Huge game tonight

The yellow cards suspension situation changes after tonight doesn't it? The threshold goes to 10 yellows.

I think it's worth the risk leaving Casemiro out for that reason tonight. I know we should worry about Palace before Arsenal but the squad also needs to be managed in terms of fitness and availability. EtH must surely believe we can beat Palace without Casemiro? If he doesn't then it doesn't bode well!

We don’t score enough to be confident of a comfortable win, in my opinion.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So rest our 2 most important defensive players?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Would you rather miss them vs Palace, or Arsenal?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Both results are of equal importance. We need to worry about tonight first.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Agreed.

But if you had the choice to have both players available for either the Palace or Arsenal game, which would you choose?

I think we both know it would be the Arsenal game, and that this is why I suggested we rest them both tonight.

In ETH’s defence, he’s probably watched McTominay play football.

Varane is not a yellow away from suspension. Whatever about Casemiro, you can't be resting players in important games in case they might get injured.

And then we lose to Palace to tonight followed by Arsenal beating us anyway.

3 points tonight is huge, nobody is going to the Emirates and expecting a result at the moment, even us.

Let's hope he does. That'd be great. If I did play McT though I'd have him a bit further forward than what he's played previously. He does have a pretty good shot on him and an eye for goal.

This. Casemiro is experienced and intelligent enough to be careful tonight. If he picks up a yellow so be it.

Saw them against Chelsea the other day and if they play like that then United are in for a very tough evening.

If we can't afford to rest Varane vs Palace then we need far better options at CB.

We could lose against Arsenal even with a full strength team, it’s highly possible. That’s next week though.

We need to guarantee 3 points tonight, taking 6 from 6 into the Arsenal game to finish off a tough week.

Wouldn’t rest anyone unless they were struggling.

posted on 18/1/23

Casemiro looked tired vs City. That and the yellow card tightrope and I'd rest him.

Let’s face it. We should be beating Palace without Varane. However it won’t be easy tonight and he’s our best player so in a must win game we should be playing him.

As a said earlier, we have two games next week where we can rest him.

Expecting full strength, tonight's game is just as important as the one just gone against City or the one ahead against Arsenal

We need to be careful with Varane because of his injury problems, though. He’s not been playing three times a week that often for us.

posted on 18/1/23

Agreed on the above.

We used to be masters of winning the so called easy games, and then our direct rivals at home. Then drawing with direct rivals away would be great results.

So strong team tonight, then play to contain Arsenal and I’d still fancy us on the counter.

I agree but he essentially played 6 games in 3 weeks at the WC. I would have him sit out both games next week if I was ETH but we’ll see what he does I guess.

ETH is not going to play those two together at CB.

I’d go Varane/Martinez tonight, Varane/Shaw on Sunday, Lindelof/Martinez vs Forest and Maguire/Martinez vs Reading.

I doubt it will pan out that way though.

And the fitness coaches will be conscious of that when managing his minutes. If he’s fine to play both games he should. But if there’s a worry that playing today and Sunday could be a problem for his fitness then I’d be fine with him resting this evening.

We need to get Maguire back into some form as well, especially alongside Martinez. As with the amount of games we’ll be playing in the next few months, and Varane’s injury history, he will be needed.

He may not really be needed at all. It seems to be between Martinez and Shaw for LCB now and before the WC Lindelof when Varane was out Lindelof was the RCB. I think his time at United is winding down.

Ten Hag has had a habit of getting different results to last seasons equivalent fixture. Lets hope the trend continues tonight and another win.
