Fact of the matter is Villa have signed Buendia Ings and Bailey. 2 of which were signed after we signed Gollini and Gil. They've also known Grealish was leaving for a while. So arguably taken them longer to make their plans.

I'm not envious of Villa even though some might be.

It’s not about envy, the issue is simple: the season starts in little over a week and the only recognisable striker we have is Son. Bergwijn and Lucas can’t play as out and out strikers, Son isn’t great at it either. The one striker we do have does not want to be at the club and won’t even train.

This. This is the issue here. None of these players are strikers and I don’t care what anyone says, Son is not a striker and never will be. Spurs better have stuff in place if Harry is indeed leaving because it will spell disaster if we start running around on deadline day trying to desperately find strikers. Can you imagine ?

We will end up blowing £30m on Josh King.

We absolutely have to start casting our net now, identify someone quickly and then go against the ingrained habits and conclude quickly. - we won’t though, we never do

Nope and this is my worry. If we are keeping Harry, fine but we need to rebuild around him. Need to sort this mess out now

This is how i think our strategy has worked.

Firstly, we will have a budget. So far we have spent £75m (about net £50-60m) so i'd suggest this is, more or less, what has been made available before sales.....and lets be honest, its a decent sum of money.

Secondly, our new DoF reportedly has a style of identifying several players in the positions we want to fill and begins conversations on all of them before a decision is made (this will explain the massive amount of links we have had).

Thirdly, the defence is the priority and we had seemingly focussed on Kounde and Romero as our top targets. We will probably announce the latter today.

Fourth - we will be looking to off load players and looking for swaps where possible. This happened with Gil & Lamela and our Kounde interest also seemed to include Sanchez going the other way.

Fifth - with £75m spent, what we can afford in other positions (CB & RB and maybe FWD) will depend on what sales go out. Critical to this is Kane. Whether or not we have an additional £130-£150m to spend will have a massive impact on the quality of player we bring in in these other positions. With somewhere around £60 also possible from Aurier, Dier, Sanchez, Sisokko.

The Kane situation adds massive uncertainty to our decision making and timing of deals. Time will tell but once it becomes clear what is happening with him you'd expect our decision making to be crystalised.

And, BTW, Chelsea were linked heavily with Kounde a couple weeks ago. That deal looks possible, but CFC are not willing to pay the 80m euro release and are trying to include Zouma in a swap deal. Spurs are not alone in trying to negotiate the best deal possible and taking their time to do so.

*£60m although £60 might be more realistic for those 4!

I read yday we were offered Ings but he wanted £150k a week. Villa were prepared to pay it and he went.

Such a good deal for them.

He is also 29 and given a 3year +1 deal. Thats a long deal for someone of that age, and with a bit of a injury history.

I’d say he is worth that, it’s a 3 year deal it’s not like Villa will be financially crippled if it doesn’t work out

He is good for two seasons at least. Even if he scored 13-15 goals a season and is injured for a month or two it is still a great deal. Very good player.

100 per cent correct. Spurs priority has to be defenders. Even without Kane, Spurs still have enough in the team to score plenty. But the priority has to be CB firstly before spending lots of money on another striker.

I agree. I think he would have been a great signing alongside a younger player for the future, but would have been surprised if he signed if Kane stayed.

Its been an age old problem that with Kane at Spurs, we have struggled to get back up as they know they may struggle to get game time. We lost out on players like Morata for that reason, may be a bullet dodged there though.

Felix, scoring goals is the hardest job in football, defences are more about systems, strikers are about out and out ability.

The top teams always prioritise attacking players as generally that is where the game is won and lost. If Kane was staying and Happy then I would agree with you - but he is not

Last three seasons Ings has scored this many Prem goals

2018/19 - 7
2019/20 - 22
2020/21 - 12

So other than one season where he scored 22, the best other season he has had in the top flight was 12 goals.

Son has equalled or outscored him in every season bar one for the past five years.

Ings is a decent player, but you aint going to get any more goals out of him that what Spurs already have. Sensible decision not to spend £30 million on him.

The point is Sandy we currently have no recognised striker. Vinicius has gone. Harry Kane hasn’t even returned to training and let’s be honest, regardless of the situation, he won’t be making the City game. Son isn’t a striker. I don’t give a s** about his goals mate, Son will never be a striker. I love Son but his best position is from out wide, which is where he gets most of his goals from. Going into the season without a recognised striker is a shambles mate sorry. Yes, I totally agree the defence is a must. I have been banging on about the defence for ages but at the moment, this Romero hasn’t officially signed. So, apart from a back up goal keeper, please tell me officially what we have done with the defence ? Apart from sell our best defender that is

Don, do we buy a striker now, with whatever money we have and match Ings deal of 4 years on £150k a week (29 years old), or do we wait to see if we have an extra £150m to spend.

I would have liked Ings but there is no certainty he would have come to us and if we have a much bigger budget then he would not be the best option anyway.

We have no striker right now because Kane has decided to go awol, in breach of his contract.
