Arrival is one of the best in recent years.
Visually stunning, fantastic soundtrack and a hugely ambitious concept.
Based on a brilliant story as well ('The Story of Your Life' by Ted Chiang).
Star Wars
Terminator 2 (is that sci fi?)

Arrival is a top film.
The first Matrix film was absolutely perfect. It literally blew me away so much I had to go watch it again at the cinema.
Shame about the follow ups. They weren't anywhere near as good though.
Sunshine by Danny Boyle another fabulous Sci-Fi film. Highly recommended if you haven't seen it.
Alien
Aliens
Interstellar
2001
Although not everyone’s cup of tea I quite like The Fourth Kind
I enjoyed 'Life' but it got a bit of criticism from the experts.
For its time (1968), 2001 really did set new boundaries as did Alien and Star wars for their cinematography
For me, as mentioned earlier, Contact from the 1990s and Interstellar and Prometheus in more recent times rank amongst the best
Lynch’s Dune
Blade Runner
Terminator 2
Alien
2001
Those five are close to untouchable.
The first 3 Star Wars
Matrix (just pretend the sequels don't exist!)
Terminator 2
Total Recall
2001 A Space Oddity, by a mile.
(I've never seen a Star Wars film in my life).

The fifth element.
Forbidden planet
Alien
Didn't really like star wars.

Not seeing a lot of love for Contact which is clearly the best.

I also think that not seeing a Star Wars film yet is no 'stranger' than only seeing 2001 ASO just last week.

Id seen it before but only ever properly sat down and watched it when it was on the biggest screen in 35mm. And just left me cold.
It is weird you haven’t seen a Star Wars movie. Avoid plot spoilers for the second one. Just like a blind prostitute you’ll never see it coming.
Quite enjoyed The Andromeda Strain (1971)
I've never seen any star wars movies and not because i don't think they would be good but because the people that obsess about them are total weirdos.
I don't want to fall down that trap.
Not the best but I do have a soft spot for Independence Day. It's so dumb but very entertaining!

OK. But I think its wierder that you hadn't seen 2001 before. Still got 20 years to do better than you in the Star wars stakes. I have probably have seen most of Star Wars on TV clips over the years. I have even been on the the tour in Tunisia... but never sat down to watch any film in its entirety.
Of all the Star Wars movies, Empire stands out.
For pure entertainment, I too liked Independence Day.
More recently, the first Guardians of the Galaxy was good.
And a quick mention for Spaceballs - it's like Airplane meets Star Wars
