Belgium league is probably the craziest system. Last season Top 4 had play-off for the title (round robin mini league) and the next 4 play-off for ECL. Points won in the regular season are halved then carried over, so it is possible that one team has no chance anyway.
This season top 6 go into title mini-league play-offs, next 6 play-off for a European play-off and bottom 4 go into relegation play-offs.
However, 5th and 6th in the title play-offs don't get Europe and 4th have to play the winner of the second group for a place!
The Eredivisie have a 4 team play-off for ECL, 5th to 8th.
For this would make it more interesting

I always think the playoff in Germany where the 3rd from bottom side of the Bundesliga play the 3rd from top side of Bundesliga 2 to see who stays/goes up? I'm not aware of the stats but you'd think the team who finished 3rd would be in far better place mentally having had a good season compared to the side who nearly finished bottom?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Memory says the top tier team almost always wins.

I certainly think that is a fairer way of doing it than how we do.
Take the championship as an example, again, Hull are 17 points off of Ipswich now. If that were the same at the end of the season it would be harsh on Ipswich if a team that far behind them were to win the playoffs.

So you can finish near the top, miss out on European football while a team that finished below you gets European football?
No thanks.
I'm a big Rugby League fan too and don't like it being used in that sport. League winners should be the champions. Finishing 5th and hitting form at the back end of the season shouldn't be enough to be champions.
Football needs to be left alone. It didn't become the global game by chance.

There shouldn't be play offs for anything, period.
You should earn these things on merit. For example the top three in the championship should be promoted automatically.

I agree. While they are exciting it’s unfair. Imagine finishing 7th and fluking through a CL play off.
If the FA cup spot had a CL place.
Wigan in the Championship would have played CL football, which would be kind of insane and hurt the co-efficient for a season.
Because it would be so infrequent that something like that or another team outside the CL place usuals wins the FA cup it would be a great reward. The problem is if you get a few of those teams winning it in a row.
The champions league already has its own champions league play offs, which some of the PL teams used to have to play in once upon a time
Playoffs sound like a great way to to never have Spurs in the CL again. They can't win anything.
This would be an interesting idea if it weren't for the amount of variables already with the European places. If they did it this season both finalists could get CL, the other two would get Europa. Not really much jeopardy
100% no, only playoffs the PL should have (if they are introduced) is for relegation. Playoff winner should play 16th place over 2 legs. 17th and 18th go down. Get rid of 19th and 20th teams
Awful idea and terrible for our coefficient rankings.
Can you imagine 7th luck boxing a CL spot based on 2 or 3 games then getting smashed every game? That'd be the reality most of the time.
If u are there are 38 games u deserve it. CL is huge money wise and it'd actually have a negative effect on lots of teams that could get in, if they got a spot after finishing 5-6-7th etc
Few teams have the squads to balance all comps.
Even spurs, that have spent big in recent years, would see a big difference in their levels and consistency, if they had to play CL and PL next season.

It would potentially really damage our Co efficient costing us future CL places.
We already suffered this year by having Newcastle and United being dog awful and finishing bottom of their groups, imagine if a Brighton, Wolves or Palace gate crashed it.
I don’t like the playoffs much either, finish 3rd 20 points in front of the side in 7th but they get promoted instead of you by virtue of winning a one off game at Wembley
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not really. Its only 4th place that potentially loses out, but how often does the 4th place team win the CL the next season? Chelsea did recently obviously, but aside from that I don't think it happens that much. Plus with this new system, the really good teams would just aim to finish top 3 instead of top 4.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Good point - take the 4th place away from England.
Just wrong to play the 38 game then have your destiny potentially turn on injuries, fluke goals or bad refereeing decisions instead of these things by and large averaging out over the season.
Of course it is TV that is calling the shots.
Would make more sense to give the FA Cup winner a Champions League spot
The play-offs is a really flawed concept. Look at the difference between third and sixth place in the Championship.
Definitely not! The play-offs idea ridiculous!
Teams earn the right be promoted over the season, a team can finish 3rd but then can lose out to a team finishing 6th it’s just not right!

By that logic, how is it fair if a team that finishes 8th or below but wins the league cup gets Conference league over 7th place? The team that finishes higher in the league loses out in that case.
But the other team won another trophy, the league cup, so they deserve it? OK, but in the scenario you've described, the team in 6th wins another trophy, the playoff trophy, so surely they deserve it too by the same logic.

This is some weird logic considering the league and league cup are different competitions. The issue raised in the championship playoffs is you can be good enough for 6th all season then beat the 3rd place team in a one off game.
How is it weird logic? The 6th place team can miss out on Europa league football to a team who finishes 10th or 11th if that team wins the FA Cup. So it's already possible to qualify for Europe ahead of a team who's finished higher in the league than you. People are saying it wouldn't be right and should never be introduced when it's already possible.
