This has given me an idea, might do a Scholes v Gerrard article, some early feedback would be appreciated
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why lower Scholes to comparisons with Gerrard. He should be compared to greats like Zico, Matthaus, Zindane and Xavi

Easily Cristiano Ronaldo. Not really a debate

As a footballer, Ronaldo Nazario was better.

Injuries stopped him.

Is it fair to say that in the CR7 era the wealth disparity between elite clubs and the rest was greater, and the consequent dominance they exerted benefits the stats of individual players? R9 at Barcelona had some talented team mates but probably not quite the supporting cast he'd have enjoyed a decade later.

Another observation I'd make is that CR7's incredible goals to game numbers at his peak are as much a product of superhuman efficiency / focus as superhuman talent. No other player in the modern game is close to him in being ready for every chance and so focused on executing perfectly. That's not an argument against him, but I think it's understandable that many are more impressed by a player who showed more imagination and audaciousness in his goal scoring, and who made impossible things look easy.

Haaland is outstatting CR7. Record goalscorer in the PL in first season at a young age. Out does Ronaldo in every department apart from speed. Almost a goal a game in his career whilst still young. He scores more goals than CR7 so he is better.

Well yes, it is a debate. The OP asked for at their peak, not their careers. Some seem to forget that.

If you are finding this hard to decide then sorry but you need to watch more football.

Peak fat Ronaldo lasted about 2.5 seasons.
Peak CR7 lasted about 10.

It's not even close. I have FR as an elite level player for sure. He was very scary during those 2 or so seasons but there's been a lot of "very scary" players.

CR7 on the other hand in what he has done, achieved and his longevity is mind bending.

CR7 is a top 5 player of all time
FR is a top 15 player of all time

----------------------------------------------------------------------

It’s always those that say ‘you need to watch more football’ who are the ones who need to watch more
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Are you saying he needs to watch more football?

He clearly wasn't the best in any measurable way but Ronaldinho on his day was the best player I've seen play.

Fat Ronaldo is closer to that "best" than CR7 but out the three CR7 was the best player overall

I always say the same. In terms of natural ability, he's the best I've seen. He just liked to party and wasn't especially driven or professional.

R9 got me on the edge of my seat more and had a better tournament record, well certainly in the big one but overall, CR7

Who would you pay most to go watch - Best, Ronaldinho, R9, JJ, Maradona and R7 is well down that list.

Even when R7 was doing stepovers he was cvnty.

Could those saying CR7 was better overall please explain what they mean without alluding to the fact he had a longer and more successful career?

posted on 11/6/24

CR7 was defo the most effective, professional, dedicated of the two which in turn allows him to post such high stats and trophies, R9 was all about the almost 100% natural talent, I say "almost" as he must have trained and been coached to a certain degree but saying who's "better" is tough and down to how individuals view their choice?

One point I dont think has been made yet is how good would it have been to see them both at their peaks in the same side?

posted on 11/6/24

at their peak R9 was a higher level.

CR7 was able to sustain a higher level over his whole career.

Longevity and the amount of goals are massive things to consider. CR7 was better in the air, could play on the wing, obviously in his early career and could score different types of goals, unlike R9 who was more of a box player, although did score one or two from mazy runs.

Not in this article it’s not.

Also, R9 certainly wasn’t a box player.

Is it obviously R9?

Cristiano won more, scored more, played longer, had all the skill and speed R9 had.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Ronaldo had skills, but he wasn't as gifted as R9 in that department.

The difference between them is the mentality and injuries.

Both incredible though.
