How would early societies and civilisations have developed without religion? That's the point.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Harari makes this case very well in Sapiens.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Exactly. Religion the great unifier.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Exactly if people don't agree go into their towns, burn it down and rape their women. At least that's what it says in the bible.

The kind of organisation and teamwork required to invade a town, burn it down and rape all the women used to only be possible through religion.

Without religion people would still have been killing and raping in the wilderness. At least with religion the killing and raping takes place in cities and towns.

That's the usual tactic. If you start claiming to be someone else, then no one believes that it's actually you

They did it for their God. What else could have motivated people in those days. Land was free, you don't need money, etc.

Religion is a stroke of genius. By making ancient people believe that there was an omnipresent and omnipotent entity watching their every move, who sees all and punishes evil and rewards good, ensured just enough law and order to avoid complete breakdown of early societies and allowed society to develop into what we have today.

Whoever introduced religion must have been some sort of early super duper genius who realised humanity would achieve nothing without law and order, so he invented the first ever form of law and order, religion.

The ability to calculate how religion would work thousands of years into the future is amazing. Arguably the greatest single invention of all time.

That's only one of its more evolved strains though. It's only actually a minority of religion that believe in a single entity.

Most religions evolved more naturally an organically out of animist beliefs, and most modern religious rites are the product of a long string of rites that were gradually superimposed, renaming and rejigging them, on ancient pagan festivities around the solstices, the harvests, etc.

The atheist one

posted on 24/10/22

The term religion includes animist beliefs, single entities as well as multiple deity societies. As far as law and order goes, it doesn't make much of a difference so long as you there's good and evil.

posted on 24/10/22

Who decides what is good and evil? My brother got chucked out of church when we were young for wearing an Iron Maiden hoody. Yet there were many adults in there who were there because they were wanting forgiveness for being bad people. Conveniently god doesn't exist so they just forgive themselves and continue to be bad people. Wearing an Iron Maiden hoody or beating your wife? Hmmm

Imagine having a beer and then having to go to a building to try and telepathically tell someone that doesn't exist that you're sorry. Instead of enjoying the beer and not being a weirdo.

See this is the issue. It is perfectly acceptable to mock those who choose to drink, calling them selfish and calling on it to be banned. But when it comes to mocking religion, it is not acceptable. Can you give an explanation as to why one is OK and one is not?

posted on 24/10/22

Noting that religion was only brought up because someone with strict relgious beliefs came on talking about the dangers to society of alcohol and calling on it to be banned.

The first isn't acceptable, hence the stick UWW gets. But you are clever enough to know why it's poor to insult someone's faith, indeed the reason is in the word

Indeed. We aren't allowed to mock something that doesn't even exist but we can be mocked for something that doest exist. Doesn't make any sense to me.

I would never normally call someone out on their relgious beliefs, but I wanted to highlight the sheer hypocrisy. Which is important to do. The view on religion is only going in one direction in coming years and it is important to be able to question it. I don't care if historically it has not been accepted. If it started now, then we would all be questioning it. Progress is key and not dwelling on times when we lacked information and education.
