Garnacho would be classed as homegown in a few years I believe wouldn't he?
Berba - I don't think there'd be a point electing an U21 as a homegrown player as I don't think it makes that much difference to the overall picture.

Great news, hopefully he can resurrect his career at West Ham. Not the worst defender but not good enough for United, maybe not being the most expensive defender in the world will be a weight off his slabhead too?
Lets bring in a young replacement who's willing to be an understudy to Varane but with the potential to take over from him in a year or 2.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This takes a lot more than 30 million
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'd agree with the fundamental point that shipping Maguire isn't going to significantly subsidise investment in other parts of the team if we're replacing him, but I'd question whether signing an eventual successor to Varane will inevitably cost "a lot more" than £30m. The market for CBs doesn't seem that inflated at the moment:
Kim Min Jae (world class defender ready to displace Varane right now) went for €50m (£43m)
Highly rated ball playing centre back Timber was €40m (£34m)
"Next big thing" Disasi €45m (£39m)
Long-term United target Pau Torres was €33m (£28m).
If we identify a player whose contract situation is favourable, it's not out of the question that we make a modest profit replacing Maguire with someone whose profile is a good fit and who has high potential.

By my reckoning that means three players who I'd expect to be involved with the first team squad regularly (Garnacho, Mainoo and Hojlund) won't have to be in the 25 which maybe means the homegrown issue isn't that tight this year. It could be in coming years though so that may well have to be addressed in upcoming transfer windows.
May explain the AWB extension rumours a bit too.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I hadn't considered that Hojlund also qualifies as U21 so won;t need to be registered
So I reckon 12 non-homegrown, 9 homegrown.
Players born before 1 Jan 2023

The rules go:
- You can register a *maximum* of 25 players
- A *maximum* of 17 of them can be non-homegrown
Which means you could register 17 non-homegrown players and one solitary homegrown player if you wanted.
Or you could register 12 non-homegrown players and 13 homegrown players.
Players born before 1 Jan 2023 won't need to be registered this season (includes Hannibal, Diallo, Fernandez, Mengi, Nacho, Mainoo, Shoretire, Forson,,,)

Makes sense, cheers!

Fantastic news
Another of Ole's flops got rid of
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The club had determined to buy him the a year earlier but wouldn't sanction the spend THAT year. So, I think by the time Ole signed it was a given that he'd be getting Maguire the following summer. Remember that Mourinho threw his toys out of the pram when he couldn't get a new CB there and then. We even made a bid.

I need to lay off the crack.
On behalf of the rest of the clubs in the PL we are very very sad about this news.
Can’t believe we signed this bloke for £80m.
Will kind of miss those heart in mouth moments when Slabz tries to dribble away from his own goal

This was always coming from the moment we signed him—he was never suited to an attacking style.
This is the best window ever
Great news. Good luck to him.
Need a replacement now. A youngster to push Varane and Lindelof.

Onana is going to deliver more heartburn than Maguire and Lindelof have ever done combined.
Every club has a scapegoat.
Who will Utd promote to this position? I reckon Mount if things don't go well.
Finally one of the last deadweight + one of the worst bottlejob by the arshole Ed Woodward gone! Woohoo
Good luck to him. It's not Maguires fault that Leicester were smarter enough to pull Uniteds pants down over his transfer fee. Should send Ed an invoice for the lost transfer money.
Don't we need 8 HG players, with 4 of them being brought through the club youth system for the CL?

No; we can only register 17 non-homegrown players. Which means it makes sense to have (at least) eight homegrown players. But there's no requirement to have eight.
We're fine on that front anyway.
