Salah was offside when the ball was played. If he wasn't he'd not have got the ball from the passback. The law is the problem.

I don’t think you’re understanding the conversation. Everybody agree that the goal was rightly allowed and Salah wasn’t offside because of the offside rule but they are discussing the merits of the rule.

I don't even understand why the opposition playing the ball means you become onside would even be an issue. At all. Of course you become onside.

Of course? You can't just say that. You need to justify it.

The argument against that is you put defenders in a position where they have to somehow work out whether they should go for a defensive action or not based on a potential offside (which is often borderline impossible). The attacker then benefits from being offside. The offside status of a player is decided when their team mate touches the ball and I don't think it is justified to change that status because a defender tried to stop the ball.
