Good age and a quality CB, if he’s cheap enough we can bring him in as well as another CB for a combined fee of less than Everton want for the English dude, then fantastic business. If he’s the only defender we bring in, then we need to get really lucky with injuries.
Pros
Age
Leadership
Defensive ability
Technical ability
Intelligence
Price
Cons
Injury record
Wages
Lack of pace
He's clearly a very good defender (Bayern fans seem to think he's their best and recently made a petition to not sell him) but his injury record is a real worry made worse by the fact our club have a terrible record with injuries themselves. If (and that's a big IF) he can overcome the injuries (and many Bayern fans think they are a little overblown) then he could be a very good addition even if he is quite slow.
Similar things were said about Varane and look what happened and with our history of injuries I am very concerned about getting in anyone who has their own injury problems.
Is his pace an issue?
I know you can find odd clips to back up almost any point in football but I did see a clip of him catching up with and dispossessing Mbappe when Mbappe had a head start.
He might not be quite slabhead slow but he's still not that fast and if you're going to play him alongside Martinez who also isn't the fastest you are probably going to limit your options.
I read it's the main reason Kompany is happy to move him on (as well as the club wanting to lower their wage bill).

The pace is a bit of a myth with De Ligt, he is slow on the turn though, which Maguire also struggles with.
He is the Dutch Eric Dier. Good luck putting him on a high line.
Yeh, I think we are getting done over again…
It’s Owen Hargreaves 2.0.
Bayern on the scam… and Ineos falling for it.
But I hope I’m wrong, cos there is a good player there.
But we need another CB

If one were to agree that he has pace, then that puts his only Cons. as injury & wages....in which case why would Bayern even contemplate selling him, let a lone for a knock-down price.
I think his Pros. are being slightly over-egged and he actually doesn't possess much pace. May be a bit faster than Maguire but that aint saying much.
If this was the Bayern of 5-10 years ago then I would be more worried but they don't seem to be as well run these days. The main reason they want to sell seems to be to lower their wage bill and also wanting to bring in Tah.
The fact Bayern fans (from what I've read) are angry he's being sold and think he's their best defender and that his injury problems aren't as bad as being reported gives me some hope that he won't be another Hargreaves/Bastian.
Think he's missed 9 games a season on average through injury.
There can't be many players that two top clubs have decided to let go, and they go on to be a success at a third.
I don't watch Bundesliga so don't know how he's done but at the most simplistic level it surely must be a concern that Juve and Bayern were/are happy to see him leave?

His pace is 65 on FIFA. Maguire's is only 47.
I know it is only a game, but their database is pretty extensive.
Like him and think he’d be a good signing, but would depend on someone pacy next to him, I feel.

I’m not the biggest fan, but I don’t think this is quite the case. He’s been the main cb at both clubs, but it’s my understanding it’s been a financial decision for both clubs more than anything.
Juve because they were in the shiiiit financially, he was on massive wages and Bayern offered a huge fee.
With Bayern it looks like they’re having a big squad revamp, reducing their upper limit of their wage bill, and he’s a saleable asset on huge wages that they’re willing to sacrifice to achieve that.
Apparently it’s a reason Bayern could sell Kimmich, because they’ll need some sales to partly fund their spending spree, and he’s on silly money as well.
Is there a defender out there that our ''supporters'' won't find fault with?

Just looking this up on https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matthijs-de-ligt/verletzungen/spieler/326031. The numbers below are for club and country combined, so they look worse than they are in terms of club impact.
23/24 - missed 20 games
22/23 - missed 5
21/22 - missed 2
20/21 - missed 28 (most of which was a shoulder injury and Covid)
19/20 - missed 5
18/19 - missed 3
17/18 - missed no games through injury
16/17 - missed 2

Always makes me chuckle that whenever potential transfer targets are discussed, no matter what the position, the fans can only ever name 2 or 3 and say that theirnis currently a 'dearth of quality.........' then have very strong opinions on the left field target that gets linked.

There's surely scope for us to to offer him a pay rise while still reducing the wage bill of our defence due to Varane's departure.
As I see it, he's not as good a defender as Varane, but much more accomplished with the ball at his feet, and in Onana, Lisandro and him, we'd have a much better platform for playing out from the back. If the asking price works in terms of everything else we need to accomplish in the market this summer, then it mainly comes down to doing very rigorous due diligence on his medical profile.
Still wouldn't be averse to buying a really talented young prospect instead though, assuming we're not going to shift Maguire this summer.

Fair point about the rest. Though I’d be surprised if we get the high line so many want without replacing the rest of the back four as well.

We could conceivably play Martinez as LB in some games or Todibo more as a RB of sorts. Especially if ball progression from the back is what ETH wants more than flying full backs.
