Wonderful.lad, shame the injuries destroyed him
Shameful that the club kept renewing his contract

Good luck Phil

It's sadly not how he'll be remembered, but he did look pretty good during those first two seasons and was probably one of our better players under Moyes. Just couldn't stay fit after that, though I also remember a few impressive games under José.

Maybe he will retire to Gurn-sey.

Short-sighted move. If we renewed his contract and got him playing regular football, we could recoup a transfer fee for him.

The 2018 FA Cup final should have signalled the end of his United career. The fact he's only departing 5 years later encapsulates the "Woodward years." Shudder

Yeah but it wasn't officially confirmed at that point as far as I'm aware

Met him once, seemed like a really decent bloke and took the time to chat to my nephew.

Shame how it’s worked out for him, and it is possible to still feel bad for someone despite them earning huge amounts. Must affect you mentally to be unable to do the thing you love for this long especially when you’d played through the earlier stages of your career to get the big move to United.

Will never fault someone who clearly gave his all for United whenever he could.

That being said, how he kept getting more contracts is baffling, unless it was just out of good will to aid his recovery, fck knows.

Saw a good video a while back about the nature of his injures and just how much pain he must've been in when he did play. Think it was this but haven't rewatched to confirm:

Definitely hard not to feel bad for him. I reckon he would trade most of the money he's made for another shot at a career.

Feel bad for him, always played has hard as he could, just a shame it didn't work out. Best of luck to him.

Legend, leader, greatest corner take of us generation, Phil Jones
When is the testimonial?

For me he'll be remembered most as the guy who made Alex Ferguson make the most laughable statement in the history of sport.

"He could go on to be Manchester United's greatest ever player"

I've got a feeling Bobby Charlton might have had something to do with that as I'm sure I once heard him compare Jones to Duncan Edwards, or at least his presence and running style. A lot can change when you're 19 I guess. Who knows, had Edwards survived, he might have finished his career as the next Phil Jones. What a thought that is.

How could Edwards have ended up being the next Phil Jones when he was born 56 years before him?

No many players will stick their head in front and the ball whilst laying on the floor just as an opposition player is about to punt it.

It was a joke about unfulfilled potential. The timeline is irrelevant.

I think people forget just how good he was at the age of 19-21. And I don't remember him having many bad games when we could actually get him on the pitch.

We shouldn't have given him the last contract, but I can't dislike the bloke. You knew whenever he was on the pitch that he'd give absolutely everything he had. Sometimes to the detriment of his own body.

No reason to take the number 6 off Martinez. Probably Varane although numbers 3 and 5 will hopefully be free soon too.
