The oil industry spends billions every year to suppress the development of other forms of energy. We can spend 34 billion on track and trace app when that amount can fill a whole desert with solar panels.
Its very doable IMO and I reckon we could do it if the will was there.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That gives you electric at your socket. But it won't power boats.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
How
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Are you serious? Why can't you plug a boat at a dock?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes I'm serious. How many batteries would container ships need. How long could trawlers stay out fishing.?
What materials are needed for a battery.?
What is it's life span.?
Can ferries be battery powered.?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And this is exactly the kind of technology that is either suppressed or not pushed as hard as it should be considering the stakes. All energy research is snail's pace.
Container ship - Take out the massive engine and put in a massive battery?

Call me a selfish barstard if you like, but I’m more irritated about these Stop Oil wanchors delaying my journey than I am about global warming. I do my bit - put the recycling bin out and I’ve got a hybrid car, but at 42 I’ve got a absolute maximum of 50 years left so if the planet can just keep ticking over that long then that’s fine, after that it’s not my problem.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
At least you're honest about it. Might still see some very serious effects even over 50 years though
Have any of the various protest groups who complain about nuclear power and fossil fuels have a financially viable alternative?
Tidal power turbines - good where there is a sufficient regular tidal range.
Wind turbines - good again offshore where the winds are sufficient but unpopular onshore with local residents.
Plant-based oils - which they seem happy with - not sure what the carbon balance is on that when the growing and processing is considered.
Hydro-electric : Great and clean where it can be used.
Solar power : As above
So what is their plan to avoid taking us back to the Stoneage?

They can fly, but so far 124 miles maximum, with one person. I got it just now from wiki, so it could be miles out of date. But 400 people New York-London seems a long way off.
And again, are there any problems making all these batteries, and do they have a n end of life.
Is there enough power to charge them all?
1. Almost all the UK offshore wind licenses are so far out they cannot be seen from shore.
2. They will eventually be generating hydrogen and never need braked as they are today when there is too much wind for the grid balance. That hydrogen will be stored and can be piped down the existing gas infrastructure and the tweak for boilers is no worse than that for the change us boomers went through from coal gas. That hydrogen can also power container ships and cars that you can buy today and what not. The tech exists. It needs to be made more efficient and the infrastructure changes are still enormous.
3. Fission is thought to be about 30-40 years away? That could still become twice that as the science develops the way to harness it but it should happen - we are on track.

You're just thinking of current car technology though. Hydrogen fuel cells creating electricity could work instead.
And yes, we recycle batteries.
Though in the short term biofuels could be a relatively quick and easy transition from fossil fuel in many applications
Mass production of electric batteries is an issue, not only does it take a lot of resources to extract lithium to make them, it's expensive and hard to dispose of them causing just as much pollution.
And there are ethical issues with extraction of lithium due to the exploitation of African Congolese children.
But what do the West care?
