The energy you use today will have been bought 5 years ago. Let’s say at 50p
If, for some reason, an energy company ran out and needed to buy energy “on the day” today it would cost an awful lot more - let’s say £2.
The price cap is set on the “on the day” price. This is why the companies are absolutely creaming it in and why the price cap is a joke.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I might look up what my bill for the past month was 5 years ago and just pay that amount. Seems fair.

Now that is an important issue.
The world has gone mad. We need to vote for tories so we can get our free speech back. These are the important issues!
What were we talking about?
The tragicomedy part of this mess is that we could have seen this coming from way afar and are still somewhat lucky.
The media always only report on the positives of sanctioning Russia, but purposely leave out the possible negatives for us. Even if that's the right thing to do, we always should be given the full picture.
Same has happened with enforcing China to the Paris agreement and achieving net zero in a relatively short timeframe with their challenging starting position. The end result is that even before this Russian war situation China made policies (end of 2021) to go all in on renewables and more importantly for us now at the same time switch from coal power to oil/gas/whatever less poluting fossil fuel to bridge the transition gap to meet al the goals...
It's super predictable we would have a major player competing for oil/gas on the world market, so prices would increase massively in the next 15-20 years. Even predating the plans of a possible Russian gas pipeline to China which sounds very much a forced error now.
And the lucky part? We are lucky the yanks had Trump for 4 years who sh@t on Paris and anything renewable. Letting his buddies pump up the black gold and his voters to enjoy their low gas prices at the pump until they choke on the fumes.
If they vote in a president who goes all in on renewables we are going to see another big price spike so buckle up...
Scary times and for me, this is when big business has to step in and help consumers - social responsibility is critical.
BUT
You should consider that the supply side of these energy companies, like British Gas, aren’t seeing an increase in profits. Most are quite considerably down on the previous year.
The profit is coming from the part of the business that extracts the oil and gas.
So these companies aren’t using consumer price rises to make lots more money.
Doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be adjusting their businesses to help, but it’s quite an important point in the context of the discussion, I think.

Yeah. Those pesky French used to call industrial action the British disease. I'm sure you're glad Maggie cured it. Maybe if you Brits grew a pair amongst you you wouldn't be paying these exorbitant rates.

That's like saying you're broke when your wage has stayed the same but your husband has made millions at the same time. All goes to the same household. Can't afford to feed the kids cos the wife's wage hasn't increased. Can't transfer some from the husband's account cos that's going towards a new yacht.

There's strong rumours that many are planning on cancelling their direct debits as a protest against it. Let's be clear on this. This has nothing to do with the economy as the companies themselves are pocketing record profits. Fuel companies are exploiting the war in Ukraine to hold us all hostage in the full knowledge that their biggest competitior - Gazprom, a Russian provider, no longer supply the rest of Europe. When the competition disappears you can charge what you want.
It's daylight feckin robbery. We're on the edge of civil war in this country and the government are sleepwalking us into it. This winter will be the breaking point for many and there's only so much you can take before you fight back. Unions will rise (if they're still allowed by then), people will fight and the economy will hit the floor. We're on the verge I think of the most catastrophic point in our history. The Tories, Covid, Brexit and War. The four horsemen of the apocalypse.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Absolutely spot on. Something big is coming down the line. Nurses are now ballotting to go strike.
It is just not sustainable for the Tories to just ignore or the problems mounting up, without there being some kind of uprising by the populice.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I would settle for the country voting Labour at the next general election to be honest. I'm not even a fan of Starmer but I desperately want to see a change from the Tories.
We have to have a change from the tories. 12 years of them and what an awful state we are in
Doesn’t matter who you normally vote for, if you don’t think this country desperately needs change, you need to give your head a wobble
The rest of the world has the same problems if you just bothered having a look
I think for the next general election we should not take a dumbed down, simplified approach. We should focus on actual policies and how to solve complex issues HEY LOOK OVER THERE AN IMMIGRANT
In future we need to elect a PM and a deputy PM who will stand in if the standing Prime Minister dies, resigns or gets sacked.
At the moment, the immediate future of the country lies in the hands of someone who will be elected by a bunch of comfortably well-off retirees living in the Home Counties.
