Call it luck or call it CR7, no way we deserved anything from the game.
….
Sorry but this just is t true.

sometimes I must watch a different game to others.
I think a draw was a fair result in the end. All away games in the CL are tough. A point we would have taken on the day the balls were drawn out of the vase if we are honest.

Especially as we now only need a draw in Spain and a home win against Young Boys to actually win the group now! Knowing United, we'll make it more difficult than it has to be but still a great position to be in with two games remaining

I worry for the game in Spain. But you have got to fancy United to win the group.

Villarreal are draw specialists and these matches are usually bores. It would be nice to get the win and seal qualification but I'd settle for the bore draw against them for once.

Without ronaldo we would most definitely be looking at europa league football again
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's really impossible to substantiate this kind of counter-factual. With the actual performances we've had with Ronaldo in the team, there's no doubt that his goals have been absolutely crucial to coming away with more points that we deserve after four matches. However, while we can pretty much agree that Solskjaer hasn't been good enough in terms of how far he's taken us in three years, no one can credibly deny that at times during his tenure United have played substantially better than they have been over the last two months. We're playing worse football than we were last season, despite having a stronger squad. In the present timeline, Sancho hasn't torn up any trees. But if we're making claims that we'd be in the Europa League now without Ronaldo, we have to ask ourselves how Sancho might be playing if he'd already had three months playing regularly on the right (the position he was signed for!) as part of a front line full of pace and movement. I doubt we'd have a single striker on five CL goals, but I don't think we can confidently say our build up play would be just as insipid as it has been in this timeline.
Deserved draw or not? - On balance of chances I don't think Atalanta were robbed, but I thought they were by far the better side in terms of controlling the game and in 35 minutes to chase the game we never really did anything to suggest we could carve them open to create that equaliser. I thought we were very poor.
For some reason I always thought there was something in that game for us last night even if we weren't playing that well.
We certainly need to play better moving forward but it is concerning that after three years Ole still doesn't have a way of getting us to play solid, balanced attacking/defensive football.
I think that's because it was Atalanta, and you know they'll give you a chance. It took two absolutely top drawer finishes to break them though, so you can't even say they defended that badly.
I'd have taken 2-2 before kick off if it had been offered.

Yes that's probably why but I did feel there was space there if we played it right. Shame it took right until the end!

Whilst I understand the points that you make & have made about Ronaldo (and note that you obviously acknowledge his contributions in terms of goals and important goals) joining us, I still don’t get how you arrive at the conclusion that you didn’t particularly want him and that he’s perhaps not an overall net benefit to us (if this isn’t exactly how you feel apologies).
Whilst playing poorly and providing very little, he is exactly who I would want up front for us.
Whilst playing well and providing plenty he would most likely just score more and more (his record speaks for itself in that counter factual)
He’s not long term, we all know this. He doesn’t track back and/or press properly, we all know this. But no-one else can finish like he can with so few chances.
I think our problems are elsewhere. We’re playing mostly with a front three - all of which want to score goals. They’re not providers and none of them (rash ron mason) are workhorses.
Rooney Ronaldo Tévez worked so well not only because of their incredible talent but we had Rooney & Tévez who would work their arrises off. Ronaldo never did really.
We’ve got too many players in the team who don’t run themselves into the ground for 90 mins every week. This is down the players & the manager.
