I can see Eth going Uber defensive against the top sides by playing Ugarte and Casemiro in place of Mainoo otherwise Ugarte to alternate with Casemiro. Imagine the scenes if an upsurge in Casemiro's form keeps Ugarte out!
At the rate it’s taken us to build a half decent midfield, Tom Cleverley will be back at the club as manager.
-------------------------------------
Only on the condition that Anderson is his assistant.
I think this could be a very good signing to give options to ETH, seemingly adding a different skillset to midfield.
No Barry, but I have never seen him play.
Having Collyer in the wings when he gets injured will shut up 52's detractors.
Good squad depth though if we get him. Impressive stats as well according to Process' link.

Then we have limited means to spring a counter-attack. More likely we're defensive in terms of compactness and having a lower block than than playing without creativity in midfield.
Mount is a strange signing but we knew from his Chelsea days he was creative and a goal threat so if he can rediscover that to add to his work rate and pressing ability he may have a future. He's not everyone's cup of tea. I'm not completely sold on him either TBF.
------------------------------------------
There's also plenty of evidence to suggest he's just a very expensive workhorse, for England especially.
He's not going to play in place of Bruno, he's not a wide player and he's not a central midfielder and I don't want him playing in a front two.
If we needed anyone from Chelsea last summer it was Kovacic but whether he'd have said yes to us if we'd got there before City is another matter.
I think we’ll look to use high pressing and counter pressing as a means to create chances a fair bit this season. If Mount and Casemiro are fit they’ll be integral to that.
Yeah it'll be the same as last season but we'll execute it more effectively due to having better suited personnel to that tactic.
It'll probably be our main chance creation route again seeing as we still struggle to break teams down with more settled possession.
I don’t think we really looked to use it that much last season, though. Unsurprisingly, because of all the injuries.
How we go about breaking teams down with settled possession is difficult to say. I think there will be better link play in and around the box, but it’s so dependent on the fitness and form of the squad as well. Particularly the full backs, because Mazraoui and Shaw could have a really positive influence on us breaking teams down if they can play more than ten games between them.
Looking forward to see how Zirkzee links up with the rest of the team as well. Even if he doesn’t score that many, I think he could make us more creative and fun to watch than the Danish Weghorst.
You watch all the pieces click into place and we win the PL.

This you admitting you don’t rate Rasmus?
You say that like I haven’t been slagging him off since we signed him.
I stole that one off Hafi anyway, when he called him the rapid Weghorst.
We weren't great at doing it but I think it was still one of our main avenues to generate chances as well as the counter-attack due to our progression issues, our inability to sustain possession in the final third and create chances through more sophisticated patterns of play.
I think it's part of the reason we often went direct last season because the idea was if we lost possession we'd try and counter-press and win the ball back quickly high up.
I think that was more to do with a lack of quality and confidence in playing out from the back, and the front three thriving in transition, rather than looking to counter press.
Pretty sure the numbers declined as the season went on with our pressing numbers, certainly looked it from what I’d noticed.
Things should be quite different with it when you consider the changes this summer, not just with the squad but the coaches as well.
Still think we’ll see a fair bit of horses for courses given all the games we’ll play and the profile of the squad. We can’t really stick to playing the same way all season with these players.

I thought that was obvious when he said he would prefer Eric Choupo Moting last season.

That's not surprising given we're not one of the most physically fit sides in the league and how we played for most of last season.
Well yeah, but that’s my point about it not being a tactic we used that much last season. Obviously the reasons for it are numerous.
Ten Hag’s going to need to rotate and manage the squad better this season than he has been if we’re to maintain the ability to play at a high intensity for most of the season.
Whilst I have my issues with the squad, I think he’s got more depth this season for rotation this season than he has in the last two.
We did it when we could and aside from the odd game when we played in a lower block because I lost count of how many times I said the midfield and defence weren't backing up the press last season.
Ten Hag was saying in October/November in response to Carragher saying his team hadn't improved that they had and they were top in terms of regains in both the final and middle thirds of the pitch and even up until April at least we were third in terms of high turnovers.
Apologies that's not right, we were actually third from shots as a result of high turnovers in April, not in number of turnovers.

I certainly do.
How injury prone is he? We’ve got to consider that his propensity to get injured will multiply by a factor of 3 when our coaches and medical team get their hands on him, so realistically how many games will we get out of him for £51m?

He hasn't had a single injury in the last 3 years, apparently.
You just know what will happen on his first day at Carrington...
