I don't know if the rules differ in Europe or something. We had one of those against us at home to Sociedad last year, where its off the body onto the arm. Should never be given.
Similar to Martinez v Socieded last season.
Tbh I think all this questioning of VAR and refs is dangerous and we should stop
Terrible decision but hopefully the way Newcastle dropped 3 points will be demoralising for them with our game coming up.
Be useful if UEFA can come out and explain this decision. If the rule is it can be a handball if it’s rebounded off the body then why would VAR need the ref to look at it?
It was harsh but they maybe should have had a pen earlier in the game for a foul in the box
No different to the Martínez handball off his leg straight on to his his arm, in Europe this is the way
Each to their own options of course but for me that should never be a pen under any interpretation of football rules, he's in motion, it hits his body for 2 feet away then rebounds onto his arm
Fck that
VAR is seriously killing my interest in football. I have little sympathy for Newcastle as they're only in the CL due to their dubious owners, but they were completely robbed there.
But if that is the rule why did VAR need to get the ref to look at it? It’s clear what happened.
Absolutely ridiculous if that is the rule. You can’t play football with your arms behind you back.
Baffling that they waved away a penalty not long before for another handball.
Sometimes it's so easy to check out from football
They should have had a pen before that with a blatant handball but this one was a shocker

I’d hardly call that one blatant either.

The foul was a clearer pen
All bets are off as long as your arm is raised.
A raised arm is considered as an alteration to your "silhouette" according to the current interpretation of the rules.
Nothing to do with Europe. That pen would have also been given in the PL.

What is the rule now...does any handball count whether it's an accident or not? Cause I can't see how that one tonight could ever be considered deliberate.
TNT are saying the rule is simply if the hand is in an unnatural position, which it wasn’t. The arms are up because he’s turning his body, that’s what you do.
If arms increase size of silhouette
That y players put arms behined thete back
Clear pk under those rules

Good.
It wouldn't be given in the PL as it bounced of his chest. UEFA don't have this part of their rules.
I don't get the outrage tbh. I hate VAR as much as anyone, but in this case, the defenders arm is elevated and slightly moves towards the ball, it hits his arm which stops the ball going past him. Its really unfortunate but it was always going to be given.
