Weghorst

It is short term OP. Nothing there to be convinced about.

Going to have to back the manager on this one, even though he didnt get Gapko or Felix.
------------------
Our interest in Gakpo disappeared the moment we signed Antony.. Felix doesn't play in a position we need.

Weghorst seems to be a sensible loan option, but next to no idea how he will actually do, if we get him. Maybe ETH will get a tune out of him.

ETH does like a tall striker

I'm quite happy with it. A plan B off the bench to mix things up when needed.

Not sure what Felix would have given us we don't already have tbh.

Save the cash till summer and buy a world class ST n CM.

The issue with Felix, to me, is that he is another of those one in five players where he is world class for one game and you don’t know he is on the field in the other four.

This is based on the limited times I have seen him for club and country.

Are you badly restricted with how much you can send just now. Loan deals looked at Arnautovic and now Weghorst?

neither are thought of as being Man Utd quality and look like cheap short term options.

Team is begging for a striker and I expected better quality names to be linked.

what it is clear about is that ETH wants a strong CF that wont necessarily be prolific in goals but aim will be to have the ball stick to them and bring others into play.

He isnt looking for a run the channels and stretch the back line striker

We spent shed loads in summer. There's not an endless tap sadly.

and no doubt we will be linked with every striker going, in the summer. January is just problematic to make such a big signing.

No value in the market.
Jan never a good time to buy top players.
Not sure if it’s a decent move or not but if the owners are gonna sell up soon, they’re never spending £30m or more on a player this month.
If he comes he might get half a dozen goals as a different option to what we’ve got from the bench.
Can’t really lose out too much I guess, unless we have to rely on him as a starter due to injury and he doesn’t do any good

Think there's definitely a financial aspect to it due to FFP. We spend loads in the summer. There's probably a bit of leeway after binning Ronaldo but not a great deal.

Plus the fact if there is a striker or strikers in mind that we want, they wont be available in January.

Exactly Ji. And even more so once the Glazers announced the sale / investment of the club.

Weghorst is apparently an ace presser as well so we could well see more of him than we think. A stat I read about him today is that he has more career goals than any current United player.

He's not the stellar signing that gets the fans excited but he could just be what the team wants/needs. It could also be ETH's way of seeing how a player of his profile would work.

I've also read he's also willing to buy himself out of his contract so that bodes well already (not for Besiktas obviously) for United.

I would put money on him having more of an impact than Elanga.

I don’t think FFP is the issue, it’s more cashflow and the lack of availability for the top strikers.

As I said in another thread, whilst Weghorst himself won't be the long term answer for us, it may give us a strong indication of the profile/type of striker ETH and the club will be looking for come the summer.

If we're going to develop into a team that dominates the ball and forces teams back, that will negate the need for pace in the CF position as there won't be that kind of space to run into. What it will require is someone who can take hold of the ball in tighter areas, link up with team mates, press the opposition out of possession and be a real threat in the box, including aerially. It would explain the interest we had in Arnautovic in the summer, and would offer a different kind of threat to Martial.

I'll state this now as well so I don't claim to be wise after the event!

If he comes in, does well and really improves us as a squad/team I'd hope that we wouldn't be thinking of replacing him in the Summer for a bigger name CF that's wildly different to him.

I've a feeling EtH isn't one to go by name or reputation and I'd hope he'd win any battle if there was one to be with the money men. The fact we're seemingly not after Felix suggests we are more sensible now.

I read he's a pressing monster

Well explained by the athletic below

Awful footballer but could flick on a header in the 90th min which could lead to a goal.

posted on 10/1/23

Time will tell whether it’s a worthwhile signing. But I don’t think judgement of his career as a starter has much value when looking at what he can contribute as a sub and rotation player.

Take Giroud, for example. At Arsenal he was hated because he played in really creative teams but just couldn’t deliver on a regular basis. However, when he joined striker graveyard Chelsea he was extremely valuable as a sub and rotation striker.

Getting strikers that can provide that impact is quite difficult, and it’s often lesser players that provide that role well because they’ll be content with their position in the squad.

It’s why you end up seeing players like Luuk De Jong go to Barca, or Choupo-Moting going to PSG and Bayern.

What must you think of Nunez seeing as Weghorst is more technically gifted.

Yep, this.

Wouldn’t be a sensible way to spend money.
