Alcoholism

Some might call me an alcoholic. I normally stick to one day a week, usually a Friday as I take my son swimming, to football etc on a Saturday and generally do family things most of the rest of the day.

When I'm at home, I would drink up to 15 beers or a bottle of something and several beers, normally wine or whiskey. However when I'm out I lose control of how much I drink and drink ridiculous amounts and wake up the next day not remembering a thing. Then I spend the next week worrying about what may have happened. Causes me a lot of anxiety and I can't sleep. So tend to just drink at home.

I also can't work of I've drank the day before and therefore never drink the day before work.

What classifies being an alcoholic?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
For me it's being disappointed if I can't have one.

So, just me then. Oh well, I'll just have to soldier on.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't think 2 glasses of wine 5 days a week makes you alcoholic mate. At your age you shouldn't worry about it either.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Agreed. Like 52 I drink most days but can go without no problem. Would have half a bottle of wine every night and spirits on top. As she rarely drinks half it is usually more but we don't open one every night. When she'd out or gone to bed early I drink more. Get drunk about once a month. Weekends are no different to weekdays - its just another day to me. Not proud but everyone is different.

Dear oh dear if what you describe what you have and think you suffer from alcohol abuse then you for your age are a very naive fella.

You sir are a social drinker and you actually give a hardened drinker a bad name.

I'm thinking of ditching alcohol altogether and start doing weed instead.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Weed is no where near as good imo.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Really? It's better in every way IMO, but there's a high you get from alcohol which you can't get from weed.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I was chain smoking during lockdown and it did eventually start facking with my head, and my sleep. I actually thought I had a weed addiction but when I decided to stop smoking it was pretty easy to stay off it.

52,
I drink exactly the same amount as you. We are, at worst, drinkers (buveurs), not alcoholics.

I sometimes get that pished when I go out. Not always, but sometimes. But I don't really suffer from anxiety and I don't get hangovers either. I drives my wife mental. She can have a few drinks and feel like crap the next day. I can drink from 12 noon until 2am, sleep until 8am and then get up and cook as all a fry up.

I would imagine there are a lot of alcoholics on the board. Drinking seems a culture with most fans.

I can go weeks, months without a drink, but I still like a pint from time to time, but only in a pub. I never drink at home, not even at Xmas. Never feel the need to. Cuppa for me most of the time.

I shall be at WHL midweek, but will only have a coffee. My brother in law who I shall be with, will of course be drinking for England.

TOOR, sorry to tell you this but I think it’s important for your recovery… partly to acknowledge your problem and partly to help you see just how damaging your behaviour can be when you’ve been drinking.

You probably don’t remember.

It was a few years ago now and you did such a good job of hiding that you’d been drinking.

Okay, I’m just going to say it.

You said “Gerrard is the best player this century, outside Messi and Ronaldo.”

It’s okay buddy, you can get through this. We are with you.

When i was in bands in my 20s, I'd probably be classed as an alcoholic... drinking 5-6 nights a week and blacking out at least a couple of times a week.

Through the winter, when we didn't have many gigs though, I wouldn't drink as much and didn't feel any withdrawal effects, so I guess it depends on your definition of alcoholic.

Now i only drink on weekends and rarely to the point of being drunk.

OP, in all seriousness, look after yourself buddy.

You seem on top of it and as you say, it gets to a point where it’s just managing things.

But talking to someone - an expert - can help, at any age. Might be worth a chat.

There’s plenty of good feelings to grab without alcohol, and sorry if that sounds patronising.

Watching Spurs drives you to drink

It’s no coincidence Levy built the longest bar in Europe in the new ground.

How bad your drinking habit is likely depends on other things. Diet, exercise, family life. If you get angry after like 2 drinks and have a young family then that's a lot more of a problem than someone who drinks 7 pints with their pal and it doesn't massively affect their behaviour. Also the amount of exercise you are doing, healthy diet outside of drinking, healthy social life and how healthy your mental health is. It is all relative. A good thing to do is to earn a drink. Been to the gym? You're allowed to drink. Done 15,000 steps or more, allowed to drink.

Yeah will do. We shall open our gig with Spit Out the Bone by Metallica, if that's OK.

I don't really get hangovers either but I get the anxiety after drinking, mostly if I can't remember going to bed. If I remember going to bed I'm usually fine.

Alcohol tends to exaggerate the person you are. So I'm a happy drunk
Others a fighting drunk
Others a maudlin drunk etc

Yeah I always thought that you should have to pass a drinking test to be allowed to drink. As with most things, it's the bad ones that give it a bad reputation. Driving a car is dangerous depending on who is driving. The same applies with drinking

If you've genuinely reached the age of 77 and are an alcoholic then i don't think you've got anything to worry about. Just crack on. No alcoholic makes it to that age
