He's an excellent player. You won't notice how good he is after a few games as you have to really watch him to see what he brings. I always wondered why Bayern didn't sign him and then they did. Strange he didn't get much of a chance there.
He should have been sent off today however.

I can see why people think it was a red but it would have been soft imo.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Heaton is. Garnacho won’t have to be registered for another couple of seasons.
Elanga I think maybe will next season.
Point remains: we’re full of non-homegrown players already and short of homegrown ones. It’s going to become an issue if we aren’t careful.
Thought the red was 50/50 tbh, slo motion makes it look worse. We were unlucky with Casemiro imo so it evens itself out.
He looks okay, decent and well rounded midfielder who I’m sure will only get better with time in the side.
Never a red card. The only reason people might say so is because the contact is high. But he's stood upright and the force is minimal. If he's sliding in and makes contact there it's a different story
I don't think we've even seen the best of Sabitzer yet: I'm looking forward to watching him play next to Casemiro, and benefiting from the structure that gives to the midfield in general and the licence it gives him individually.
Whether to buy him in the summer I guess comes down to the mix of profiles ETH wants in the squad. As Rosso says, we're almost certainly going to want a ball carrying deep midfielder (the FDJ role). We want credible back-ups for both that starter and Casemiro. I guess Sabitzer is a better stand-in for both roles than Fred. Would Sabitzer become the new Fred - first choice midfielder from the bench - in that case? Back to the point about finally getting to see the Sabemiro pivot for the first time: how does Sabitzer compare with Fred when it comes to Fred's superpower of pressing / winning the ball high up the pitch? Fred can be limited in various ways but he can become one of the most important players on the pitch when deployed as a kind of 'special teams' player for a specific task in specific circumstances. If we can afford to maintain that weapon in our squad without having to use it all the time, it's a useful thing to have.
Another dimension (bearing in mind Eriksen and Bruno) is whether Sabitzer gets to be first choice if he stays, or whether he ends up being the best midfielder on the bench, which is the situation he was keen to get out of at Bayern.

Just checked and *including Sabitzer and Weghorst* the squad has (the maximum) 17 non-homegrown players.
You’d expect Weghorst and Bailly to go this summer, but Diallo turns 21 next season and would need to be registered too. Elanga will need to be registered for the first time, but will count as homegrown.
Unless there are further non-homegrown outgoings, we’ll be buying (and keeping) British/British-trained in the summer.
I’m guessing he wants to leave Bayern to get more game time but we see him as a squad player too. Makes sense as a Fred replacement as he’s a better player on the ball and for £20m would be good value but again all depends whether he’s happy to be a squad player? There will be a lot more options in the summer too and it sounds like we’ll have a bit of money to spend.

I see Sabitzer as more of a backup to/rotation with Casemiro than a potential partner, and as such, a better like-for-like deputy than Fred.
Fred’s game (on the eye and statistically) is a little more diverse than Sabitzer’s, as you’ve mentioned, and he’s definitely more suited to and used to playing box-to-box. I’d put him above Sabitzer as cover for Eriksen, not least because he’s a better ball-carrier than Sabitzer (something that sticks out like a sore thumb when you look at Sab’s figures at Bayern - he just doesn’t ever do it) and otherwise likes to get up and down. But he just isn’t as good at the parts of the game you need to excel at to stand in for Casemiro. Comparing the two directly, Sabitzer is going to break up more opposition attacks and do more ball-winning for you than Fred.
If Sabitzer impresses and stays, I think we might be looking next season at Casemiro/Sabitzer next to New Signing/Eriksen with McT for cover.
Interesting observations, Rosso. I do wonder whether that's a proposition that Sabitzer would find appealing: back-up to Casemiro means not only leaving Bayern to be a bench player at another club, but also playing in a more 6 role, when for much of his career he has been an 8.
I guess there could also be budgetary pressures working against this scenario. If we're investing in a carrying midfielder for the first XI (which could be Rice or Bellingham) in addition to various other positions, I wonder whether the transfer fee and salary that Sabitzer would command make sense, or whether we go for an up-and-coming alternative (the next Caceido).
By the way, in Garth Crooks' 'Team of the Week' column he devotes one perfunctory sentence to Rashford before digressing to Sabitzer's *horror tackle*:

If he wants to stay I’m not sure he’ll have much of a choice given that a) ETH’s United don’t play - and presumably won’t be playing - with an eight in the side, b) he isn’t a ball carrier or really a B2B midfielder, and c) he isn’t likely to displace Casemiro.
So maybe he won’t want to

Garth Crooks 'hyperbole of the week'.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I only click through these days to chortle at his childlike selection logic and pomposity.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The BBC are normally very respected in terms of journalism. Not why they let clown at it on a weekly basis.

By the way, in Garth Crooks' 'Team of the Week' column he devotes one perfunctory sentence to Rashford before digressing to Sabitzer's *horror tackle*:
"Meanwhile, Premier League referee Stuart Attwell should be relieved of his duties. He allowed Manchester United's Marcel Sabitzer to remain on the pitch after the worst tackle I have seen in years and without so much as a caution."
The worst tackle he's seen in years! Years!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's absolutely ridiculous
Should have been a yellow though.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Was he watching Andy Carroll and Fabinho in recent weeks ?
