The question is whether it is the role of the BBC to define who are and aren’t terrorists. What they say in terms of Hamas, a designated terrorist organisation by the UK government is entirely reasonable. It’s important to remember that the BBC is headquartered in the UK but goes out around the world, including in countries where Hamas is not a designated terrorist organisation.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hamas are terrorists. It’s not up for debate or interpretation at all. The BBC has chosen many times to use this description previously with other groups but isn’t doing now. That is choosing sides.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You believe hamas are terrorists. I believe hamas are terrorists. But bluntly, what you or I believe about Hamas is irrelevant.
You go to places in the Middle East, you go to Iran, to NATO-member turkey, they do not believe that Hamas are terrorists. So your positioning of “it’s not up for debate or interpretation at all” is demonstrably false.
The UK government currently prescribes Hamas as a terrorist organisation. That is the context around what is important when referring to Hamas. And so they will mention that the UK government prescribes Hamas as a terrorist organisation. But the BBC is not the UK Government, and I don’t think any of us should be arguing that the BBC should, without due consideration, be pumping out the opinion of the UK government.

Exactly. The BBC is a global media institution that for many decades has reported news globally to all continents and peoples.
Your point is that it’s an opinion and my point is that it is no more an opinion than it is to say that Isis are terrorists etc - something that the BBC were happy to call them. But not Hamas.
The BBC is showing inconsistencies which is why they are taking sides or perhaps doing it out of fear. Whatever reason is patently wrong and something that my license money shouldn’t be spent on.

I agree with their stance.
the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims
This is exactly what Hamas is and does. Hence why it is not up for debate or interpretation at all. Just because some stupid people might try to debate it doesn’t make it so to a reasonable person.
Being labelled a terrorist doesn’t make you wrong - we’ve seen this label incorrectly applies to lots of people over the years. And it could be argued that Israel are the same.
But let’s not pretend that regularly calling ISIS Al-qaeda types terrorists but refusing to call Hamas terrorists is a thing other than inconsistency and taking sides.
Call a spade, a spade.

Middle Eastern Pro Palestinian news outlet? No such thing exists and that isn't comparable to the BBC if it existed.
News outlets aren't supposed to be pro anyone so what you're comparing the BBC with is actually a Palestinian propaganda "news outlet", so not really a journalistic endeavour like the BBC but a means to spread a specific agenda. Al Jazeera doesn't call Hamas or Israel terrorists because they are, or aim to be an international media house reporting news across the world.
Is the BBC pro Israel then? Or Pro British government? Why compare them to a pro Palestinian "news outlet"?

----------------------------------------------------------------------

They haven't said that Hamas aren't terrorists there.
"Calling someone a terrorist means you're taking sides and ceasing to treat the situation with due impartiality.
"The BBC's job is to place the facts before its audience and let them decide what they think, honestly and without ranting."

Israel should either be suspended or entirely kicked out of the UN.
https://www.timesofisrael.com/un-condemned-israel-more-than-all-other-countries-combined-in-2022-monitor/
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The UN is powerless without USA, UK and that little cabal. They can hardly get anything significant done without the support of those countries. They almost run the UN.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Don't think thats fair, Russia and China veto as many security Council resolutions as the others.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
China doesn't veto as much as you'd think. No more than France. Fair enough about Russia but their figures include USSR days. Furthermore, the security council isn't the only way influence can be exerted.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Was only passing comment about, what I thought, was a bit myopic. The UN is rife with bias and agenda, it's what it's there for, jaw jaw better than war war and all that.

The BBC have not said 'they dont think that Hamas are terrorists'. But they defend their right not to call them 'terrorists' (or even 'freedom fighters' ) but are happy to report every time they mention Hamas that many GVTs and organisations describe them as 'terrorisits'. But they stop at saying that others have desribed them as 'freedom fighters'. So its still loaded on the side of Israel but its the best the BBC will do to claim to still being impartial.

Some things are so stoopid. Imagine the BBC actually siding with Hamas. Even the people making this claim know the BBC isn't siding with Hamas by their reference to them. What will we gain when they call them terrorists? Some people just love drama.

Drama? Mate I think you need to have a lie down.
Imagine for a second a Middle Eastern pro Palestinian news outlet reporting about Israel ‘neutrally’ and how the families of all of the victims would feel.
Now imagine how all of the families of victims of hamas, here in this very country, watching their national news channel refuse to call hamas terrorists.
Yeah they just love drama….

BBC are being shafted by the Israelis proper and good....It has gone from being this ultimate unbiased journalism to pandering to he Zionists, which is normal anyway for evry media outlet. The Zionist are a smaller number than the rest of us, but they control key infrastructures, including finance and media.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Rubbish- they would call Hamas terrorists if the naive were true.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This
The BBC are joke for not calling them terrorists
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The BBC regularly report that they are designated a terrorist group.
People say they want the BBC to report facts and remain neutral. Then when they do that, they get hammered for it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They are a prescribed terrorist organisation, by our government. Not calling them terrorists is taking sides.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No it's not. They are reporting that they are prescribed as terrorists by the government. Which is a fact.
Hamas also has a political wing, which has been elected in Gaza. The BBC directly calling them terrorists would be reporting an opinion that it isn't their role to give. By directly calling them that, they would be taking a side and influencing opinion.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Spot on CH4 uses the same approach

=====
