I’m not. You are comparing something so different that is not consumed and that is irrelevant. A better comparison would be cannabis to alcohol.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It is not irrelevant at all. You just can't handle the fact that religion, like alcohol, has pluses and minuses. And many people think that the world would be a better place without religion. Just as many people think that the world would be a better place without alcohol.
There are also many studies that highlight the similarities between addiction to substances and religion. Many people that are addicted to substances replace their addictions with and addiction to religion.
Personally, I think that parents teaching their kids to be religious are imposing an addiction on them.

Wait a moment - what’s this got to do with religion? 😂 we are debating a drug. A drug that causes endless damage to society and healthcare. The cost is in billions. Yet you are bringing up religion? You are comparing a drug to a belief system unless your religion is alcohol?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well alcohol does exist so makes more sense to worship that than a sky fairy.
You refer to just alcohol and not the real problem, the misuse/abuse of alcohol (minority of people). So we shall continue to refer to religious extremism as just religion.
Do you know the cost to society of blowing up buildings, shooting up schools, mass genocides? DO YOU?
Honestly don't know how selfish you are being religious. Unless of course you support genocide?? You caused it so we shouldn't have to pay for it.

Just once a week these days and that's usually on Friday or Saturday nights when I'm out with friends.
I'm more of a spirits man than beer
Might go out on the odd Thursday for pints only...but that's a really rare occasion
Don't see any appeal to drinking at home alone tbh...even when I'm watching the footy...rather just have snacks

One in 10 people in a hospital bed in the UK are alcohol-dependent and one in five are doing themselves harm by their drinking, according to research that quantifies for the first time the massive burden to the NHS of Britain’s drinking culture.
Hospitals are struggling to cope with the numbers of people whose heavy drinking habits land them in A&E or mental health units, but while the NHS estimates that the cost of treatment runs to £3.5bn a year, the figures for the numbers of patients affected have been largely anecdotal.
https://amp.theguardian.com/society/2019/jul/04/staggering-cost-nhs-alcohol-abuse-report
I wonder how many people are missing out on treatment due to this group?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's intentionally misleading. Saying "One in 10 people in a hospital bed in the UK are alcohol-dependent" does NOT mean that 1 in 10 beds are occupied DUE TO alcohol dependency.
If at least 1 in 4 people in the UK are obese, and we know for a fact that they're more susceptible to requiring hospitalisation than those considered to have a healthy body weight, then it's easy to extrapolate and say that at least 1 in 4 in a hospital bed in the UK are obese and one in (two? three?) are doing themselves harm by over-eating.
(As an aside, the main focus of the article is how cuts have caused a severe underfunding of dedicated alcohol treatment services, resulting in more people landing in a hospital bed - a situation that's aggravated by the insufficient training of NHS staff to deal with these problems. No surprise that these services are underfunded when a broad section of society keeps voting for diminishing government involvement in health provision and social care.)
