I can’t think of any signings post SAF that was consistent throughout (other than consistently bad) their time with us. Even just a solid 6.5 or 7/10 each week, each season?

Can anyone think of someone?

Probably only Varane but we know his issues too. When he’s fit he generally plays well.

I'd say Luke Shaw has probably been the most consistent and even he's had some ropey years.

Our recruitment over the last 10 years should be made into a Netflix series on how NOT to run a football club. It's been that bad.

Take out the injuries and probably just Varane. Maybe Zlatan but that was just a single season. Herrera?

It's shocking really.

Isn’t that also quite shocking? Our only choice (and I agree with you) is a player that we knew would be injured a lot and has been.

Herrera is a decent shout perhaps.

But what this also means is that we haven’t had even one standout successful signing in ten years and however much money. Chelsea level shocking just over a longer period.

Herrera was very overrated imo. Decent squad player but both LVG and Mourinho never really played him regularly.

You did sign him and then play him in a completely different position to where he was developed in to be fair.

So Zlatan & Varane have been the best signings after £1.2bn?

And as I mentioned on the manager out thread, we’ve not have best in class management either.

Haven't you heard Melts? We do that with nearly everyone we sign.

Because who likes playing players in systems they excel in eh? None of that silly nonsense at our club. 😂

People criticise United in the post-Ferguson era, but to be fair there is one area where we excel: if there is a way to ruin a player, we'll find it. We're absolutely elite at it.

He was also one of those players that always took two or three games back to back to find his rhythm. LvG kept putting him in and then out again which never helped, but ultimately all of our best games under LvG had standout performances from Herrera.

Mourinho used him a bit differently and he had a lot of good games under him, too.

If ETH wanted to go 4-3-3 with Mount as one of the box to box players (with more attacking leanings), a player just like Herrera would be perfect as the other box to box player with more defensive leanings.

Personally I always liked Herrera and he was one of those players that could have been a very excellent cog in strong midfield in the right set up - kind of like Henderson's role for Liverpool.

Instructions to get stuck in and try to make things happen.

I liked Herrera too.

Sometimes we need to think more about the collective rather than individuals. What'll work best when playing together.

On paper Liverpool's midfield in 2018/19/20 wasn't the most exciting but it was an excellent part of a very good unit overall.

Agreed Diafol. What harm can it do? It simply can’t make us worse. We’ll likely be sitting here at the same time next weekend discussing how awful we were against Fulham with Bruno and Rashford being huge factors.

posted on 29/10/23

They are the root of the problem IMO because they simply do not work hard enough....just watch Maddison (labelled a luxury or lazy player before this season) and Son, how much they press, how they sprint to close players down the keeper and what that makes happen. 3 of Spurs last 4 goals have come from pressing high up, and vs Fulham the other night Mads even said we pressed their CB onto his weak foot and as a co sequences his passes out were poor and we scored twice from these situations. So its not just pressing, it's intelligence that forces the error. Rashford and Bruno run around a bit but there is little intent or structure to it and today it was halfarsed at best.

That said, what's changed at Spurs is the manager, so ETH has to take blame for failing to get these players to work and/or still picking them

With q stipulation that if they perform well they stay in the team for Fulham. That should be motivation.

I do feel a bit for Bruno and Rashford though. I think they would really benefit from a break in some games. They have really been flogged. Perhaps a rest and a kick up the backside will do them good.

No he had far more attacking output than Grealish. His general performance level certainly wasn’t better.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Attacking output is why he's meant to be in the team mate. 🙃

Grealish can get with what you're saying because he's got Haaland and others doing what Rashford did for us last season.

Put Grealish in our team and you wouldn't be saying this. You'd want more output. 😂
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Grealosh did fk all today.

The difference is grealosh has multiple players moving around him all game, making his game much easier.

We have no tactics no game plan, nowt, so when our forwards get the ball it's like "what do I do now". No player moves, makes a run or gets into a good position.

The football IQ of these numpties is low, real low.

That being said, rashford was cack. Any time he did have the ball, he just gave it away. P!ss poor performance all round
