What are they doing that is so much worse than when people weren't allowed to be with their dying families in hospices, or go to funerals?
Very curious to see how this pans out over there
I was thinking about the protests, there must be no escape considering their use of face recognition tech. So even if you escape arrest during the in-person protests, they'll nab you later.
Can't wait for 燕尾服 to log in and tell us what THEY are up to here.
Looks like Eeyore has been getting in Winnie the Pooh's ear a bit too much.

Covid ffs. I had covid last week, basically two days of feeling a bit hung over, it’s nothing, no worse than AIDS or the common cold, people need to facking get over it, the world needs to accept it and move on. Especially China seeing as they facking started it in the first place.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Everyone around me seems to be getting similar types of respiratory tract infections recently. I think a majority aren't even bothering to test for Covid any more.
They, very stupidly, rolled out their vaccine, which isn’t particularly effective, to the healthy and young first and then by the time they changed to promote it to those more vulnerable, scepticism had grown and they’re not taking it in large enough numbers. The consequence is they have to stay with containment as their main deterrent, which is never going to work and puts all the rest of us at huge risk again too.
They can't stand loss of face thinking its weakness and that's the reason they won't back down now.
Like French wine growers.

Not entirely accurate. The older generation in China has always been sceptical of modern medicine, drugs and chemicals. They also started with young people because it happened automatically because young people were easier to vaccinate quickly and get a high percentage of the population vaccinated in recorded time. They've had efforts to get older people to take the vaccine but are not making much headway.

As I understand it the 70% number only comes from data based on antibody or t-cell counts. How the body reacts to these counts is complex and real world, peer reviewed, large sample data mainly from Brazil who initially used the Chinese ones suggests the actual number is more in the 30-50% range with huge ineffectiveness in the higher age groups. DYOR.

My missus was working in a hospice last week and as I had a cold she asked me to test as a precaution. I felt fine but did it, and was surprised to get the double line. Next two days I felt mildly groggy, no worse than other winter colds or viruses that any of us will have had in times gone by. Then brand new again. It’s a piece of pissss, the Chinese need to pull themselves together. Worst case scenario they could do with a population cull anyway.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Their population are not daft and know it was unlikely that their government were first out with a tested, safe, effective vaccine so the take up was and continues to be low, particularly amongst the vulnerable old and wise.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Those considered most at risk are mostly fully vaccinated anyway, and even if you are around someone vulnerable, are the current Covid strains known to be any worse than whatever annual flu strain is doing the rounds?
If you're around someone vulnerable, maybe just take whatever sensible precautions you might be taking anyway in the event of any other chest infection.

Ace, not sure the common cold kills 200,000 in a couple of years. Yes Covid does now seem to be a bit milder, probalby due to mot being vaccinated. But for some it is still a deadly disease, and has to be taken very seriously. For the elderly it is particularly dangerous.

So it was accurate then…?
There’s a lot of talk about how repeated, even mild infections, can have serious physical repercussions. I’m sure everyone saw the Chinese guy a few weeks back saying how China was right to pursue strict Covid zero policies because in 10 years or so western economies will be absolutely decimated by ill health and disability in the workforce. Not saying that’s the only reason why China are doing what they are.
The only universe in which China's strict lockdown policy makes sense is one where Long Covid is going to have devastating long-term effects on the efficacy of the global workforce. The idea is that the various health impacts get worse with repeat infection, and with the disease endemic, repeat infection becomes inevitable. I've read a few apocalyptic predictions, kind of evidence-based but as far as I could tell not based on a sufficiently large data set to be definitive. If China has drawn these conclusions, then the lockdowns don't look so irrational.
More likely, as others have said, immunity across the population isn't nearly high enough, and the authoritarian reflex has kicked in as the path of least resistance.
