Boomers are the problem. In pretty much every aspect of society.
It's as bad in Dublin also.
I've heard stories of properties in London going to sealed bids for rental! They have an open day, loads of people go, then put in their monthly rent price as a sealed bid on the same day, along with references and reasons why they should be chosen. Insanity.
I think they're going to have to tax the hell out of second homes, but no government will be brave enough to tackle this.
Too many people, too few properties, too many taking advantage with BTLs.
Hopefully there is a crash and the market goes someway to correcting itself.

As long as we all cancel Netflix subs we should have the money to buy a house
I work with Council housing in Edinburgh and deal with an area in a large peripheral housing estate that has multiple social issues, drugs, drink, youth disorder etc and when we get a void tenancy I will expect at least 800-1000 bids for it where as even say 0yrs ago I would have got 70-100 max
The homeless team who have to find temp accommodation are really toiling and the private let sector are similar but anyone with a house to let can make a decent wedge by renting it, whats the answer?
No Idea but if anyone knows please post it up, I could be quite the hero with my gaffers
A crash might actually make the system even worse though, sadly. Those with the most wealth will just buy up everything on the market and force the rental prices even higher.
This is late stage capitalism where he rich get richer and the 99% will be left working to rent everything in their lives.
"You will own nothing and you will be happy", as the quote goes.
Don't loads of politicians in the UK (and I'm sure abroad) own properties for rent. As if they're gonna create a tax that means they themselves will have to pay more. Next you're gonna tell me politicians actually have a soul and care about people.
Being able to live in a home (whether you own or rent) that doesn't cost the majority of your earnings should be a basic right.
The world's most liveable cities very often have strong rent controls.
Property market problem: Boomers hoovering up all the properties
Transport problems: Boomers have always driven so they clog up the roads. Young people can't afford cars so have to use even more expensive public transport. Any active travel or PT initiatives that negatively affect boomers' ability to drive get cancelled.
Political problems: Boomers are the largest group. Politics is a numbers game.
Religion problems: Boomers are the last real generation of christians. We still get nonsense rules because of their boomerings.
Climate change problems: "I survived the summer of 1976, it's called weather"
Food problems: Boomers hate vegans
Equality problems: Boomers hate equality
Racism problems: Boomers make it about them and how suppressed they are for being white males. PC gone mad.
Rape and paedophelia problems: Boomers: "They were throwing themselves at them"
All other problems: Boomers

Maybe in mainland Europe but not sure about anywhere else. I have friends in the UK, US, Canada, Australia who all pay obscene amouts for rent.
Too many people having kid after kid and expecting a free / cheap home for life.
Social housing should therefore only be available to someone for a max period of 5 years. That should be enough time for most to get themselves in a position to buy or private rent.
Obviously i wouldn't apply this to those genuinely unable to work (and I'm not talking childcare costs. You have them, you provide for them)

How do you work this out, isn’t it foreign investors who are doing this?
As soon as a modern accommodation block goes up all the speculators from places like Hong Kong get in straight away
"Social housing should therefore only be available to someone for a max period of 5 years. That should be enough time for most to get themselves in a position to buy or private rent."
Not remotely possible in any way, if after the 5yrs they weren't in a position to buy or rent private what do we do with them? where would they go?

A tower block for a max of 2 years. Then, if after 7 years, if you can't provide a home for your kids, they should be removed from you.
This would soon see people questioning if they can afford baby number 3 or 4.
Ideally - and very unlikely but ideally take possession of all empty second homes and use them for social housing as well as higher taxes on airbnbs and investment properties.
I'd also heavily tax people who own 2nd properties.
Spoiler alert, I am fairly certain Trump Form will comment on this thread standing up for landlords

TBF, if they have worked hard and purchased a 2nd property, fair play to them. Lots of families would be homeless if there wasn't a private rental market.

Then the kids should be looked after max 2 months then if they can't find food for themselves then they can starve.
What are your views on abortion RDD?
I don't know what can be done but it's pretty disgusting at how high rent prices are everywhere.
I'm in the Midlands and you're talking £750+ to rent anywhere that's not a sh!thole. When you then factor in all the other costs like electric bills and council tax then you basically need to be on £30k just to survive.
