The Fabinho one would be extremely painful but never likely to cause a lasting injury. The Sabitzer one was high up the leg and could have resulted in the player being out for the rest of the season.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What?! The Fabinho one could have caused either Achilles problems or a broken ankle with the way his foot twisted beneath him. It might just be the very last part of the body you'd want studs to connect with - and I'd say there was more force behind it than Sabitzer's waving leg as well.

If you had played professional football, Winston, you'd know: if he's side on, he's meant it. End of.
Personally, I thought it could have gone either way. There wasn't much force, but the trajectory of the challenge meant it wouldn't require much more to have resulted in a nasty injury.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Could he not just have been trying to get a foot on the ball to try and stop the clearance and keep the ball up their end?
I agree it could have caused injury as Faes had his foot planted, and it definitely could have been a red, but I still think it was more of a waved leg than anything deliberate or violent.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't think it matters what you tried to do, just what you did. What he did was catch the player high up the leg, with a straight leg, studs first. To me that's a red card.
Think Nani, when he tried to control the ball in the CL, or Mane when he tried to control the ball but Ederson came charging in face first and Mane caught Ederson's face. Both reds.
Although as I said before, it's a subjective one.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And there it is.
TOOR’s explanation doesn’t actually relate the laws… only what his own view is.
Try reading the actual laws.

Problem is that Shaw’s probably been a more useful back up to Martinez because ETH likes a left footer at cb. So considering that, we could do with signing one. That makes Lindelof redundant because he’s not good enough to back up Varane on the right side. A back up left footer and a guy that can challenge Varane are needed.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I definitely don't see Varane as one of the problem areas of the first XI that urgently need addressing, but I do think there's an opportunity to recruit a back-up RCB who is superior to him in some aspects (press resistance, passing) while providing adequate cover for the defensive aspects of his game.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s gotta be down the list of priorities though, surely?
I don’t think anybody would argue that it’s:
1. Number nine
2. CM partner for Casemiro
Those two absolutely must be addressed, without question.
Then people are probably going to have the following in some kind of order:
3. GK competition/possibly even long term replacement for Dave
4. Backup for Sexxy Bruno
5. RB (upgrading AWB)
6. Left footed CB to deputise for Martinez (upgrading Slabberz)
7. Backup for Casemiro
I’d put upgrading Lindelof to deputise for Varane after that lot, personally, which would mean that realistically, it wouldn’t even be considered.

No way. If we're talking about likelihood of injury, I'd rather be on the receiving end of Sabitzer's than Fabinho's any day of the week.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Really? Not for me.

The lad Fabinho chopped down was out for about 2 weeks
Faes finished the game yesterday

Ok? Not sure how that's relevant. It's about how you endanger an opponent not how long he is out for. You can endanger an opponent and he not be out for anytime and not endanger an opponent but he's out for the season.

To be fair to TOOR, he said 'could have'. What he meant was it could have resulted in the player being out for the rest of the season had Sabitzer had chainsaws attached to his legs.

The problem is that his fitness isn’t reliable. So getting a cb that can cover adequately is necessary, that isn’t Lindelof. I suspect we’ll make a move for Timber again because of his versatility. But we could do with a left footed cb as well. We still need a big clear out of the squad. Too many players at this club have been stealing a living for years.
rosso, we need to make about seven or eight signings in the summer to sort the squad out and replace the jobbers that need firing into the sun.
Someone to back up Varane is more important than a left footed cb, in my opinion, because the drop off between Martinez and Shaw is nowhere near as big as the drop off between Varane and Maguire and Lindelof.

Not gonna happen though, is it, unless there are new owners and they’re as mental as Boehly.
(Like almost everyone else) we usually make four or so signings for the first team squad; five or six at a push, with a prevailing wind and a lot of luck.
(I don’t disagree with you in principle though.)

Any idea when our rearranged game vs Brentford is going to be?
That’s the thing, if we do get bought up by Dubai (which looks very possible) then we are definitely gonna have big bucks to spend in the summer.
Money isn’t the only issue though, replacing 10 players, some first team and some squad players (that if they were bought for the purpose of being squad players their limited game time could mean it takes ages for them to get up to speed) isn’t an easy job for a manager that’s created a good atmosphere in the dressing room.
Also worth considering who from the academy and returning from loan can fill in places in the squad.
It looked like a red to me I'm afraid. He is a bit reckless anyway and needs to calm down. In fairness he's trying to impress. Should we buy him? I don't know at the moment. Casemiro and Erikson are superior, Fred? Not sure
McT yes he's better, but not by far.
And would he block Mainoo progress.
I'll leave it to ETH
Feels to me that serious foul play and violent conduct have been almost re-written.
There needs to be proper force and a real chance of seriously hurting a player for it to be serious foul player.
Sabitzer was in control and caught him high, but there was barely any force in the tackle. Baffling how anyone could read the rule and then conclude it’s a red, imo.
It is subjective, but too many people - like TOOR - base their opinions on their own set of rules rather than the actual laws of the game.
I suspect we’ll make a move for Timber again because of his versatility. But we could do with a left footed cb as well. We still need a big clear out of the squad. Too many players at this club have been stealing a living for years.
---------------------------------------------
I think this could be the case too given his versatility as you've said and his overall potential. He's still at an age where he could be moulded and become incredibly good in two or three positions.
He'd be an interesting option at RB given the number of different ways we could use him during build up.
Yeah and he could be an option as a dm as well. I’m sure it was ETH or LVG that said they think that could end up being his main position when he’s older. He could be the player for us that people thought Fosu-Mensah was.
Rosso / Dazza
I tend to agree with Dazza on the RCB being more important than LCB question, and Timber looks a good shout in terms of potentially upgrading our cover in two of those positions Rosso listed.
As to the challenge of this summer's window, it's going to be a useful test of the rejigged recruitment team. They've had time to get new structures, personnel and coach's wishes lined up, so maybe we can aspire to actually generate some revenue, ship out dead wood, pick up some bargains and accomplish more than in a typical summer.
Will be interesting to see what kind of right back we do sign. I think Antony and Sancho struggle on the right due to the lack of support from the right back. Though I suppose there are other areas that stems from, particularly keeper and midfield.

Tbh I think one thing that’s not really been discussed, and something ioag brought up last week, is the Emir being a control freak and a man-child. If he has the controlling interest, despite pretending the state has nothing to do with the bid, then the sensible squad building that we need may not become a reality.
PSG, for all their domestic dominance, have been poor at assembling a balanced team and squad for a good while.
With United’s status, it could just become a diiiiick measuring competition that would make even Ed Woodward shy.

I honestly don’t think we need to worry about that with ETH at the helm.
