As bloodred says, Joao Neves is very dynamic and strong in the tackle, as well as being excellent on the ball. Meanwhile Kobbie is developing physically - looks a bit taller and stronger than he was a year ago to me. And while Kobbie is superb at holding onto the ball and at selection, timing and execution of short passes, he's not (yet) a player with elite through balls. I think Ugarte e.g. would be an upgrade on Casemiro / Amrabat, but I'd still prefer a player who provides technicality as well as physicality next to Mainoo. And besides that, hopefully no one on this forum wants Kobbie at his age playing 50+ 90 minutes next season. So is it a great idea to have him as the only CM in our squad who is comfortable on the ball?

PSG about to sign Joao Neves which could mean we’re getting Ugarte.
-----------------------------------------------------------
I'd love us to sign Joao Neves instead, if the fee is way below his release clause, as rumoured.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Does he work with Mainoo? A small scheming midfielder is far on the list of needs as talented as he may be.

We ideally need someone with a bit of vision, this isn’t something mainoo really has

Problem with McTominay is that he offers virtually nothing as a DM. His only positive is he gets the odd goal in the dying minutes of games but as an actual midfielder he's pretty pointless. I'd way prefer we use Mount if he can stay fit.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Totally agree, I just don't think that's how it plays out.
Just seems that nobody is interested in Casemiro (rightly so) and we don't have the numbers in midfield, or the budget to replace them to lose both.
There's lots need doing, we still need a CF (we only have 2), a RW, 2x CM, 1x LB, 1x RB (if AWB leaves) and another CB.
Can't do it all I guess.
------------------------------------------------------------
Depends on who could come through the academy. Both Garnacho and Mainoo were surprised to me, especially the latter. So there could be other surprises
Another thing to consider in putting together the midfield is that we seem to be building a team that is going to peak in 3-4 years when you look at the age profile and rawness of players we're investing in. It looks to me that Bruno will not be the pivotal player in the team by then, if he's still at the club. At the moment he's undroppable because he's so productive, but that limits our options with the remaining two midfielders. It probably makes sense with our recruitment to not fixate only on which two can play behind Bruno now, but being ready for a three-man unit where the ball progression, chance creation and rest defence responsibilities are more evenly distributed.

The impact Mainoo has had must have surprised everyone. But he was picked out as a special talent and fast-tracked into the first team (leading to the sales of two highly rated academy midfielders in an older age group who seemed to have a chance of being on the fringes of the senior squad). I don't see any academy midfielders being prepared in the same way.
Forgot about Amrabat, do we have to pay if we want him another year or can we do another loan?

This.
Life would be made much easier if Casemiro suddenly remembered he's a top player and his injury hit season turns out to be a blip on an otherwise injury-free career (and if we are more compact as a team rather than leaving whoever plays in CM to perish in acres of space).
I can't imagine all three of Eriksen, Casemiro & McT will be here at the start of the season so we must be bringing at least one player in.
Dazza, Berbaking: if we recruit one midfielder this summer, what profile do you think the squad needs most? And who would the ideal player be (bearing in mind stratospheric prices aren't an option)?
For me that's a difficult question because we need a lot of different things in the midfield. We need someone other than Mainoo who can do ball retention if we don't want to break him. We need better progressive passing from deep than anyone in the squad can do. And we need players who can patrol space. It's obviously a task that will require multiple windows, and in the meantime, I'm not sure what the first priority is. Perhaps that depends on who will sell, both in terms of how much budget is available and what attributes we are replacing.
My preferences for Joao Neves - if he were available for as little as €70m - is based on the fact that he ticks more than one box (could see him as both alternative to Mainoo and partner). But also because if we're going to assemble the midfield over 2-3 windows, maybe just go for the best available player when you have the chance.

Agree, Busby. He's another player who doesn't really have a clear purpose in a team where Bruno always starts. Could be one of two 8s but he's not going to be great in a pivot and not going to be as productive as Bruno or as alternatives on the wings.
There's rumours flying all over the place this summer. I've no idea what the clubs priorities are now that we've signed a CF and CB.
Still talk that we're in for De Ligt, which would stabile the CB position for the long term.
Still talk of Toney, though I think there are better value options if we are in for a third striker (David has a release clause around £25m).
Ugarde is the only midfielder we've had strong links with, I can't imagine we plan to go into the season with our current options, maybe we need to sell Casimiro/ McTominay to buy though.
Perhaps we are after a midfielder that hasn't been mentioned yet. This Yoro deal progressed quickly it seems.
The player that came on for Spain at HT on Sunday seemed a good player, as did Ruiz, in the middle of the park for Spain. Just someone who's decent technically and with a good engine would be an upgrade I reckon.
There had been quite a bit of noise about us being interested in Yoro along with Real and Liverpool for quite a few weeks.
Ugarde is the only midfielder so far that I can recall the media claiming we're interested in.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's a good question and a difficult one because, as you say, we can't meet the needs of our midfield in one single player.
For me, I want to see more power and dynamism in midfield with a leaning towards the defensive side of the game. When I think about the Mainoo-Rice pairing for England, I actually like those attributes but for me I think Southgate played them the wrong way around. Southgate had Rice sitting and Mainoo was allowed to try and join the attack a little further up.
Mainoo isn't super dynamic. He's more languid in his style and looks better to me when he's stationed more disciplined. I also don't think he has that killer pass in his game yet. His passing is very, very good indeed from slightly deeper areas. To me he's more of a midfield conductor (with the added skill on the ball to beat players and as we've seen, an occasional eye for goal) who plays the pass before the assist than the "killer pass" sort of player. That sort of player is really hard to find so I'd want to develop him in that role longer term.
What I'd want next to him is a more defensively minded ground-covering player who can get a bit more box to box. Probably the closest such player we've had in recent years would be Ander Herrera - full of energy, tenacity, read the game well but was secure on the ball (actually very underrated technically I think). I suppose the best player we've seen like this in the last few seasons would be Kante - often not actually deployed as a CDM but tasked with covering more ground up and down the pitch.
I remember we had this same conversation last summer about the need to improve the overall athletic profile of the team. I don't know too much about Ugarte but he sounds like that kind of all action, aggressive midfield dynamo that would slot in well next to a ball-player like Mainoo. I recall us also being linked to Joao Gomes at Wolves earlier in the summer (or maybe even January - I can't recall). From what I've seen he looks like that kind of high energy all-rounder as well. Someone like that would be my first pick from the various midfield profiles we could examine. After that it's more up in the air as you can make a case for different needs - certainly another ball player would be useful (though as I've mentioned before, if we sign two CB's we'd possibly have the option of using Martinez in midfield on occasion and I think he'd slot in there absolutely fine).
