A fine day for Norman and why I became a United fan

Leeds v Chelsea 1970 FA Cup final and particularly when Davy Webb was interviewed before the game a stated that he was going to kick the **** out of the Leeds players with his ‘bovver’ boots😂. What’s so funny is that the Leeds side contained such football assassins as Billy Bremner, Norman Hunter, Paul Madeley and of course big Jack Charlton. It was never gonna be anything else than a bloodbath😂.

The first piece of sport I remember watching on TV was the 78 FA Cup final. Still one of the worst games I've watched.
As for other sports. The 1980 Olympics with Whipper Wells and Yifter the shifter.

Used to watch the clay fights in the early hours with my older brother, in b&w of course very grainy pictures, first cup final United v Leicester 1963
Never missed a cup final after that, until recently just another game now, not prestigious like it used to be

I have a vague memory of Alan Wells winning a medal - but it couldn't have been the Olympics as I was too young.
Have memories of random things like seeing Zola Budd run at a local athletics event, Barry Sheen at Brands Hatch, and watching boxing on ITV. Couldn't put a year on any of them, all just blurred into the same era.
Remember bits of the 84 Euros, but it is more the 86 World Cup and the FA Cup Final of the same year that I can say with certainty I watched.

If that game was the first I watched I think it would have also been my last.

Losing to Southampton..
I was a Navigating Officer cadet in the Merchant Navy at the time and joined a ship in Singapore that morning. Watched the game that evening (Singapore time) and was devastated. Fair result though!

The 78 final made that game look like 79 final

Liverpool v Leeds 1965 FA Cup Final was the first live sport I remember seeing. Sadly Leeds lost 2-1. The next sporting event I remember is England v Argentine in the '66 WCF. I think a guy called Antonio Rattin who was sent off. Then the semi and final against Portugal and West Germany. I heard Kenneth Wolstenholme utter the famous "There's some people on the pitch" etc. All of these matches were viewed on a 10" screen and in black and white!!

I’m sure I have a very, very distant memory of the 82 Olympics in Moscow. Nothing tangible, just a feeling. I remember football being on in the house and being totally uninterested - until the 85 FA Cup Final. Whiteside, Kevin Moran - that’s my first ‘real’ sporting memory.

86 was a great final. 90 was good entertainment but not for the right reasons.

I probably remember further back if I really thought about it but the 1985 Cup Final for me. Remember my Dad broke the armchair leaping up when Big Norm scored. I though about that over the weekend funnily enough as there was an episode of Welcome to Wrecham where they eere talking about football memories with their Dads. That's a nice one for me to remember.

A really good Everton side, going for the double. United were underdogs really and down to 10 men. Quality.

50 trust the process.
Yes I am, maybe even older. Pension coming in 2 weeks so I can officially retire disgracefully. Working in a cold/freezing warehouse with an arthritic knee will be history. I have already had to wait the extra year for this so I will enjoy. So, when the gates open between the human and spirit worlds on Halloween I shall enjoy a few spirits. A large bottle of Morgans/Lambs is on the shpping list.
