You can't just randomly pick players who have done well in between England fixtures.

If you going to take his comments literally then

TAA, Dier, Maguire, Walker, Phillips, Henderson, Gallagher, Grealish, Sterling

would not be picked in this squad.

Even so, the guy has played 54 mins of football this year. Only 14 mins in the EPL/CL.

I know England have taken risks on players returning from injury before but they're usual the big players like Beckham or Rooney, not a Kalvin Phillips type.

I’d only say Gallagher is fortunate. The other three are key members of the squad.

more due to lack of playing time (philips has 53 minutes under his belt this season) than anything, though i imagine rice and philips is still his first choice pairing (quite rightly too, we seem to be much more open and easy to play against with bellingham in there).

and henderson has declined so much that even liverpool fans have stopped saying he's the best midfielder in england.

Phillips has been an important player for us, though. Apparently he’s been training the whole time non contact as well as he had a shoulder injury, so it’s not like he’s been out with a broken foot.

You say it's a balancing act but where is the balance? Because as far as I can tell the only player to miss out based on form is Sancho. Everyone else is picked irrespective. Doesn't feel very balanced to me.
