Indeed, it's why I fear the return of YJB with the gloves in the summer when Brook returns.

Let's not pretend it's just the batting now...the greatest thing since sliced bread Lord Jimmy has picked up a massive 8 wickets this series. Now considering his age, he's not exactly in the plans for the future, so the sensible thing would have been to drop him for another player and let them get a taste of overseas test matches (considering the series is lost already). But personal records > team, obviously.
In all honesty though, this is more exciting than the Queen's platinum jubilee was. Bank holiday beckoning one hopes.
Well the problem has been the batting hasn't it? Lack of runs in the first innings has been a huge problem throughout the series, even in the game we won.
It's about picking your best team to win a test match, not picking what could be your best team in 2-3 years time. James Anderson is still in our best XI home and away and him being 41 doesn't change that.

What annoys me is this summer is a cash in one for the batsman given who we're playing, but they constantly drop Foakes for these type of games.
How is Foakes meant to show he actually can bat if he's only ever asked to bat in places like India where it's tough?

One of the big ironies of it all is that Foakes usually bats 5 anyway and suits batting higher whereas Jonny prefers to come in down the order which suits him better too. We just don't like the idea of a specialist bat at 7.
What a terrible day for England.
What an embarrassment this series has turned into.
A 4-1 thumping, which should be 5-zip really,
vs under-strength and inexperienced opps.
One positive is that people are finally starting to realise what I’ve been saying for years, that Stokes is awful.
An all rounder who can’t bowl, is average in the field and poor with the bat.
Someone commented on the BBC article that he’s the first Captain since Brearley to be picked purely for captaincy - he literally offers nothing else.

Yeah you'd think it would have been the obvious move to put Foakes at 5 or 6 and have one of or both Bairstow and Stokes drop below him.
Foakes struggles with the tail but usually plays well with other batsman, whereas Stokes is great at marshalling the bowlers.
Feels like it's probably an ego thing.
whats going to be said about this failure in India? nothing.. everyone is so cushy in their roles.
Its so easy for them to fail.

This could very well be true now...unless he can prove otherwise...
After Bairstow had failed for the first 3 tests he should have been dropped. but this was all to get in to "100 test match". he'll probably not get picked again in the summer.
But since Bairstow is one of the in crowd and part of the friends united. he needed to get his 100th cap.
There should be sod all sentiment in sport,
You look at Popes body language. when hes waiting to bat. he looks like a bag of nerves and hes played nigh on 50 tests. then he runs down the wicket to a leg spinner and gets stumped.
what will be said to him? NOTHING hes already nervous enough,
<heavysigh>

Jason Roy is the same....instead of looking for the ball that can get him four, he looks for the one that'll get him out...guess what he finds it
I don't think he ran down the wicket.
It doesn't look like he was ever going lofted, in fact he never looks to be trying to do anything other than play a forward defensive shot/smother it. I think he's misjudged the length completely.
Looks total amateur hour anyway. He's a really good bowler, but you shouldn't have a top order batsman done like that.
Jason Roy has a terrible technique. looks like hes chopping wood. he was never gonna make it a test level.
But since we had no one at the time,. he was chosen. thats always the issue with me.. the selection panel. always chose people "they like"
no reason they can't pick a player at county level and give them a series. the'y don't
Its amazing they even chose Hartley.
