I'd imagine manned moon missions are really nice expensive and a man can't get anything different to what a rover can. It was just a matter of winning the race to be first in the 60s IMO.

I think the facts we have sent spacecraft to the edge of the solar system passing Pluto on the way is progress. numerous rovers on Mars, numerous orbiters around Saturn and Jupiter. My only regret is we have yet to really study Uranus and Neptune in any major way.

Over 50 years have passed now so what was the multi-billion dollar point of it all?

That's exactly what it was. The yanks won the space race and after that, Nixon removed the funding for Apollo missions 18, 19 & 20 and after that, there was no longer the political will to send further missions to the Moon.
But what we did get was a largely successful Shuttle program (barring the 2 heartwrenching accidents), Hubble, the ISS, various planetary probes, JSWT etc.
Now of course there are other players in the game apart from NASA and it'll only be a matter of time before Starship is perfected.

When you achieved something like that it doesn’t seem like a good use of funds to keep doing it.

The US paid out millions to invent a pen that works in space.. The Russians used a pencil
