Wonder if we might slot Gomez in to help with defending in the air, we’ll be weak there without Maguire, and knockout ties can so often be decided on a set piece.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He will surely play the first choice defence tomorrow - my guess is that it will be Walker, Stones, Guehi and Shaw.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I dunno, is Shaw even in line to be fit for the group stage?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He has to be right? Surely they aren’t taking Luke faaacking Shaw just for the outside hope of a knockout game appearance.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He said he’s on track to take some part in the second group game.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh okay I missed that.
Trippier at Left back I presume - there’s our major weakness. I presume Rice will be covering a lot and Gallagher might have to start
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah or maybe Gomez starts against Iceland.
---------- -----------------------------------------------------------
Think Gómez is the one defensive inclusion that does make sense. He's probably the best of the right footers on the left, especially going forward and is solid. He's a player I like
He offers fack all going forward, but has looked decent there for Liverpool when he’s had to play. Could use his strength in the air as well.
Is Maguire injured? Seems a strange exclusion with players like Dunk going.

We have a real problem in defence. Maguire never really cut it for me, but the fact that Southgate refused to try out players for many of the games means we have no proven replacements. I think our best defender to partner Stones would be Gomes. But surely taking a left footer like Colwill could have been an option. Likewise, Chilwell has been average when he's played this season, but he's left footed and can actually cover Shaw and give us something going forward, unlike Trippier.
I do think we should have taken Grealish too as he actually does offer something different, an x-factor. Not saying he would start but he always takes on players and wins fouls.
For all the quality we have in certain areas, we do seriously lack in others, and in depth.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Guehi plays on the left and will almost certainly now start alongside Stones. Yes he is right footed, but he is very comfortable there.
I would have taken Branthwaite though
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Branthwaite should be there. You're really going to struggle aerially if Stones and Guehi are your centre backs.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Maybe that’s why Dunk is going
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, I was referring to the comment that Stones and Guehi should be starters. I find Dunk to be slow tbh and Branthwaite would have ticked both them boxes as well as being naturally left footed.
I guess cos we're against fodder in the groups he might start Trippier at LB, don't think he really deserves it though.
Looking really really weak in defence. Stones isn’t fit either.
Surprised Toney made it given he missed out on half the season

You have to worry about his mental health if he genuinely thinks this squad of bang average flops has any chance of winning this tournament

They gotta chance obvs butt look very unbalance
I think any team with Rice, Foden, Saka, Bellingham & Kane in it will have a chance, but it's really unbalanced.
The worry would be that Southgate will look to play very dull football keeping a lot of those players subdued, just to make up for the defensive frailties.

I think the bigger issue is whether they have the mental fortitude to rise to occasion on the big international stage. Better players than them have failed to do that.

What the deal with White again… was it a bust up, that man’s haven’t dealt with?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's a confusing situation. The reports were he left the squad due to a bust up with one of the coaching staff. Southgate had since attempted to call him up but Edu told him White doesn't want to make himself available. Southgate said he doesn't really know why but it's not due to a bust up with any of the coaching staff.

Feels like Southgate handling the White situation poorly has come back to bite him a little with these defence issues. A player with his quality and versatility in the squad would make a big difference.
