Also we didn't play that many European games before then, under the old qualification rules and competition formats.
No they didnt. No group games and you only played Champs in them days. Busby's teams did well in the European Cup when they qualified. Of course Law had a perfectly good goal disallowed in the 1969 semi leg at OT that would have taken us to a consequtive final, vs Alax in Madrid. Same for the UEFA and ECWC Cup campaigns im the 70s and 80s. It was was it was. But we were undefeated at home during all that time which was amazing. Ajax, Barca, Porto, Juve, Madrid, Milans et al. You cant take that away from United. Unless you want to.
They're 4th and drew today away to surprise package Samsunspor (3rd). Blew two leads too.

It isn’t nearly as crazy a stat as you might think, for various reasons.
1. European club competitions only started in the late 50s, and then English clubs were banned for five years after Heysel.
2. For long periods, we didn’t even qualify for European competitions. There was something like a five year gap in the 60s and an 8 year gap in the 70s. European qualification was the exception rather than the norm.
3. The majority of the sides United played when they did qualify were complete guff. We’re talking the likes of Dukla Prague, Sarajevo, Waterford, Vorwärts Berlin, and Spartak Varna. (No, me either.)
4. The home advantage in those days was spectacular. Often, there were key players who couldn’t travel for one reason or another, so you’d be playing half of a first team and reserves or kit men. The travel itself was horrific. There was no away support. Referees couldn’t communicate with foreign players due to language barriers. League rules were vastly different. The result was home teams winning their games, and the jig was winning your home game by more goals than you lost the corresponding away fixture.
Evidence for this is despite the fact that United were playing dross through most of these fixtures they lost far more away games in Europe than they won until after the Heysel ban (including against the likes of Dukla Prague, Ferencvaros, Górnik Zabrze and Videoton).
United’s home record in Europe until Fenerbahce wasn’t really unique or spectacular.

LOL
Except we never lost any of the games we did play until we played Febernache in 1996. This is the point.
Im not saying here old football was better. Or worse for that matter. Euro football pre PL and CL was what it was. United were terrible away from home in the lesser UEFA and ECWC competitions we qualified for in the 70s and 80s. United would get easily undone abroad by class teams like Juve Ajax ASSE who had players like Platini and Boniek Gentile Bettega etc. Busbys United had better form away in the 50s and later in the 60s in the European Cup games. George Best unlocking the door famously at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium by single handedly running rings around RM. But still usually at home we were different gravy. We even had to play one home tie v ASSE at Plymouth Argyle which was bradcast live (in Black and White) on huge screens in OT... but we still won.
For United and supporters in those days it was a proud undefeated record that Febernache who we are up against now, finally ended in 96. And I dont think many United fans would have thought it would have been them. That is all.

United’s home record in Europe until Fenerbahce wasn’t really unique or spectacular.

alot of the Eastern Euros teams you mentioned were decent back in the day
pre-bosman & before the eastern bloc ended the distribution of talent was much more even across the europen leagues than it is now

This is true, before football was completely ruined by greed.

Honestly, I think we will be ok for this match. I feel slightly more confident about us in European games than in the league right now, and it's the type of game where we will stumble to some sort of result, be it a draw or win

They're 4th and drew today away to surprise package Samsunspor (3rd). Blew two leads too.

Samsunspor seem to make it easy to blow leads, that's why I switched to Panasonicspor. Now no problem with leads.

First team ever to beat Man United at Old Trafford in any European competition in 1996.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
1996 was the 1st time we lost at home in Europe was 1996?!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
absolutely.
We were good once.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That stat still amazes me.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It isn’t nearly as crazy a stat as you might think, for various reasons.
