Safegate will crap his pants and revert back to 5-3-2.

Tonight was poor - very poor, for a lot of it - but tournaments are like this. You have to go back to 2002, I think, for the last time a winning team got 9 points in the group stage. Last summer, we scored just two goals in the group and were second best to Scotland in a 0-0 draw. We were never going to sail through the group.

I doubt we’ll go with 3/5 at the back against Wales. It will be a similar team and, I think, a better performance. It will have to be, as Wales will be well up for it.

I can live with the result, it’s the performance that faaacks me off. All the inventiveness, creativity and freedom we saw against Iran was non existent tonight.

Worse still, it’s not like Southgate made us more compact and difficult to score against, we were wide open at the back and we’re saved by the US utter incompetence up front

Pulisic was made to look like a top class player (he is a great talent but haven’t seen much of this at Chelsea). Yet our best guys were poor. Southgate needs to do a lot better.

Trippier is great in games we are dominating as he doesn’t have to be very good defensively - just like TAA. Walker would have been a better fit tonight, he would have made life much harder for Pulisic but offered less going forwards.

France have the same issue with Pavard who is absolute poverty when it comes to defending

posted on 25/11/22

Trippier was decent for the first 10-15 minutes and it looked like we might get a goal from him and Saka combining down the right. USA’s ascendancy coincided with Trippier going off the boil.

Again, Trippier is great going forwards, which left space for Pulisic to exploit. The US left back Robinson was very good tonight and grew into that game well.

Trippier should have been off at HT and we could have got a foot hold in the game

Does it matter how 'well' England qualify out of a World Cup group. Just as long as they do qualify is all that matters.

posted on 25/11/22

Talking of Trippier, does anyone remember why we got rid of him?
Was it not because he's as slow as a snail at running back into position?

Finishing first matters, that would most likely mean playing Senegal or Ecuador in the round of 16 rather than the Netherlands.

Plus finishing second behind an Iran team we walloped 6-2 would be peak England.

Realistically Wales aren’t beating us by 4 goals, so Southgate should go for it, if we go for it and lose 4-3 then so be it - we would still be through. However I fully expect a turgid 0-0

We had Walker and Trippier Ted, Walker was always superior. Makes me laugh to think we now have Royal and Doherty

I remember all the ones we didn’t win

I remember 2002 where if we had won the group we would have had a cake walk to the final instead of a terrible Germany team that lost 2-0 in the final with their keeper getting man of the match. Instead we can second and lost to Brazil in the semis.

2010 - finishing first would have meant playing Ghana, we came second and played Germany

England nearly always get through the group stages, we just have a bad habit of finishing second when first is firmly in our grasp and end up getting a more difficult route.

I was surprised at Bellinghams positioning when the defence had the ball, he never made himself an option and looked to sit closer to Kane than anything. I don’t know if that was tactical or an individual issue with him as I don’t watch much Dortmund. He was very poor tonight which was one of the main differences from our game vs Iran where he was MotM.

Made such a difference when Henderson came on the pitch.

Yeah he was pressed very well today. USA put in one of their best performances in a long time, we shouldn’t take that away from them.

There hasn’t been a single World Cup since the group stages went to 4 teams where both finalists had 100% group records so it’s not the end of the world as we are virtually through anyway, it’s the performance that frustrates.

Agreed, it terrifies me to think what he said at Half time - “well done lads, stay patient, they will score soon”

Why the fack did they have acres of room on the edge of our box all game. Fortunately for us they can’t shoot as well as Maf writes English.

this is all just yesterday.

England have underachieved for may decades in World Cups since 1966 (sometimes not even qualifying which is unheard of for the kind of teams we like to associate ourselves with) or in groups drawn with countries some people think we should naturally trounce. It dont work like that. lets just get thro this group, second or first l do and see what happens then.

This would be a fantastic point if it held up to scrutiny, but it doesn’t, let’s look at the stats:

17 world cups with group stages
England have qualified for 14 of these
England have gone through the group stage in 11 of these

So we get through the group 79% of the time - a record that few sides can match let alone beat. Germany, Brazil and Argentina are it.

posted on 26/11/22

Out of the 11 times we’ve got through the group we have finished second on 7 occasions won the group 4 times.

Winning the group:

1954 - made the Quarters
1966 - we won it
1990 - Semi finals
2006 - Quarters

Second place:

1962 - Quarters
1970 - Quarters
1986 - Quarters
1998 - Rd 16
2002 - Quarters
2010 - Rd 16
2018 - Semi

We have an absolutely foul habit of making our path to the final as difficult as possible.

If we finish second behind Iran it will be peak England.

Wasn’t really to do with Bellinghams positioning to be fair, it was more where the US were choosing to block.

What was an issue was Saka and Sterling’s positioning, I’d argue we looked slightly better due to switching them with Rashford and Grealish, they were much more available for the pass from both the defence and the midfield.
