There isn’t much future for a player pushing 38 so stay or go personally I’m not too bothered either way but the love in for Martial I just cannot get my head around.
…
I don’t think it is so much a love in for Martial but more as people can see the team benefit of Martial compared to Ronaldo.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Would be interesting to see if every top team in Europe was offered Martial or Ronaldo for free next year which one they would pick
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They wouldn’t be picking Ronaldo for any kind of team benefit. Commercial maybe.
No top teams are cuing up for him at the moment, so this should tell you something.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There is a huge cost in taking on Ronaldo but he is a far superior talent to Martial who has shown just as little team ethic in many ways as Ronaldo, personally I wouldn’t be looking at either of them as the future.

I’m not sure it’s a rapid decline he scored 24 goals in a team that was garbage front to back.
I don’t like the way he has played the club this summer his ego has got the better of him and we don’t need the drama but in a good team he will still score plenty.
Martial I just don’t trust and I don’t think is good enough, he wouldn’t even be in the discussion if Greenwood wasn’t such a waste of life and talent.

Chances are Martial is gonna be shiiiit this season as he was shiiit the season before Ronaldo joined so can’t really use that as an excuse. The thing that does give me hope is that we actually have a decent manager now so hopefully he can wage his magic wand over Martial as this is his last chance to make it at United. Fingers crossed he does.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He wasn't as good as the season before, but still managed 7 goals and 10 assists in 26 games when played as a CF. And we finished 2nd.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not sure where you get the stats from. I have 7 goals in 36 games. Didn’t score a PL goal until December and only got 2 PL goals after the Christmas period all season. It was a terrible season for him. Rash and Bruno did the legwork with support work from Greenwood.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We did play better with Martial in the team, though. Even though Cavani scored more goals, we never looked as good with him starting.
Any update lads? I need to form an opinion on whether I want him to stay or go, based on which is more likely. Thanks. https://www.ja606.co.uk/pages/smileys/

Only 4 of those goals came when he was playing as a CF though.
It’s clear that 20/21 season was a step down in quality for Marrial which continued into his time at Sevilla where the fans quickly grew tired of his lacksidadical style and not so great performances.
I do hope and suspect we’ll get a better Martial this season under SCTH but no one should be too surprised if this is another false dawn. Would be great if it wasn’t though 👍

Soccerbase
He scored 7 goals all season but against
Saints (2) Cavani started as the striker and Martial was on the left
https://www.soccerbase.com/players/player.sd?player_id=68556&season_id=153
Edit, my mistake - he played centrally against Villa so 5 goals as a CF.
We'd definitely be complacent to assume Martial is BACK. The only thing I'd urge is open-mindedness that he just could perform at a high level if he's well managed, with a coach who makes him feel special and understands what role will get the most out of his abilities. I think it's clear by now that he's not a player through sheer force of self-belief who will elevate his game in unfavourable conditions.
Paradoxically, given that flakiness, I'd have more faith in him if Ronaldo left and we had a junior understudy, rather than keeping him as cover for Ronaldo. Perhaps either way we need a young forward who is a good second choice now and ready to compete for a starting spot soon.
My thoughts on Ronaldo are very clear, you keep a player like him if you can.
Where I stop short however is begging him to stay and bringing in Ferguson. I think this is a perfect opportunity for Ten Hag to stamp his mark and tell him to do one, which I fully support.
It goes without saying we are in for another tough season. Anyone that is excited because they have seenMartial banging them in pre season should genuinely wake up!!!!

I don't think that anyone has said they are excited at seeing Martial banging them in pre-season. We have all seen too many false dawns. It is just that some of us thing we will be better as a team with him rather than Ronaldo. But I don't think that anyone believes he is the ultimate answer.
Nothing silly about being optimistic about a player performing.

Perhaps, or someone that is ready to compete that may not be at the level we really need long term.
Getting rid of Ronaldo should be the first thing to do, and then we can work from there. May be that signing Antony and having Rashford and Martial compete for a cf position may be something to look at.
As we’ve discussed on the other thread, having positional flexibility is something that ten Hag seems to be in favour of - the static Ronaldo doesn’t fit into that.
If Utd were so close to turning it round entirely I would be more keen to keep Ronnie but if we're honest it's going to a 2-3 season job?
Love Ronnie but I'd let him leave, get a longer term player in, this season if possible and move forward towards where we want, need to be, having him for one more season wont move us along as a team, he might score a few goals in fact I'd wager he would but for me, and obvs imo only the bigger picture needs addressing
Why is there even a negotiation? He wants out... Get him out!
Love you SAF but fack off!
As we’ve discussed on the other thread, having positional flexibility is something that ten Hag seems to be in favour of - the static Ronaldo doesn’t fit into that.
--------------------------------------------------------
Dazza, this totally chimes with my preconceptions about Ronaldo and Ten Hag's football... and yet to the best of our knowledge ETH seems to want to keep Ronaldo. Maybe that's his public position in case we end up keeping him, and in private he wants Ronaldo out. But part of me, despite everything, is intrigued at how Ten Hag, the pragmatist, would plan to get the most out of Ronaldo.
If it were any other player than Ronaldo I’d take what he’s saying at face value, but I’m sure he’s well aware of just how big and powerful a personality like Ronaldo is at United, that he’ll need to manage things carefully with him.
Which is the biggest facking problem. I suspect Ronaldo could be a really useful player for us if he weren’t such a priiiiiick.
He’s just not going to accept having to put in the work off the ball to be a regular, nor accept being a more rotational player.
I still have worries about the dressing room and his presence just increases those fears. Plus I just don’t enjoy watching him play anymore for the most part. He’s Javier Hernandez on steroids. It’s boring, I want us to play with flair.
Agree with all that Dazza. One potential ray of hope is that with the WC looming, the legacy-obsessed Ronaldo might be open to a club role that keeps him fresh for national duty. And if no elite clubs are remotely interested in him, is it possible he'll start to be a bit more realistic about his place in the footballing hierarchy?

He wasn't as good as the season before, but still managed 7 goals and 10 assists in 26 games when played as a CF. And we finished 2nd.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not sure where you get the stats from. I have 7 goals in 36 games. Didn’t score a PL goal until December and only got 2 PL goals after the Christmas period all season. It was a terrible season for him. Rash and Bruno did the legwork with support work from Greenwood.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He played 26 games as CF Robb. That is the position we are talking about.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Only 4 of those goals came when he was playing as a CF though.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not according to transfer market. Where did you get them from?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Soccerbase
He scored 7 goals all season but against
Saints (2) Cavani started as the striker and Martial was on the left

Do you think it is too early for McNeil? There has been a lot of noise about him the last few weeks.
