might be the right time for him to think about moving into international football which I think will suit him more
Hasn't really achieved anything of note since the PL title during his second Chelsea stint.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
He got roma into back to back european cup finals.
That is remarkable.
he can do a job domestically on the continent and probably still good for the odd cup runs here too, but he'd be a disaster in the PL
Depends on what you mean by finished.
I do think Newcastle may push the button and take a punt on him. Personally though I can't see him winning another PL title.
Say what you want about his tactics - i certainly do, but he is capable of good cup runs.
Has this article been given a bump from 2018?
Should be forced to manage Forest as part of their punishment
I think he'd have to do a good job somewhere else in order to get a job at a big club again. His trajectory has already been on a downward spiral in terms of sizes of club he's been managing and both Spurs and Roma were failures to varying degrees. Even United could be seen as a failure overall.
To me he seems like a manager who just hasn't moved with the times, and the theme of his spells falling apart by the third season suggests he must struggle long term at remaining motivated and interested enough.
He's obviously still a very clever manager who can engineer a result in a given match - which serves him well in cups. He hasn't succeeded in getting any of his clubs since that last Chelsea title to perform at a high level with consistency, which is reflected in league performances. He didn't do an awful job at Roma, but they spent a hell of a lot on players and have the third highest wage bill in Serie A - and he has never finished above 6th. That's not the performance of one of the greatest managers in the world.
I'd say the Portugal job would be perfect for him now. He is still revered in his home country. As above, his strengths are suited to knock-out competitions. And in summer international tournaments, pragmatic, reactive tactics tend to be more disproportionately successful.
Basically Jo Mo has lost his mojo.
That happened when he went to spurs
hes basically now what Southgate would be like as a club manager
He has been for years. He’ll be off to Saudi Arabia soon I reckon, unless he gets a good International offer which currently doesn’t really have any top managers.
Hes become the very thing he mocked Wenger of being
Glad his "style" of football is no longer successful, that's for sure.
His achievements with Porto were amazing and you can excuse any style in that scenario due to the budget of the club (at least vs top CL sides) but beyond that he soured football even when winning.
Hopefully he fecks off to Saudi.

Agree, he should jump at any chance to take the Portugal job

But you wouldn't want him at Arsenal, neither would others, the coaching world has moved on

He was past it before he went to Spurs. I think the real turning point was during Real Madrid.
Maybe he's just one of those who after achieving the things he really wanted to - league titles, CL titles a treble, all at a rather young age, he's become less ambitious now having got older.

Nah, his first Chelsea team were immense. Scared me every time we played them and played some nice football.

His Real side were pretty entertaining weren't they? Think he got the highest scoring side in a La Liga season, while Pep’s Barca were around too.
I doubt Newcastle would go for Mourinho. The reason to get him would be running after a big name (and he still is a big name) to bring the project some glamour. But everything Newcastle's new ownership has done so far has been smarter than that. They have bought wisely and for the long-term construction of a good football team. They haven't chased star players on their way down, but very talented players before their prime years. Why would they do the opposite in their choice of coach? Particularly when Mourinho's style of football doesn't fit the principles the club is currently following.
yeah can't imagine Dan Ashworth would let that happen even if the Saudis were pushing for it
A classic case of a manager that is hell bent on not moving with times.
You can call this generation of players all you want and think they are soft, you still have to sing to their drum if you want to be successful. Mourinho the sort of manager can only succeed with mentality likes of Terry, Drogba and Lampard. Those days are long gone.
Yeah don’t see Newcastle going for him, doesn’t really fit their profile.
Inter Miami should take him and let him manage the Barca boys.

Unless he's angling to get himself sacked because they won't let him take the United DoF job!
