Rosso, whether we can offer Sabitzer a sufficiently important role seems like a big question.
As to your point about ETH not deploying an 8, I guess there's another question about the extent to which we opt for constructing the ideal squad vs pragmatism around the resources at our disposal. If the first choice starters are a DM + ball carrier (let's say Casemiro and Frenkie in an ideal world) I suppose the ideal scenario is to have back-ups who fit those two profiles. But actually all the other senior midfielders we have (Eriksen, Fred, McT and Sabitzer) are different kinds of 8s who are variously better/worse at pressing, tackling, passing, but none of them excelling at ball carrying, press resistance or screening space. Given ETH's ingenuity at finding solutions when the ingredients don't suit the original recipe (as well as his widely documented use of different blends of midfielders in his two Ajax iterations), I guess it's unlikely he'll insist on maximising the churn of midfield squad personnel in an already complicated summer window.

I don't think we've even seen the best of Sabitzer yet: I'm looking forward to watching him play next to Casemiro, and benefiting from the structure that gives to the midfield in general and the licence it gives him individually.
-------------------------------------------
Yeah I think it's the role that would most suit him as I don't think he's positionally intelligent enough to shield a defence and receive the ball in deeper positions to a high enough standard.
I think him and Fred are quite similar in terms of being more at home as more advanced midfielders who press aggressively and force high turnovers. Neither are that good when it comes to the first and second phases of play.

Whilst the attack is largely built around Bruno, I don’t think United will be playing with what I’d call an eight (in the mid-career Scholes/Lampard/De Bruyne sense; I know many people refer to all B2B midfielders as eights though.)
I expect it’ll remain a double pivot, with one of the pair given primary responsibility for progressing the ball to the forwards, as Eriksen has been doing.
(Unless ETH decides to drop Bruno deeper and use him in the same kind of way Jorge Jesus did at Sporting; but I don’t see that happening for multiple reasons.)

He's an excellent player. You won't notice how good he is after a few games as you have to really watch him to see what he brings. I always wondered why Bayern didn't sign him and then they did. Strange he didn't get much of a chance there.
He should have been sent off today however.

Well, I for one am shocked that TOOR doesn’t understand the laws of the game.
Yeah I don’t see Sabitzer playing deep or being Casemiro’s back up. From everything I’ve read and the little I’ve seen his role is further forward which was exactly what we loaned him for wasn’t it? I think he’d just be a Fred replacement as he suits EtHs game more and is hopefully more consistent.
Apparently ETH had a chat with Tielemans yesterday. Do they have history or could there be something in it?
It could obviously be nothing.

Looking at Sabitzer’s numbers at Bayern, he just doesn’t offer what even Fred does as backup to Eriksen in terms of progressing the ball or creating chances though.
He was averaging 0.9 key passes/90 mins at Bayern (Fred this season 2.2), 0.0 dribbles (Fred 0.6) and a goal contribution every 313 minutes. Those aren’t the kind of numbers that are going to persuade ETH to have him deputise for Eriksen.
What he is good at is winning the ball up and down the pitch (better than any United midfielder barring Casemiro), keeping it (his dispossession figures are outstanding), and completing his passes.
As TRS has said, he can be useful winning the ball up the pitch, like Fred; but if his Bundesliga record is anything to go by, he isn’t going to do anything much once he’s won it, nor is he going to excel at progressing the ball through the middle third of the pitch.
TRS, in that light (and the conversation I had with Rosso above), I'd be interested in your thoughts on the midfield options we should be going for in the summer.
---------------------------------------------
First and foremost we need a midfielder comfortable at receiving the ball with their back to goal, playing on the half-turn and strong at ball progression in some shape or form. A player to bring some much needed calm when things inevitably become chaotic.
Then we need adequate cover for Casemiro.
Even though he just signed a new contract to 2027, Bennacer would still be very high on my list. There's Lobotka too who I've mentioned a few times.
I'd even consider Boubacar Kamara who I mentioned last summer when he was available on a free. I think he's taken to the Premier League well from what I've seen.
Those are some of what I think are the better options which wouldn't require us to go totally mad outside of the likes of Bellingham and sigh Rice. I don't even think it's worth considering De Jong.
He’s a far better passer than Fred from the little I’ve seen and clearly better in possession, I heard he’s very good at shooting from distance too. In that respect he’s far closer to Eriksen as a back up than Fred is.
Maybe it's fair to say that Sabitzer is a compromise between Fred and Eriksen: better on the ball than the former, better defensively and in pressing than the latter.

Given that we’re maxed out on non-homegrown registrants, which of those (beyond Weghorst and Sabitzer) do you see going out, TRS? We’re going to have to shift at least one or two more if the club wants the freedom to go after non-homegrown targets in multiple positions in the summer.
Martial? Fred? Pellistri? Diallo? (I can’t see both of the latter being retained personally.)

Depends what you want him to do, really.
Eriksen as used by ETH this season I saw as a stop-gap until he got his preferred ball progressing player (if not FDJ, someone of a similar mould). Sabitzer clearly isn’t that kind of player, or even as much of that kind of player as Fred (for all of his issues with his care of the ball, or lack thereof).

Personally, I thought it could have gone either way. There wasn't much force, but the trajectory of the challenge meant it wouldn't require much more to have resulted in a nasty injury.
Signing Kane and Bellingham could sort some of the homegrown issues. There are others that we could sign as well to replace shiiiiiit like McTominay, AWB and Maguire.
