I’d still take the gamble. I think he’d offer a decent middle ground between the qualities that Kane and Osimhen offer. As much as I like Kane, we won’t improve our pressing from the front too much by signing him. Having him and Rashford in the team makes life so much harder for the rest of the team off the ball.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Up until last season Kane was smart and efficient at pressing (but not exceptional at it), decent enough player to play a pressing game but you couldn’t afford two ‘Kanes’ in your team. This season he has been notably worse but there is so much wrong with the team that I don’t think you can conclude anything from it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think it’s something he’s noticeably declined with. Plus it’s also about the intensity that is lacking compared to how he used to play. It’s something we’ll need to consider when signing a striker, especially as it’s a real weakness of Rashford’s.
Obviously the trade off in goals those two can offer is potentially worth it. But we’d need to make up for it quite a lot in other areas. So it’s something to consider this summer.
Toney would be a good signing for us due to having a bit more to his game than Osimhen and offering more off the ball than Kane, in my opinion.

£65m? Bite their hands off for Kane at that price.
I’d imagine Levy wants much nearer to £100m.
I'd be happy with either, but with Kane we'd be bringing somebody in who we know is well suited to the league and will mean we can address more areas with other transfers as he'd likely be at least 40m less expensive.
I'd love to bring Osimhen in, my concern would be that he'd be the only top quality signing we would make, when we need at least 3 through the spine of the pitch.

Is Ivan Toney potentially going to get banned for his gambling charges?
On the age thing, it's hard to predict. There are notable examples of players enjoying extended careers at the top of the sport, but also quite a lot of examples of footballers who played a lot of games at a young age burning out early. With any individual it's going to depend on a mixture of manageable and luck based factors (games played, injuries, looking after yourself, genetics).
Dazza, a bit of a disconnect maybe between suggesting Kane's age isn't an issue and noting that his pressing intensity has declined sharply?

Spurs fan here. Just curious. What is it that makes you think Kane fits an ETH system?
It seems to me that the reason ETH brought in Weghorst was because he pressed high from the front which then allows your midfield and defence to squeeze up higher. I'm not sure who you think Kane is but he is not that player anymore. There was a time under Poch in his early 20s when he chased everything but he's nothing like that these days. he needs legs around him. That's why he compliments Son so well and why he tends to excel for England with the likes of Saka and Sterling beside him.
It sounds biased but I honestly think it would be the wrong move for United. Not in the short term. He'll score a ton of goals but where is the future planning here? Your best players, aside from Rashford are Casemiro, 31, Eriksen, 31 and De Gea 32. I'm just not sure it's financially or physically wise to add another old head to the roster. You'd be building to compete with City but by the time you get close, you'll have to replace all these players again.
Ferguson rarely did that. If he signed a player over 30 generally it would be cover on the bench, like Sheringham, or maybe Owen, who might have been a little younger than 30 at the time but physically he was past it. He rarely built a team around aged players.
Also, there's not a chance we sell for 65m. That's laughable. Levy won't even entertain discussions until you get past the 100m mark and I honestly don't think you'll bite. My guess is that he'll see out his contract and you'll be forced to look elsewhere. Then Kane will be 31-32 and will, in all likelihood find suitors harder to come by. I think he might end up sticking around after all this.
Overall thoughts about Kane vs Osimhen:
Kane is paradoxically the bargain option. Maybe the most expensive bargain of all time, but surely a lot cheaper than Osimhen. In terms of squad building that could be useful, as we need to invest in lots of other positions. Also useful that he counts toward the home-grown quota. The downside is that he'll be another key player that we need to find a successor for around the same time in the not too distant future - and do we see this United squad peaking and challenging for league / CL titles before that?
In terms of respective qualities, Kane is an elite playmaker as well as finisher, while Osimhen is good back to goal but not in the same class when it comes to interplay. I think some people look at his stats and assume he's not that amazing as a striker, which I would dispute. He's an incredible finisher, scoring a lot of goals that look like half chances, with a variety of finishes. He has the technical skill, pace and strength to create goals out of nothing. Great movement in the box and in the channels. Excellent in the air. Intensity in pressing. He's an incredible player. I don't think we can afford him, and I resent whichever club he ends up at.
Regarding his injuries, yes, there have been a number. Think of him more as Robson than a Martial. Very physical and brave, which leads to getting clattered / booted in the eye socket more often than the average player.

Regarding bad fit for United, maybe Kane would look a more coherent signing if we didn't have Bruno as a key player. If we had a midfield three more attuned to retaining possession, without an old-skool number 10 who loves playing hero passes, it would seem like a better fit.
As for the price tag, Levy is notoriously good at extracting huge fees - but isn't that more down to excellent management of the contracts of key personnel giving him leverage? In my opinion he has sold well not because he's 'hard as nails' at the negotiating table and wields some magical force of intransigence. It's due to being in a position of negotiating strength by having high value assets on long term contracts. If the possibility arises of losing Kane on a free unless he sells now, that leverage ebbs away dramatically. I think he gets a big fee only if Kane is genuinely quite open to signing an extension.

I think you're right on the first point. Since we lost Eriksen, we've not had a dedicated number 10 which is how Kane accidentally discovered how good he was at it when he dropped deeper in frustration to pick up the ball. You have ball playing midfielders, not destructors so the plan long term will be to retain possession, therefore any new striker will be required to hold a higher position. That lends itself to Osimhen more than Kane. That said, ETH is less rigid than I thought. He's happy to change based on personnel so I wouldn't rule it out as a signing. I just think the financials will be too much.
That leads me neatly on to you second point. You say that contracts are largely what dictate the positions of power around the negotiating table but there are a few things here that contradict your point. First of all, you have to think about the valuation of the player to the club that owns him. His valuation to us is greater than he would be to you. You might say he's worth no more than £60m based on age and contract length but if he's the only chance we've got of getting back in the Champions League then he's worth twice that amount in revenue if he gets us there. Then you have to consider where we are as a club and what's going on behind the scenes. If, as reported, we are going balls deep on an approach for Nagelsmann, then there's absolutely no doubt in my mind that each and every manager they approach will say exactly the same thing "I want Kane to be in my squad". He's the gold nugget we offer to any incoming manager.
Levy isn't daft. He knows full well that if he holds firm this summer then United will have to go into the market for another striker. If they do that, where does Kane go the following year? I think he's banking on Kane coming to the end of his contract with essentially nowhere to turn at 32 years of age. He'll then sign a new one.
I'm not saying that will happen but I think that's what Levy is hoping for. Honestly, the fact that we don't yet have a manager right now is working against you. Kane is our carrot on the stick. It would be stupid for Levy to sell him now and I don't think he will.

Is there? I think his age is an issue, just not to the extent that people make out. The intensity of his pressing is a separate point to that, particularly when comparing him to other forward options.

I'd see the intensity of his pressing as an age-related issue if it has declined with his age!
