I hear Ukraine is nice this time of year...

Not Syria but it amazes me that Afghanistan used to be a popular travel destination for Hippies in the 60s/70s.

Imagine how they would deal with them now..

There was a Scottish guy doing travel videos of him in Damascus recently, he said Cairo was dodgier.

If you had a burning desire to visit any country involved in civil war then you would deserve any unpleasant things that may happen to you.

The Darwin Awards are around for this kind of behavior.

You can go to most places if you have the will (and the money).

I was interested in visiting Syria and there's quite a few independent companies that will take you once you've made your way to Lebanon. Unfortunately since the earthquake, most tours are understandably suspended.

Well of course you are right VC, but I would not have gone as far as a burning desire, more of a mild itch.
And often it's only in one area. Eg the Turks and Kurds, but Istanbul is safe. Still, I won't be going.

One problem is that there is no airport. Second as it is against Foreign Office advice, you will struggle for insurance.

True, that's why tours originate in Lebanon which is well worth a visit too.

The FO can be a bit OTT with their advice, if you followed what they say to the letter, you wouldn't leave your front door.

My best bud visited a couple of years ago. He is close to visiting every country on earth now, like 30 shy I think of the 193 total. He was in Liberia recently and met General Butt Naked who slaughtered thousands.

Most war torn areas aren't as dangerous as you would expect.

Personally speaking, I have visited some dangerous countries like Tajikistan and El Salvador and been to some pretty sketchy others like Turkmenistan, China, Colombia etc. Glad I got to Kiev 3 years ago between conflicts, such a shame as it was a beautiful city.

Always wanted to see Krak des Chevaliers in Syria but doubt it will ever happen, especially with an American missus.

MU52 I'm surprised you didn't know this but I wouldn't call you ignorant as once you've realised what's going on you held your hands up. The truly ignorant would double down. (plenty of examples of this on this site!)

My cousin visited Syria only last year (maybe it was 2021) and loved it.

It is an indicment to Western GVT and it's media coverage that some people still aren't fully aware of what terrible situations are happening in certain places in the world. Unkless it's Ukraine.

Just stop the facking boats.

I thought you could, in certain areas, anyway my friends didn't say it was impossible but dangerous everywhere.
Your cousin did well.

Until we had friends from there, and met other people from Iran, I had never thought of visiting, but they made it sound so good I'm tempted.
Another thing I was ignorant about, I thought everyone from that region were
mm, light brown; they are from Algeria for example. But our friends, no, if she was without headscarf she could be from Manchester say.
