Glad to see that we all agree that people should walk and cycle more in order to reduce their impact on the environment. You all said it, without saying it.

I do, I walk and cycle wherever possible, and use the train whenever I go to see my gf instead of driving
Can I have a gold star?
Oh and I recycle and have solar panels, can I have another star?

So, is it agreed that with nuclear fusion, renewable energy, hydrogen cells there is a reasonable chance of doing without oil in the future.
It was posited that the oil companies spend a fortune to stop research, yet I have jusr read that billions are being spent to try and get a fusion reactor up and running by 2030.
It's an optimistic outlook.
The only thing I'm not as happy about is the manufacture and disposal of millions of batteries.
Someone has said they are recyclable, 100%?

As long as all cyclists are forced to wear natural materials like wool and not the hydrocarbon intensive lycra and equivalents.
Of course, 92.3% of cyclists want to be assumed to be serious cyclists and not your recreational cyclist and are likely to resist not being allowed to dress like Mr Pogacar lest they are not taken seriously. They also would not be happy using designated cycle lanes that are wholly appropriate for your recreational cyclist that only has 25 gears or heaven forbid straight handlebars. No, they would much rather use the road like serious cyclists and slow down motorists so they spew more emissions. Oh, and most important resist battery assistance so they can demonstrate their alpha male testosterone fuelled @rse wobble up 15% inclines because serious road cyclists don't have battery assistance.
Etc.
I think we have to do away with bikes in all honesty. The heavy machinery needed to make the frames is just too energy-intensive. It’s walking only, for those who can’t afford a horse.

Not sure I think they contain recyclable metals but as ever the problem is collection & selection in sufficient volume to make it efficient. Last time I took some to the supermarket the old power tool item wouldn't fit in it. Do I drive all the way to the municipal waste depot just for that? I left it on top and hoped for the best.

There's loads of great research going on atm. Also alternative types of energy storage that are more recyclable than lithium based ones, apologies I forget the name.
It's a major problem that many of the most powerful are actively trying to stop the shift though.
Beyond everything discussed here and the headlines of things like COP, humans breeding way too much needs serious thought and to be delicately addressed. Greenhouse gasses are one major problem, 7+ billion humans and everything that comes with that isn't sustainable either

There are already some (very) large electric boats about, including passenger and car ferries, and some freight carriers. Solar technology has also come on to the extent that the Chinese are building several large (primarily) solar powered shipping liners.
There’s also the possibility of using more advanced modular fission reactors on freighters, as used by aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines.

Of course one big problem is getting people out of their cars.
I love my car, I go at the time that suits me. I go door to door, I don't stand in the rain. If it's cold I put the heating on, hot the a/c. I listen to the radio, or my own music.

I’ve not owned a car since 2010. This hasn’t just been a decision based on environmental factors; I haven’t really needed one or haven’t quite been able to justify the outlay against how much I’d use it. I do borrow a car and drive a bit. Holidays are the main time when I need one. It’s OK trying to help by not flying, but even if you get the train to somewhere else in the UK, you often find you lose a lot of valuable time faffing about with public transport if you don’t have a car.

Seeing as the transport hierarchy has now changed so that pedestrians and cyclists are top priority and cars bottom priority, I hope you will be happy with a drain ridden, pothole filled, narrow section of the road where you have to dodge in and out of parked bikes whilst cyclists try to shoot you through your driver window as they pass you. Drivers don't pay road tax so shouldn't be on the road.
Like a lot of people I'm a driver for any distance or lifting.

Conscious that liquid can't really infiltrate the cracks between your windows, so may provide a service that heats the diahorrea as it reaches your windows, turning it into gas, so it seeps through the cracks and infects your kids with diseases.
THEN you will understand your current actions that are seen as accepted. Just proposing what you are already doing.

Oh yeah, they will support new technology if they have some sort of ownership or control over it. By the time the oil runs out, or we switch to alternative forms of energy they will have transitioned.

Of course one big problem is getting people out of their cars.
I love my car, I go at the time that suits me. I go door to door, I don't stand in the rain. If it's cold I put the heating on, hot the a/c. I listen to the radio, or my own music.
The seat suits me, I can carry heavy loads. I'll give it up, when I have to. Most people are the same..
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I’ve not owned a car since 2010.

So you are saying that more money needs to be spent on adequate, segregated cycle infrastructure instead of things for cars? I like your point.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm saying that if the country spends hard earned to put it in place then there should be a similar penalty for not using it as there would be should I choose to drive my car down the pavement.
And you should wear hair shirts for largely being poncy vvanks anaw.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Seeing as the transport hierarchy has now changed so that pedestrians and cyclists are top priority and cars bottom priority, I hope you will be happy with a drain ridden, pothole filled, narrow section of the road where you have to dodge in and out of parked bikes whilst cyclists try to shoot you through your driver window as they pass you. Drivers don't pay road tax so shouldn't be on the road.

Like a lot of people I'm a driver for any distance or lifting.
A pedestrian for shopping and pleasure.
And a cyclist for pleasure.

If you dare come out of your inadequate provision for cars, then I have every right to kill you. We paid for your stupid car lane that we don't need. Now use it or we will injure you.

Also going to remove the car lane that goes past your house so that I can park my 40 bikes there (equivalent of one car so not unrealistic). Oh you want to drive there? Too bad, I want to park my 40 bikes there pal. Deal with it.

Also when I go past your house on my bike, I will spray a massive can of diahorrea at your house. Oh your house and surrounding area are being polluted by someone going past spewing out diahorrea? WHY ARE THEY ALLOWED TO DO THAT? Too bad. It's the way it is.
Context.

Sounds crazy, I know.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh yeah, they will support new technology if they have some sort of ownership or control over it. By the time the oil runs out, or we switch to alternative forms of energy they will have transitioned.
