I wouldn't threat it too much. It was a hopeless effort and baffling though, you guys built up some nice confidence against Iran after a crap year and then go and do this next game to sew the seeds of doubt again.
In your favour you guys clearly carry a threat going forward when you have to so you are always going to be in a game, even against the best.
I got all kinds of grief for posting this the other day for some reason but I had England as fourth best and that hasn't changed after today. Bigger eye opener today for me tournament wise would be how mediocre the Dutch looked. I think tomorrow we could well see Argentina slay Mexico and bounce right back into contention as well and do think the Saudi defeat was a bit of a farce with one of those offside decisions a bit of a joke.

Out of the 11 times we’ve got through the group we have finished second on 7 occasions won the group 4 times.
Winning the group:
1954 - made the Quarters
1966 - we won it
1990 - Semi finals
2006 - Quarters
Second place:
1962 - Quarters
1970 - Quarters
1986 - Quarters
1998 - Rd 16
2002 - Quarters
2010 - Rd 16
2018 - Semi
We have an absolutely foul habit of making our path to the final as difficult as possible.
If we finish second behind Iran it will be peak England.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
what is the route if you finish second? Harder than finishing first or not really?
England could be a top team with a good manager.
England are bog standard average, and have zero chance of winning this world cup. This despite this bring a very sub standard Tournanent. Lots of 0-0s show a real lack of top class strikers. The amount of past it geriatrics playing for the so called better sides at this tournament is astonishing. Messi, Ronaldo, Di Maria, Muller, Toby, Verts etc. Throw in Bale and Ramsey for Wales, both long past it. Is there no young up and coming talent?
If England's best CBs are Stones and Maguire and their best full backs are Shaw and Trippier, then you can see why Englsnd have no chance.
I always thought that the USA would be the toughest game in the group. Wales have to come at England and may leave themselves exposed. Their main keeper Hennessey wont play as he was sent off v Iran.
More likely 4-0 to England.

Foden hasn`t started, and Bellingham and Saka were awful last night. Problem is far too many youngsters get hyped up. I await to see if there really are any stand out yongsters in the later stages. Mbappe has already proved himself in a previous world cup, but he is a bit of a lone figure as it stands.
That said I am not watching that much, just glancing at games, so maybe there is a lot of young talent I am missing. But all the 0-0s makes me think I haven`t.
The setup yesterday was amateurish. Any top coach goes out to beat the USA and then rotate against wales.
The whole mentality was abysmal.

Pulisic was made to look like a top class player (he is a great talent but haven’t seen much of this at Chelsea). Yet our best guys were poor. Southgate needs to do a lot better.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Trippier should be dropped, you can’t have two consecutive poor games and keep picking him.
Preferably Walker if fit, but Trent offers more on the ball if both are going to be crap at the back.

The Brazilian lads looked the part and despite losing I was impressed with the 2 German boys also. Gavi for Spain has made the biggest impression so far, what a talent he is.
As poor as England were yesterday, Bellingham and Sak were superb in that first game
Saka was not ‘awful’ last night. He went off the boil second half, yes, but he was one of our better players in the first half.

He has one good bit of play with the 1-2 and cut back to kane.
Did nothing else of note all game?
One more thing than sterling mind you.
The whole front 4 were bad yesterday, there isn’t really any argument for them playing well. Lack of movement, second to everything, lack of creativity.

Needs to work on his delivery, he was found in the box with space a few times last night and only found an England player once. That poor final ball really stood out to me as I had been in awe of Vinicius the previous night who plays the same position

I was surprised at Bellinghams positioning when the defence had the ball, he never made himself an option and looked to sit closer to Kane than anything. I don’t know if that was tactical or an individual issue with him as I don’t watch much Dortmund. He was very poor tonight which was one of the main differences from our game vs Iran where he was MotM.
Made such a difference when Henderson came on the pitch.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah he was pressed very well today. USA put in one of their best performances in a long time, we shouldn’t take that away from them.
There hasn’t been a single World Cup since the group stages went to 4 teams where both finalists had 100% group records so it’s not the end of the world as we are virtually through anyway, it’s the performance that frustrates.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
How are we virtually through?! Wales would absolutely fvck that team up if they play like they did tonight. Absolutely fvcking embarrassment.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Wales lost 2-0 to Iran today, a side we beat 6-2 a couple of days ago.
We are virtually through because Wales have to beat us by 4 goals for us to be out or score at least 5 against us - fancy a bet on that?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Is it not head to head?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Thankfully no, otherwise we would be right in the schitt. It’s GD, GS and then H2H.

I hadn’t realised it was Goal difference until I looked it up after the match - it then made his reluctance to change things obvious to me. The point against Scotland in the Euros rather than going for the win meant we were through, and that point last night essentially qualifies us.
With us basically being through, he has absolutely no excuses about taking the game to Wales and trying to win and secure top spot

My context with that comment is essentially making life difficult for yourself. Playing Holland in the last 16 rather than Ecuador/Senegal.
Like in 2010, top the group and you play Ghana, come second and you play Germany - our 2010 group was Algeria, USA, Slovenia - we came second and we’re gubbed by the Germans in the round of 16.
They've just been saying on the radio that Kane has played all but 14 minutes in the PL this season and is looking tired. I personally would have rested him against Iran for that reason. Probably worth considering it against Wales, given that we'd need to lose pretty heavily to go out.

This example is true, but most would say that we've been good at, or lucky with, making things easy for ourselves in recent tournaments. We've had a fairly nice route to the semi or final in the last two and we even engineered a group-stage defeat to Belgium in 2018 to avoid Brazil in the quarters

Absolutely and resting a few won’t hurt either, something like. England are good enough to rotate for that match and still win it if we set up properly something like:
Pickford
TAA Maguire Stones Shaw
Henderson Rice
Maddison
Foden Grealish
Rashford/Wilson
Then Gareth you have 5 subs remember, you could bring Kane/Saka/Sterling/Mount on to run at tired welsh legs

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Weirdly Sandy we also have some of the best young talent along with Brazil, Spain, France and Germany
England:
Foden
Saka
Bellingham
Brazil
Rodrygo
Vinicius
Martinelli
France
Mbappe
Tchouameni
Camavinga
Spain
Gavi
Pedri
Germany
Moukoko
Musiala
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Foden hasn`t started, and Bellingham and Saka were awful last night.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
The only downside to this is we will progress and Shiiitegate might keep his job.

I feel like there’s a place e for Southgate in the England setup, you cannot deny his results at both adult and youth level, the team spirit too.
Perhaps it’s more of a “director of football” type of role, overseeing operations?

I agree, I was getting pizzed off with the commentary saying England had to stay patient like Brazil did the previous night - what faaaacking games are they watching. We were on the ropes against the USA in the first half.
Then at half time - what did he tell them!! Because they were just as schitt second half until the subs which as per usual were too late in the day.
What last night showed me is that Safegate hasn’t learnt his lesson yet and he will still hold back rather than go for it in a knockout game.
I reckon he was secretly happy with that point as he knows we are basically through now

Out of the 11 times we’ve got through the group we have finished second on 7 occasions won the group 4 times.
Winning the group:
1954 - made the Quarters
1966 - we won it
1990 - Semi finals
2006 - Quarters
Second place:
1962 - Quarters
1970 - Quarters
1986 - Quarters
1998 - Rd 16
2002 - Quarters
2010 - Rd 16
2018 - Semi
We have an absolutely foul habit of making our path to the final as difficult as possible.
If we finish second behind Iran it will be peak England.

He should certainly rotate next game regardless. There will be players chomping at the bit to get their chance, perhaps one or two can force their way in to the starting lineup.
TAA, Rashford, Foden, Grealish, Wilson should all start imo.
