potential are viewed.
Lfc had a terrible season thanks to Pickford taking out Vvd, yet still managed to finish just 5 points behind us conceding 2 fewer goals.
Chelsea were solid at the back as soon as Tuchel took over. Something for them to build on.
In the end, this comes down to whether your judging the strength of the squads, or the teams as a whole.

I think that’s fair. Though the thing is it doesn’t always translate to where teams end up being placed in the league.
Chelsea have often been a curious case in this regard. They’ve often finished below teams in the league that you wouldn’t have expected them to at the start of the season - but then they go on an win a trophy anyway.
Still quite a few question marks over Chelsea, Liverpool and United going into this coming season.
City are the only one I think most will be confident of them achieving about what you’d expect them to. They’re the only truly consistent team in the league.

Cavani Greenwood Rashford Sancho Martial is stronger than Salah, Mane, Firmino, Jota, Origi for me. Not by a lot but we just edge it now for me.

I get it's a hard situation because apart from defending your owners constantly he hasn't done a bad job by any means, but as the biggest club in the country he has to start winning stuff sooner rather than later.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
yes but how does that explain TAA not being able to find a team mate, irrespective of who that team mate was?
your midfield has never been creative and when you were losing you were only conceding one. you simply weren't scoring with mane out of form, firming never scoring and again your main creative outlet woefully out of form.
having VVD back will be great, and signing a new cb with the other 2 sick notes should mean you dont have that issue again.
but youre also hoping TAA & Mane rediscovers their form or some quality reinforcements are added.
otherwise with Wijnaldum gone, your squad has stagnated.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
👏👏👏👏👏
The other 2 I disagree.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Anyone who compares Di Matteo to Tuchel circumstances don't know what they are talking about.
They lifted the same trophy and that's about where the comparisions end.

=====================================

Why would an Arsenal fan be better placed in a relegation thread?
It doesn’t matter who anyone supports. They can all have an opinion (just as valid as the next person) in regards to a conversation regarding the chances of the top teams.
Your responses on this thread are bizarre. And come across as a tad insecure.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Says the City who who has just made a really insecure post a few comments up.
This is the first season under Ole where I think we go into it with a better team than Liverpool. And I think we are much much closer to City too. Of course all that could change when the Sheikh flexes his bank card but I'm happy with things at my club.
Sancho, Varane, Maguire, Shaw, Bruno, Greenwood, Cavani, Rashford......it's a good time to be a red again.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What insecure post was that?

Liverpool's problem was their CBs being out forced their attacking fullbacks to rein it in a little bit. Attacking output decreased to compensate their defence.

If United appointed Conte and brought him a wingback I'd genuinely have you down as favourites.
OGS is good for a rebuild and a top four finish but he just ain't it for titles especially with the managers he's competing with.

Probably Ole. But then we've tried going with LVG and Jose and it didn't work. Ole has brought the club together more than both of them.
I'd rather have our front line than Chelsea's though. I'd rather have our defence too.

In fact I'd rather have our forward line than Liverpool's too.
Cavani Greenwood Rashford Sancho Martial is stronger than Salah, Mane, Firmino, Jota, Origi for me. Not by a lot but we just edge it now for me.

Yes I do think, OGS has done a good job building the team you have now got but it's absolutely criminal he hasn't won a single cup yet.
I get it's a hard situation because apart from defending your owners constantly he hasn't done a bad job by any means, but as the biggest club in the country he has to start winning stuff sooner rather than later.
