Sancho set to leave. Sterling the easiest 'swap' apparently.

I'd not be fully against Sterling to be honest if he could get near the form he had at City. He does have a happy scoring knack and he'd surely be better than Sancho. Has also played in the false 9 role at times if I recall.

If we sign Sterling it will just undue the great work INEOS have done this summer.

We need some more proven attackers, whether it’s Sterling or someone else. Bruno and Rashford are the only ‘proven’ attackers we have. Antony should be but he’s shiiiiit, and then you’re looking at Garnacho, Amad, Hojlund and Zirkzee, players that haven’t proven themselves to be options to be relied upon.

IMO Toney is exactly the sort of player Utd needed.

A team that has scored 58 & 57 goals in the last 2 seasons needs someone capable of putting the ball in the back of the net better than Rasmus, who doesnt look like a natural finisher. Zirkzee looks OK but he's unlikely to be a big numbers guy. Toney's been better than a 1 in 2 striker for Brentford
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hojlund's only PL season. Goal from play every 217 minutes.

Toney's best PL season. Goal from play every 211 minutes.

But go on.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

One playing for a newly promoted team the other playing for an expensively assembled United
----------------------------------------------------------------------

And which of those teams overall looked more coherent tactically, more like the sum of its parts, and with more players suited to the jobs they were doing - Brentford in 22/23 or United in 23/24? Brentford were significantly the better team in terms of underlying stats. Much better goal difference, expected goal difference etc.

I'd be delighted to have Toney at United. It's indeed too much to rely on a youngster as the primary centre forward. But United have got into the current mess by locking in too much in future salary commitments on players at and just after their peak. It means we aren't in a position to assemble a squad without significant gaps right now. And it also means we need to be disciplined about buying players who still have potential to realise, on lower wages, who can be expected to appreciate in value, and if they don't work out they won't be such costly mistakes and won't be so difficult to move on.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I know you've had your troubles but i would expect the quality of the likes of Bruno & your wide players to be better than what Brentford have to offer.

If Toney goes to CFC I would expect him to out score your strikers and probably deliver more assists too - assuming he gets decent game time.

Stop helping Chelsea out of their troubles. Let them have Sancho for a decent fee or don't let him go there at all. I'd even let him go there on loan with obligation to buy clause.

We don't want Sterling. His best days are behind him and even then I don't think he was that great. He just played in an excellent team that gave him chances.

Don't think he's ever scored against United either has he in something like 20 games. That's woeful given how bad we have been at times.

What's wrong with sterlings attitude?

posted 3 weeks, 2 days ago

I'm not advocating for Sterling as such but, if it's a way to move on Sancho and there's no other way, then I'd take it.

By all accounts he doesn't have a bad attitude and he does know where the goal is. He's also done far more in the PL, and the game, than Sancho.

If the figures work then I'd be willing to give him a chance. Not every signing we make has to be young etc.

The best solution of course would be to sell Sancho outright and buy a quick, versatile attacker.

If we could sell Sancho and get Sterling on loan on reduced wages it would be a decent deal.

I'd certainly take sterling on a loan with reduced wages. He's still a good player, in the right team. This attitude thing is from the media.

United will pay the 300k plus which is the only reason he would want to go there

The proven ones continue to hurt my eyes with their foolish inaccuracies in passing, production and general basic football.

Never been a fan of Sterling and I don't want him here at all...... however the silver lining is Antony will probably leave before the deadline even if that's only on loan. I can't imagine he's going to want to be our 5th best wide option.

Still think this stinks of getting one huge expensive flop out the door and getting another in though. Is Sterling going to come to Utd and take a wage drop? Unlikely.

He was a great player. I think there was a period of a couple of years where only Messi had more goal contributions.

He's been in decline for a while now though and it would be idiotic to go near him. I'd hope for better from Ineos and their people.

posted 3 weeks, 2 days ago

These swap player deals get mentioned every transfer window, how many actually happen?

I wouldn't want Sterling, I wouldn't say he's much of an upgrade on a fit and happy Sancho (something we'll never see in a united shirt). I'd be very surprised to see INEOS doing a deal like this, they'll take whatever fee they can for Sancho, he's not their fault so no blame for them with the loss.

Juan Mata was a great guy but never really landed for us. He had a few stellar moments but mostly he wasn't the same player he was for Chelsea.

Matic again had the odd good game here and there but again he wasn't a huge success.

Mason Mount. What can you even say? He's been a monumental flop.

Why do we want to be the club to help Chelsea constantly refresh their squad and get some of their higher earners off the books?

Imagine having an ex City, Liverpool and Chelsea player in our squad? 😂

INEOS aren't as serious as I thought if they go ahead with this.

posted 3 weeks, 2 days ago

Sterling is a more intelligent attacker than the majority of ours though I'd say. I wouldn't entirely be against it if the conditions were favourable.

posted 3 weeks, 2 days ago

The way I see it, its like finding a reasonable back up to Rashford. Provided it is a loan, we should try it. An injury to any of Rashford, Garnacho and Amad leaves us with Antony. Its not something we want.

Agree with most. Maybe too soon to write off Mount.

BTW I quite like the cut of Nicolas Jackson's jib. If he can develop some composure in front of goal (a big 'if', but there have been plenty of strikers who acquired that ability in time) he'd be an excellent player.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Agree. He's another one where impatience among apparent football fans has crept in. He was 22 years old last season and scored 17 goals in his debut season in a new country.

Maybe I've got rose tinted glasses on but I don't remember football audiences of 10-15 years ago expecting 20/21/22 year olds to be the finished product and being written off and derided constantly (in the way Jackson, Rasmus and so on seem to be).

Both Jackon & Rasmus are doing things at PL and CL level that Toney couldn't do in League One at the same age... (and I rate Toney).

I totally agree

Surely a deal to get Sterling for Sancho helps them more than United and if clubs all just stayed away from Chelsea they'd implode.

Spur s were linked with Gallagher and aside from me thinking he's a crap footballer, i was amazed that Levy would contemplate helping to dig Chelsea out of the hole they have dug.

If people are to take advantage of them them really bend them over....I have no idea why Napoli would spend 30m on Lukaku, when they can go to deadline day and say, we'll loan him for £1m and pay half his wages...CFCs fall back is they end up keeping him and paying him £285k a week to do nothing

David Ornstein has said that it could happen but there's a lot of work to do to get it done before Friday.

That certainly implies there is at least interest from us.
😭

Let's hope there is too much work to be done.

I'm also not sure what signing Chelsea players under INEOS has got to do with the merits or successes of signing Chelsea players in the decade prior to INEOS.

Sterling would probably offer us more than Sancho, but I can't see how it would make sense for us financially unless we took Sterling on loan.

Can he have Palmer for Sancho please, Mr Boehly?

The point I was making is I'd hope they'd be different and not repeat the sins of the past.

I'm still hoping it's all PR and noise and it doesn't happen anyway. Sterling is the last thing we need. We need somebody reliable in front of goal.
