Looking back at the origin of this post any one who lived through the seventies will remember that most of the problems were created because the unions had too much power. Maggie sorted that out but now we have gone too far the other way and the bosses have too much power. Hopefully brexit and the loss of cheap labour will bring us back to a situation where the worker have more power and better wages. Things go in cycles and I think this is what is happening now. It will take time but in the long run workers will be better off.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Lest we forget, the last three day week was also under a Tory government.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes a conservative government but even James Callaghan had similar problems. As I said the unions had too much power then and now the bosses have too much power. This is now being rectified in the current cycle.

————————
First of all, there was a motion to increase the minimum wage. Tories voted against it.

The “bosses” as you call them are whom you would call the ultimate land owners or providers of capital.

Brexit has placed more power in fewer hands. So, as seen from this Serco malfeasance, the “bosses” as you call them have to influence fewer people to ensure the system stays rigged in their favour.

That’s due to Brexit, placing law making and executive powers in the hands of people like Boris Johnson, Priti Patel, Dominic Rabb.

Your penchant for Brexit being placed on hope is ultimately destined to fail. You’re hoping these people do the right thing, when all they’ve done is fail miserably at anything but enriching their friends and mislead the nation.

Brexit is, and will always be, a mistake brought about by the very influencers i mention.

Giving false hope that causes a lot of people to vote against their interests. You will see an erosion of workers rights.

You city people and remainers just don’t understand what working people want and that is one reason Labour will never be in power again.

———————
So you want £37bn frittered away to Tory party friends for a track and trace system that doesn’t work?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Did I say that. No I didn’t. Sadly whoever is in power money will be wasted on their friends or people they know. If you think it would be different under a different government I think history tells us it wouldn’t.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hang on, so you’re effectively saying that the Tories can do whatever they like and they will always have your vote.

So, tell us, what is it that you and the working people that you speak for want?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Again I need to correct you. Did I say I voted for the conservatives or would in future. No I didn’t. Read it again I am just saying all politicians look after their friends and people they know. Labour or Liberals would be exactly the same.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You didn’t answer the question posed, what is it that you and the working people that you speak for want?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I want nothing. Apart from problems created by the pandemic I am contented with what is happening in the country apart form panic/scare stories made by the press. Things are not perfect but I believe we are heading in the right direction as per my previous comments in this post.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Heading in the right direction? 200,000 Covid deaths and counting, fuel, food and medicine shortages and a massive rise in inflation?

What’s the plan, to become Soviet era Russia ffs?

Are we begging for drivers? I suspect this is just done to appease the papers and people like yourself. It will make little difference, Christmas will still happen and there will be very few shortages other than those caused by the global pandemic. Some people hope for the worst and the media like to create panic but if you look at your life has much changed. Sadly the government caves in to every scare story fuelling the panic.

Oh yes the supermarkets and haulage associations are calling out for drivers…

And…

This government is going to provide access to drivers from the EU. Is that really the right direction you claimed? That after saying we don’t need labour from europe, that the government has been forced into this emergency measure?

Btw with regards to medicines, there is a medicines shortage for specialist treatments, the cancer patients are not receiving the care they need due to not shortage of the medicines needed.

Thing is you’re basing all of your arguments on what you see, so you’re not seeing very much past the end of your nose.

They are calling out for drivers because they prefer cheap labour to paying a rate that would attract drivers back to the job. The government are weak but calling for labour from Europe is just to appease the media and will make little difference. I am no expert and have little knowledge on the shortages of medicines but I have not read about the shortages you refer to. I am willing to be convinced if you can give me a link to a genuine story or stories.

Some 10,500 lorry drivers and poultry workers are to receive temporary UK visas as the government seeks to limit disruption in the run-up to Christmas.

The government confirmed that 5,000 foreign drivers will be eligible to work in the UK for three months, until Christmas Eve.

The scheme is also being extended to 5,500 poultry workers.

We spent the best part of five years degrading hard working foreigners who did the jobs that your typical Brit was too ‘proud’ to do, fecked them off, and now are begging to get them back.

Hope they stick two fingers up at the Tory cuuunts, Christmas can be ruined so the deluded amongst us can have their eyes opened.

It appears everyone on here is a remainer . Well I voted for brexit as did almost everyone I know. I don’t live in the city and I am still working age as are most people I know. I hear you all talking about the crisis we are in but I do not recognise this. Yes the pandemic has created a healthcare crisis but other than that what is the problem. Admittedly everyone I know works and or is retired so I don’t know if any of them claim universal credit as they have never said but some of them are lorry drivers and are beginning to be paid the money they deserve now we cannot rely on cheap foreign labour. The same will have to happen to vegetable and fruit pickers because the firms and farms will now have to pay proper wages. Yes inflation will rise a bit but wages will increase more. As for shortages I ordered 65 items from Tesco Friday and they all turned up. I have half a tank of petrol and when I need to top up in the middle of the week I bet the crises will be over because the idiots that are panic buying will have run out of space for fuel and supplies are not short. Not one person I know that voted for Brexit regrets it or would vote differently now. You city people and remainers just don’t understand what working people want and that is one reason Labour will never be in power again.

So many smug posters in here. There will have been many, many people that voted for Brexit purely to spite the condescending know-it-alls such as yourselves. Not saying that's a sensible reason to vote for something but you should be careful how you engage with others of different viewpoints as you will alienate them further and drive them to the opposite extreme by being arrogant and smug.

I voted Brexit for left-wing concerns about the undercutting of worker's wages, multi-nationals using Ireland for example as a tax haven, and at the time I thought Corbyn had a chance of winning an election and I believe he would have overseen Brexit in a much more humane, considered way - but we're all racist idiots who believed that bus slogan right?

The data shows 20% of the 100k HGV drivers we are short on in the UK is due to the missing foreign drivers. The other 80% is covid-related and the decades long trend towards the transport industry needing young people to replace the old but not getting the uptake they want. So that's not really down to Brexit is it?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Undercutting of workers wages was down to companies being happy enough to pay their workers absolute pennies for hard labour, has feck all to do with the EU.

There’s a farm in Lincolnshire that was advertising a broccoli picking job yesterday for ‘up to £30’ an hour. Why wasn’t this farm advertising this sort of wage before? Because they’re desperate for staff.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I have zero sympathy for that farm as they would have been exploiting European workers and paying them the bare minimum for years and years and now they're having to up the wage to try and recruit local people, and so they should.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Good, so it’s got nothing to die with the EU but the poverty wages this country offers to people.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You don't think the fact that firms/farms could ship over cheap European labour by the dozens has anything to do with the EU?

So many remainers are happy to conveniently ignore the exploited working class workers until suddenly their fruit and veg isn't available. The EU allows continued exploitation. Now these farms and companies will have to up the worker's wage or face folding, and rightly so.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And who do you think these firms will pass the cost of that on to ? Oh yes, the consumer. Hope the so called Red Wall voters have plenty in their savings accounts.
