Think his time with us is a bit skewed. No doubting what a player he was but with liverpool he had a good debut season and an excellant last season. The seasons in between he was very average which is why the club thought about replacing him with barry.
Needless to say his last season form with us continued right through the rest of his career.

The thinking wasn't actually to replace him with Barry but Barry was going to play in the same team on the left. Although when Alonso left he likely would have replaced him anyhow.

Yes that's his view and I think there may have been a bit of both, since Alonso had just had a below average season and a disagreement with the manager. He wanted to leave and requested to do so. He would have went to Juventus only their bid was way too low and he wanted to go to Arsenal also but again the clubs couldn't agree a price, so an offer did come and was rejected. The manager himself explained that he wanted Barry to play on the left in the same team as Alonso, so doesn't sound like he wanted Alonso to leave.
"(Alonso) is our player, he has a contract," Benitez said. "Barry can play in three different positions, so I don't think we need to worry about this."
The situation is not a question of money," said Benitez after Liverpool beat Lazio 1-0 in a friendly on Friday.
"He is English and can play three different positions, but I am talking about someone who can play on the left."
We have a good player (Alonso) and we have another good player coming in soon.
"We can improve the squad, so we will try to do that. We will bring in one more player if we can.
"I do not know when but clearly we have problems on the left, Kewell has gone, Aurelio is injured and Leto cannot get a work permit.
606: DEBATE
Your views on this story"Babel is away in the Olympic Games. Maybe he can come back and fill that role, but I know we can improve in this area.
"Who comes in? It could be another left-sided player rather than a central midfielder.
"Maybe he can play in three different positions, that is a positive thing. I am talking about one player, but I won't say the name.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
100% he has always been under rated. Fact no 1 mentions him here is another testament to that.
I feel like people have missed the point of this thread. Modric will go down as one of the greatest players of all time. He’s won a Ballon D’or and everyone marvels at his skill set, both during his time at Spurs and now with Madrid.
I’d like to put forward a couple of players please. Messi and Ronaldo. Wildly underrated.
Don’t think I’ve seen Corluka mentioned ?
He was a very good right back ….him and Lennon linked well in the redknap team
He was slow but great positioning and skill
I don't think Modric was underrated was he? He was seen as a great player. Some of course did come out with assist and goal stats and I think it did take him to go to a different league and style of football to show he was really world class.

Michael Oliver, he's been superb for Liverpool
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes he was great for Liverpool when he failed to send off Pickford in a draw when we lost the league by a point.
https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12184035/virgil-van-dijk-referee-michael-oliver-admits-mistake-over-jordan-pickford-tackle-on-liverpool-defender
There are many Premier League players who have been underrated over the years, and it can be difficult to narrow it down to just a few. Here are a few players who may have been underrated during their time in the Premier League:
N'Golo Kante: Despite winning multiple Premier League titles and being named PFA Player of the Year in the 2016/17 season, Kante is often overlooked when it comes to discussions of the best players in the league. His work rate, tenacity, and ability to break up opposition attacks are crucial to his team's success, and he is widely regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in the world.
Jamie Vardy: Vardy's rise from non-league football to the Premier League was one of the most remarkable stories in recent years, and he has since become a key player for Leicester City. Despite winning the Premier League in the 2015/16 season and finishing as the league's top scorer that same season, Vardy is often not mentioned in discussions of the league's best strikers.
Jan Vertonghen: While he was a mainstay in Tottenham Hotspur's defense for many years, Vertonghen often did not receive the recognition he deserved. He was a key player in Tottenham's run to the Champions League final in the 2018/19 season, and his leadership and defensive abilities were crucial to the team's success.
Riyad Mahrez: Mahrez was a key player in Leicester City's remarkable title-winning season in 2015/16, scoring 17 goals and providing 10 assists. Despite this, he was often overshadowed by his more high-profile teammates and did not receive the same level of recognition as some of his peers.
These are just a few examples of Premier League players who may have been underrated during their time in the league. There are many others who could be added to this list, and opinions on this topic can vary widely depending on who you ask
Mousa Dembele: The Belgian midfielder played for Tottenham Hotspur for six seasons and was known for his strength, dribbling ability, and composure on the ball. Despite being a fan favorite and a key player in Tottenham's midfield, Dembele often did not receive the recognition he deserved from the media or other observers.
Michael Carrick: The former Manchester United midfielder was known for his passing ability and his ability to control the tempo of a game. He won multiple Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy with United, but was often overshadowed by more high-profile teammates such as Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Mark Noble: The West Ham United midfielder has been a stalwart of the club for many years, but often does not receive the recognition he deserves from the wider football community. He is known for his leadership, work rate, and technical ability, and has been a key player in helping West Ham avoid relegation in recent seasons.
James Milner: The versatile midfielder has played for several Premier League clubs, including Leeds United, Manchester City, and Liverpool. Despite his consistency and reliability, Milner is often overlooked when it comes to discussions of the league's best midfielders. He has won multiple Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy, and is known for his work rate, versatility, and professionalism.
Gareth Barry: The former Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Everton midfielder is one of the most experienced players in Premier League history, having made over 600 appearances in the league. Despite this, he was often overlooked when it came to discussions of the league's best midfielders. He was known for his passing ability, work rate, and consistency.
Shane Long: The Irish striker has played for several Premier League clubs, including Reading, West Bromwich Albion, and Southampton. He is known for his pace, work rate, and ability to create chances for his teammates. Despite this, he is often not mentioned in discussions of the league's best strikers.
Ryan Bertrand: The former Chelsea left-back has been a consistent performer for Southampton for many years, but often does not receive the recognition he deserves. He is known for his defensive abilities, as well as his ability to get forward and contribute to his team's attack.
Jonny Evans: The Northern Irish center-back has played for Manchester United, West Bromwich Albion, and Leicester City in the Premier League. He is known for his leadership, defensive abilities, and composure on the ball. Despite being a consistent performer for several seasons, he often flies under the radar in discussions of the league's best defenders

Gotta be Modric, spent 4 seasons in the premier league and I don't really think anyone knew how good he was.

Yes he was great for Liverpool when he failed to send off Pickford in a draw when we lost the league by a point.

Thought they were different seasons, weren't they? The Van Dijk injury was in 2020-21, when Liverpool finished third, way behind City (largely because of the Van Dijk injury)?
