do think we should have taken Grealish too as he actually does offer something different, an x-factor. Not saying he would start but he always takes on players and wins fouls.

What the deal with White again… was it a bust up, that man’s haven’t dealt with?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's a confusing situation. The reports were he left the squad due to a bust up with one of the coaching staff. Southgate had since attempted to call him up but Edu told him White doesn't want to make himself available. Southgate said he doesn't really know why but it's not due to a bust up with any of the coaching staff.

We have a real problem in defence. Maguire never really cut it for me, but the fact that Southgate refused to try out players for many of the games means we have no proven replacements. I think our best defender to partner Stones would be Gomes. But surely taking a left footer like Colwill could have been an option. Likewise, Chilwell has been average when he's played this season, but he's left footed and can actually cover Shaw and give us something going forward, unlike Trippier.
I do think we should have taken Grealish too as he actually does offer something different, an x-factor. Not saying he would start but he always takes on players and wins fouls.
For all the quality we have in certain areas, we do seriously lack in others, and in depth.

Guehi plays on the left and will almost certainly now start alongside Stones. Yes he is right footed, but he is very comfortable there.
I would have taken Branthwaite though

I'd have took Grealish over Toney. Really no reason to bring Toney. Kane is obviously going to start every game, unless it's the third group stage game and England are qualified or he gets injured. So Watkins may get one game. If the unthinkable happened and both Kane and Watkins got injured there's Bowen and Bellingham as a false 9. Bowen is much more likely to play than Toney. You could actually make a better case for Toney out for Braithwaite.

I think England looks relatively vulnerable at the back, especially the fullback positions. Not saying that there were better options, but this squad is not as stacked as the most media wants you to believe.
Dropping Maddison and Grealish might lose you some unpredictability and creativity against teams that park the bus. I don't really know Gordon and Bowen that well, but aren't they more cookie cutter/text book players?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I agree on Grealish but I am not that fussed about Maddison. Likewise, Gordon and Bowen are, meh, for me. Glad Eze made it as he gives us some directness although we will have to see 8f he can cut it at international level. We have Walker as a full back and he offers a little of everything but the left back position and the partner for Stones is a worry imo
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah I mean if the other guys are in their club form, you don't really need Maddison. Trying to see what a plan b looks like when things aren't going well, maybe Gordon is that Wallcot like player as Strike mentioned his pace.
Surprisingly there are not many countries with a big pinchhitter, the days of Crouch, Heskey, Pi-Air, are mostly gone...
Wonder if we might slot Gomez in to help with defending in the air, we’ll be weak there without Maguire, and knockout ties can so often be decided on a set piece.

By the way, haven't seen anyone mention it yet, but is the GK position not worrying?

The problem is there are too many "ifs". Remember that Shaw wasn't having the best of seasons before his injury, what, five months ago? He has to recover, get fit and find form in a tournament situation. That's what makes the absence of a left footed defender a puzzle. The right footers will offer no width and find it difficult to link up. Unless he plays the left back inverted to give more cover in the centre and allows or Walker or TAA attacking freedom.

He will surely play the first choice defence tomorrow - my guess is that it will be Walker, Stones, Guehi and Shaw.

I'm quite happy with the make up of the squad which apart from Ben White ludicrously not being involved is on paper I think the best squad of all the competing nations and gives England their best opportunity to finally win a major tournament....Only indecisive, over causcious and a non pro active attitude not making the most of our many wonderful creative, attack minded goal scoring options can stop us.

I dunno, is Shaw even in line to be fit for the group stage?

He has to be right? Surely they aren’t taking Luke faaacking Shaw just for the outside hope of a knockout game appearance.

By the way, haven't seen anyone mention it yet, but is the GK position not worrying?
Ramsdale hasn't played that much, Pickford is playing for relegation fodder Everton and I lost sight of Henderson when he left Utd (Sheffield?)

Not really no. Pickford is the established number one and only injury will change that. Pickford hasn’t let England down yet and has the rare achievement of winning a penalty shoot out in England colours

Oh okay I missed that.
Trippier at Left back I presume - there’s our major weakness. I presume Rice will be covering a lot and Gallagher might have to start

The problem is, who else is there? Ramsdale hasn't played this season, Pope's been injured and there's no groundswell of talented English keepers.

Yeah or maybe Gomez starts against Iceland.
