Should the Premier League have playoffs?

Might make the season itself a bit boring. Would just make the race for top 4 less interesting as you only have to be in the top 7 to have a chance. Though playoffs themselves are always great.

100% no for me.

I think there are enough games as there is. Whilst this would benefit my team this season it'd feel a bit hollow finishing 7th and getting into the CL.

I'd actually prefer giving the CL spot to the FA Cup winners. At least they're 'champions' of something and it make make some clubs take the cup more seriously too.

The race for Top 4 becomes a race for Top 3 basically for the guaranteed CL places. But the difference is if you fall short, you still have a chance with the playoffs.

so the team finishing 4 with more points is not allowed to get champions league?

It would potentially really damage our Co efficient costing us future CL places.

We already suffered this year by having Newcastle and United being dog awful and finishing bottom of their groups, imagine if a Brighton, Wolves or Palace gate crashed it.

I don’t like the playoffs much either, finish 3rd 20 points in front of the side in 7th but they get promoted instead of you by virtue of winning a one off game at Wembley

I'd be up for relegation/promotion play-offs - 2 up, 2 down and then the 3rd bottom goes into play-offs with Championship 3rd-5th.

We did have it back in the 80s, didn't last long.

If there were European play-offs I would suggest there would be a case for FA Cup and League Cup winners getting in ahead of 6th and 7th - obviously most of the time the winners would be top 3 or top 5 at worst anyway.

No way, and while we are at it, scrap the play offs down the leagues too... It's an absolute joke.

If you finish ina position after 38 games thats your finishing position. leave things alone. . would feel bad if a team finished the play offs and got 3rd only to lose in a play off to the team finishing third bottom in the higher up league.

That's why I'd give it to the FA Cup winners. Most of the time they finish in the top 4 anyway.

Doesn't 5th place get top 4 this year anyway?

There shouldn't be play offs for anything, period.

You should earn these things on merit. For example the top three in the championship should be promoted automatically.

Whilst I'll admit to liking the drama of the playoffs it is unfair. I know people will state that every team knows what they need to do at the start though and it does keep seasons alive for clubs I suppose.

Wouldn't you just probably end up with a situation where the same 6 teams yo-yo between the PL and Championship every year if you did that? The playoffs gives lesser Championship teams a chance.

With Europe very likely to go down to 8th place this year and usually 6 teams in a relegation scrap for most the season - you are only going to get a couple of clubs in that middle band with faaack all going on at the end of the year. 9/10th are likely to still be in with a chance of Europe going into the last few games, so we’re probably only talking 4 teams with nowt to play for.

Not really. Its only 4th place that potentially loses out, but how often does the 4th place team win the CL the next season? Chelsea did recently obviously, but aside from that I don't think it happens that much. Plus with this new system, the really good teams would just aim to finish top 3 instead of top 4.

Very rare for the 3 relegated teams to finish top 3 the next season. This season should be a rare occasion it does.

I suppose the PL is different to the Championship that way in that usually there is something to play for. In the PL though most teams usually have sold their tickets for games whereas in the Championship clubs may need the lure of the excitement the play offs can still offer to ensure good gates.

True, but this would have repercussions. From around January 80% of teams, those in midtable would just be coasting to the end of the season with nothing to play for. Quality of games would probably be impacted.

Don’t need to win it, just get through the group stage or at worst finish 3rd and then do well in Europa.

Like I said, we can’t have another year where a United or Newcastle seriously harm our Co efficient by finishing bottom of their groups. Fortunately this year, City, Liverpool and Villa will likely go far in their comps if not win them

The prize money in this day and age of FFP also has a big impact on Prem sides

I always think the playoff in Germany where the 3rd from bottom side of the Bundesliga play the 3rd from top side of Bundesliga 2 to see who stays/goes up? I'm not aware of the stats but you'd think the team who finished 3rd would be in far better place mentally having had a good season compared to the side who nearly finished bottom?
