Also, your comment about Robertson and Alexander-Arnold being out of the team and forwards still scoring isn't overly reflective of the importance of the full backs in creating chances for them. Tsimikas has their most assists this season from left back and they have undoubtedly struggled without the dual threat of both full backs providing those balls behind the line.

My opinion is, and has been for over two years, that we won’t score enough goals until we bring in new strikers. I haven’t seen any prospects of me being wrong about that, even though I would love it not to be the case.

For a long time last year you argued that obviously we would score more if we moved to having 4 at the back because we would have more in attack. Then you argued we needed to bring in attacking and creative midfielders. Both those things have happened and we aren’t scoring more. Now you talk about us playing more direct. Let’s see.

I would love to be proved wrong and that we would score the best part of 60 goals this season by changing formations or tactics. But I can’t see us scoring much more than the 38 we got last season with our current forwards no matter what else we change

Where have I said we will score more than 60 goals?

I also didn't think moving to a back 4 alone would see us score more. We still needed to create overloads and move the ball quicker. A back 4 would just help us hold a higher line and control the game higher up the pitch through being able to press. We don't press well either though because we have been poorly coached, so at the moment it makes little difference.

You keep saying a new striker is all we need but in the time you have been saying that we have tried Fabio Silva, Willian Jose, Raul Jimenez, Patrick Cutrone, Diego Costa etc and have still struggled for goals. How many more do you want to try until we start looking at how we're are actually approaching games?

For me the issue is way more nuanced than you would like to admit. It isn't just a case of switch this player out for a new one and we will score goals. If it was, we wouldnt need coaches or managers. The problems are deeper rooted and until we address that we are destined to be one of the most boring teams in the league.

I agree with that too. It was always my complaint with Lage that he seemed to see some mythical striker as the only possible answer to us getting any more goals at all and he looked like he thought the lack of goals was therefore absolutely nothing to do with him until that striker was in place.

I do think Spangles is right that our group is not filled with natural goalscorers but if we don't score Sunday then we'll have had three chancellors in a period in which we've scored one goal - and I would argue that it just simply shouldn't be THAT bad. I don't believe that a decent coach couldn't do two things 1. Coax a little more goalscoring ability out of our forwards (imagine if no player could ever improve any area of their game) and 2. Arrange us tactically so that our odds of being in goalscoring positions increases.

Sorry to be too nuanced for you. 60 isn’t an accusation I was making at you, it’s the kind of level that we need to get to in order to get back to finishing in the top 7.

Where have I said we need a striker? I have always said we need strikers, plural. If we are playing three up front we need three who can score double figures a season. We haven’t got one.

We have a good keeper and good defenders so we have a good defensive record. We have good midfielders that Lage didn’t get the best out of. And if you forget that goals are important we have good forwards too.

Playing higher up the pitch, pressing the opposition, gaining an identity, none of those things will lead to many more goals unless you have forwards with more goalscoring capabilities.

That's not true. You are most likely to score a goal in the aftermath of winning possession in the oppositions half. That's why the best teams press high and look to win the ball back high up the pitch. Pressing well will always lead to more goals as it creates chances.

An identity will give us more goals. When Nuno first brought us into the Premier League we had an identity. Hold the shape and then press when the ball when it was in a wide area, before attacking in a direct manner, with pace on the counter. The last 2 and a bit years we have played with no real identity in a one pace manner with little pressing. Guess which period saw the most goals?

Once again you are talking as if all hope is lost on us scoring any goals unless we buy new players. It's complete nonsense. This team should be capable of scoring more goals than it currently does.

Just for the record, since the Fosun/Mendes takeover, we've seen over 20 players from Portugal introduced at Molineux, 18 were from Mendes. Plus two managers of course.

We have also seen our four best finishes since 1979-80

The time when we scored the most goals in the new era was before Jimenez had his injury when he was twice the player he is now. And when we had Jota who is much more of a goal threat than any of the other forwards we have now.

You seem to be saying that the style and tactics are more important than the quality of players. Its complete nonsense. For two years we have needed to find players with the goalscoring threat of Jota and the old Jimenez for our forward line, and we have failed miserably to do so.

We can go back to playing the way Nuno used to play, we can adopt the same approach as Klopp at Liverpool, but to do that when there is a chasm of difference in the quality of goalscoring players available is simply not sensible. Thats why we have to set up to make sure we don't concede many, because as the recent record books show, if the opposition score one, we almost certainly won't win.

I'm not saying the quality of player is less important than the style and tactics. I'm saying they are equally important and that our players should be capable of scoring more than they do.

You are basically saying we should give up until January and then hope we can sign a 20 goal a season player. That no matter who we have as coach, it is completely hopeless. May as well just leave Steve Davis in charge forever.

Or have left Bruno Lage in charge. Obviously it wasn't his fault we only scored 3 goals in 9 games.

Without Jota, Diaz and Nunez, Liverpool didn’t have their usual quantity or quality of strikers today and weren’t able to score against Forest who move off the bottom of the table with a 1-0 win

Not interested in the past cinci. It's the present I'm more concerned about.
