melton because there's so many random excuses coming out here
e.g Rafiq was only 19, he was stupid, its not the same
doesn't matter what age the white players were, its abhorrent
Rafiq said it in a private message with a friend, its not the same, no-one was hurt
doesn't matter that the white players thought it was banter, in any circumstance that language is abhorrent
etc etc
Rafiq just like Ballance is guilty of being racist. he is a part of the problem he exposed.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And like I said earlier, the longer we have that immature a discussion about it, the longer the issue will remain.

no it doesn't. But to say other young players like ballance used discriminatory language is a major offense at 19 but its ok for him to do it.
that just plain and simple hypocrisy.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But nobody said its ok. He's had to admit it and apologise instead of the excuses, whataboutery and finger pointing we see from other entities.
Have to be careful around this topic as people make up a lot of sheet to look like they're making a valid point.

very confused by people angry at the racist behavior of Yorkshire players and wanting harsh punishment but seemingly separating Rafiq who was a Yorkshire player being racist?
kinda feels like some on this board are starting to show signs of bias here based on the races of those accused.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You seem to be confusing the situation yourself to be fair. Rafiq doesn’t want any punishment for Balance, for example, he wants an apology for the intent as well as the language. What he’s actually said is if that happened, then Balance should play again and not be vilified.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's not upto him to decide what the punishment should be.

Thinking back I'm cringing now at some of the words we used to use when at school. I'd never use them in that context now so I suppose people can change.
We used to call players who hogged the ball 'Jews' in school and we used to go to the P*ki shop (guy was actually Indian) for snacks. We also called one of my Dad's mates 'Dafydd Ddu' (Black David) on account of him being black and called Dafydd (he actually doesn't mind it). Being 99% white in our town we didn't know these words could hurt people.
It's a bad look for Rafiq this but this shouldn't take away from the investigation into Yorkshire. As people have mentioned above there are levels to this.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Heard the shop one. The Jew one is a new one.
Differentiating between 2 Daves by Black / White i wouldn't say is racist.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No. He doesn't mind it as a nickname but only by people he's friends with. Which is fair enough. As he says he's black and he's called Dafydd so it's a fact and he knows people don't mean any harm with it.

That's very similar to the town I grew up in in terms of the language used and names given. None of it was malicious, but as you grow up you realise its not acceptable. When you are younger and have little experience of the world you don't always see the harm in such things.

Yeah. As you get more worldly wise you get more knowledge and experience.
The worse racism I've seen though is by a couple of Indian lads I worked with in Rugby. They'd be slagging the Pakistani workers off big time as well as calling thr Albanian workers $kum and thieves. In my first job away from the small town I grew up in it was quite the eye opener!

Two things have not changed over the last 48 hours.
1) Yorkshire CCC is institutionally racist.
2) Azeem Rafiq is an anti-semetic hypocrite.
The two are not connected and two wrongs don't make a right.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Number 2 has changed, or did you know he was anti semitic 48 hours ago ?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I didnt even know who he was 48 hrs ago. It isn't about me. 48 hrs ago his Facebook account proved that he was anti-semetic. He still is and now he is famousr and people have investigated his socilal media output he has now had to apologise for that today.
Number 2 has not changed. He just got found out.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The opinion of him has changed from victim to part of the problem.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
For some maybe.
Not me.
The problem in question is Yorkshire CCC being racist.
The fact that he is an anti-semetic is a new question that has nothing to do with the Yorkshire CCC question.
They probably are anti semetic, too. It would'nt surprise me.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So you don't think Rafiq was part of the problem at the club?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
no.
Unless there were also a group of jewish cricketers at YCCC trying to establish themselves, who Rafiq and his mates gave a hard time to in the dressing room and on coach trips. But I havent heard anyone say that there were, or even make allegations against YCCC that they were being discriminated against.

Depends in the context. Everyone would call theocal shop the p@ki shop when I was a kid. The owner is actually Indian. Despite the name for the shop he was and still is highly respected by everyone on the estate. I've never heard anyone say anything bad about him and a few residents that moved into the estate from the city and gave him trouble have been run off the estate by the community. I think a lot of people my age will have used that kind of language because they've heard the older generation using it.

Used to live across the road from a lady from Northern Ireland. Everyone used to call her 'Irish Jean'. She just accepted it and it became the norm.
Looking back it was quite bad and no-one should have referred to like that.
Her name was Patricia.
Elvis. I remember Del Boy using it in OFAH. In context there should be bo reason at all why P*ki is a slur. It's just a shorter version of Pakistani. Not too dissimilar to Brit IMO. The guy we knew was liked as well but, and this isn't an excuse, because he was 'exotic' looking and we were pretty naive/ignorant the name stuck. Nowadays though I'd be surprised to hear it.

what is funny is that Balance and Co at YCCC can call Rafiq an Elephant Washer yet many match attending football supporters in England can call Adebayor's dad one, (and his mother worse) in song, without any reprecussions.
The first comment is about Rafiq and calling him a hypocrite for deeming what Balance did was a major offence though, that’s what I was referring to, he’s neither wanting Balance penalised for a major offence or thinking what he said is ok.
Ive read through this thread and haven’t seen a single comment on this thread saying Balance or the other players named should be punished severely

'the curse of the evil eye' which means a person any person casting an evil eye shall have his face blackened.
to which he shared 'if evil eye would result in a blackface, 90% of our relatives would've been African ' accompanied with half a dozen laughing emojis and the comment 'made my night'

no jewish players at YCC means that its impossible for anti-semitic comments to be part of a wider racism issue.

I mean people of all ethnicities being put off by racism.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
What about those that chose not to pursue a career in the game due to the underlying racism ?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The underlying racism that’s only just been exposed and Yorkshire initially denied? How many soothsayers do you think were potentially put off?

this is new one, the old if a tree falls in the wood and no one is around does it make a sound excuse.
no jewish players at YCC means that its impossible for anti-semitic comments to be part of a wider racism issue.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
are there Jewish players at YCCC?
You tell me, I have no idea.

melton because there's so many random excuses coming out here
e.g Rafiq was only 19, he was stupid, its not the same
doesn't matter what age the white players were, its abhorrent
Rafiq said it in a private message with a friend, its not the same, no-one was hurt
doesn't matter that the white players thought it was banter, in any circumstance that language is abhorrent
etc etc
Rafiq just like Ballance is guilty of being racist. he is a part of the problem he exposed.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And like I said earlier, the longer we have that immature a discussion about it, the longer the issue will remain.

that just plain and simple hypocrisy.

Ive read through this thread and haven’t seen a single comment on this thread saying Balance or the other players named should be punished severely

no it doesn't.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He didn't confess. He was outed. Just like the other guys
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Did I say he confessed?
Holy crap.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He didn't admit it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes he did. He also apologised. There's a difference between a confession and admission. I don't know where the confession business came from as I never said he confessed.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
He could hardly deny it when faced with evidence.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
this is new one, the old if a tree falls in the wood and no one is around does it make a sound excuse.
no jewish players at YCC means that its impossible for anti-semitic comments to be part of a wider racism issue.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
What about those that chose not to pursue a career in the game due to the underlying racism ?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You mean people of Asian descent that choose not to persue a career in cricket or football because of underlying racism?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I mean people of all ethnicities being put off by racism.

The underlying racism that’s only just been exposed and Yorkshire initially denied? How many soothsayers do you think were potentially put off?
