Hojlund comments last night:
“I think the new system and new ideas are suiting my style of play,” said Hojlund. “I still try to do the same, but obviously we play a different sort of football and system now.
“I've played this sort of football, I don't say it is the same, but a 3-4-3, I used to play that at Atlanta a little bit the same. I just try to do my job every time I step on the pitch. I think I showed last season, with being top scorer for the team, that I can score goals.
“I'm still very young, but obviously I would like to take the responsibility and that's why I also took the No.9 shirt this year, because I think I want to take it to the next level and the next step. But yeah, I still have a lot to grow. I'm still not the finished article. I'm only 21.
“I think I've improved on sort of holding and getting my back to the goal play, and I think it comes with age. Last year I had to learn the Premier League and these sorts of things. I think I get better with these sort of things every time I step foot on the pitch.”
Asked if he had a goal target in mind this term, after bagging 16 last season, Hojlund said: “No, I just try to improve every day and then score as many goals as possible when I play.”
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Absolutely nothing wrong with any of that. Sounds like a good lad and he's got his head screwed on. 👍
He will improve too of course he will. Would be difficult really for him not to. I just don't see that we've got a Harry Kane, Lewandowski, Benzema etc on our hands
here. Don't think he's going to be at that level. Right now though his level is the best we have.

Garnacho and Rashford are going to struggle if we play two number 10's. It's just not their game.
In second half last night he tweaked it and allowed Garnacho to play on the wing a bit more and it definitely improved us even if he wastes the chances he got.
Don't think playing two narrow tens with the current options we have at wingback is going to work at all. That will obviously be fixed next summer though.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think Garnacho has the time to develop into that role. You seem to be overlooking how young both Hojlund and Garnacho are. Neither are going to be the finished article just yet.
Shaw would be a good wingback option if he could actually stay fit.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Garnacho's best assets don't lend well for him to becoming a top number 10. I actually like him as a player but he is what he is. His best position is out wide and I don't see that changing personally.
We've got a new system and a new formation and we've got square pegs for round holes which is to be expected. After a few windows I don't think that will be the case though.
I don't see Garnacho completely changing his entire game to become a top number 10.

I'm not convinced Hojlund is going to be our number 9 for the next 5-6 years. Just don't think he's good enough myself.
--------------------------------------------------------
I don't know how any of us could be equipped to draw this conclusion after one season joining a much tougher league as a very young and raw player, coming into a team in chaos that didn't know how it wanted to play and certainly wasn't playing to the specific strengths that made him stand out at Atalanta - and recorded one of the best shot conversion rates in the league.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's an opinion. We are all entitled to them. As you know a big opinion you had recently didn't turn out too well did it?
I think he's clearly our best option for now as I said. We shall find out I suppose about the long term prospects and as I said to Elvis......a lot will depend on Amorim's budget. If he gets a generous transfer kitty like Erik got twice then I wouldn't be shocked at all if we signed a top name striker.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Please be assured that when I disagree with you, I'm not attacking your right to express your opinion.
2) Your persistent lying about me being ETH-in when I continually said he deserved to be sacked is unhinged behaviour.

He's good at converting chances but him not getting many chances can't simply just be everyone else's fault.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He had 38 shots in the PL last season. Rashford had 62 and Garnacho had 100.
When you're wide attacking players are taking so many more shots than your no.9 then it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realise that there it s problem.
Rashford's shot conversion rate was 1 in 8.9.
Garnacho's was 1 in 14.3.
Hojlund's was 1 in 3.8.
Nearly every game we are on the match thread bemoaning how many good positions Garnacho and Rashford waste and how they shoot when they should pass. And yet still people point at Hojlund and blame him. I just don't get it.
Let's give the lad some consistent service before writing him off at 21.

Amorim on Hojlund:
"I think he improved the connection, I think he has to improve more because sometimes he gives too many touches when he holds the ball," the 39-year-old explained.
"But it’s very important for us because when we are in a low block he is the guy to hold the ball and connect for transitions. He did that very well, he has those characteristics.
"He was aggressive in the box, he is a quality player. I think he scores the more difficult goals. He has a lot to improve, it’s the same for every player, but he did a great job today."

Not writing him off mate. I said he's a decent player which he is. I also said he's our best current number 9 which again is true.
I just don't think he's going to be the long term solution from what I have seen and I think the first chance Amorim gets he will sign a top striker.

.................
But you have written him off. And that is fair and obviously your opinion.
You may well end up being right as well. The law of averages will certainly favour you.
For now though just enjoy the way he played yesterday and hope that he can improve on the things the manager has said he needs to work on.
From the team perspective, though, it is as clear that we have to give him the ball more in the box.

You're confusing writing someone off with them not being top drawer. That's the issue here Elvis. There's a difference and you don't seem to be grasping that.
Take Rashford for example......I have always been a fan of his but I have never called him world class because he simply isn't. He's got too many weaknesses in his game to fit that description.
Don't confuse the two. Hojlund is a decent player but I just don't think he's going to be world class. That's not really a huge criticism at all. Not many forwards are world class. 👍
We are one of the biggest clubs in the world and eventually I think we need to bring in a top striker to name that role and Hojlund can be a more than capable back up. 👍

Hopefully he gets a start against Everton and can get on a bit of a run. He certainly receives off balls into the box, which didn’t do enough under ETH. He took his chances well. He leads the line far better than Rashford who I think will struggle in this system.
The options at wing back are going to be a big issue for us, int he first half we consistently got the ball out to Malecia and Antony but they’re toothless, Dalot was even worse.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeh I think that the wide areas are going to be the priority. I expect that a LB and a no.10 will be his priority signings, but we will see.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Wingbacks for both sides, another number ten, and at least one CB before he looks to upgrade Hojlund I think.
We may bring in another nine if Rashford goes in the summer, but it’ll be a backup rather than a starter I think.
The bulk of the money will be spent out wide though I reckon.

In terms of goals, Amorim will be more bothered about his tens getting into double figures and others chipping in than Højlund smashing 25+.

For Rashford to leave he's going to have to take a monumental pay drop to make that happen. Could happen but it's not too likely is it? Nobody in PL is going to sign him I don't think so what are his options?
I too feel like it might be time for a new start for him but I just don't see an obvious escape route sadly.

Maybe so......don't think we can play with two tens just yet though until we upgrade the wingbacks as you implied.
The good thing about 343 is its flexible. You can play narrow with two tens and you can play it wide with two wingers / wide forwards.

He’ll stick to his model, though. And the width there comes from the wingbacks, which stick to the touchline in the middle half of the pitch. We’ll see some combinations and switching between the tens and their respective wingbacks, but the tens will overwhelmingly play inside.

He was always likely to be the real deal for the EPL - coming from a competitive northern European league coaching system and all that.
That was never really the issue.
The real issue was the same as it was for Lukaku and Depay i.e. getting others around him that had genuine footballing intelligence.
And apart from Fernandes, Mount and Garnacho (at the moment) that just isn't happening - nor is it likely to happen with what is currently available. Eriksen could have been useful but he needed to be 5/6 younger and casemiro was just NEVER equipped to cope with the epl at any age.
The rest are too young to be be properly assessed at the moment, but as the last ten years have proven, so many "potenshuls" have just proven to be products of hyperbole.
Stating the obvious, but the holes need to be filled with, quality, experienced epl players.

Had a good game last night and potentially is the kind of striker that will suit Amorim. Still has a lot to improve in his game, movement not the best, finishing good but not top notch, spends too much time wrestling with opponents but he is still only 21. Hopefully Amorim can help his development and Hojlund seems like a good lad willing to put the work in. He must look at Gyökeres and see how well he’s developed under Amorim.
It was still very naive for the club to put so much pressure on someone so young to lead the line but here we are and hopefully we get the best out of him and he reaches his full potential.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
If Højlund improves under Amorim proportionately as much as Gyokeres has at Sporting, we’ll have an absolute monster on our hands!

If Højlund improves under Amorim proportionately as much as Gyokeres has at Sporting, we’ll have an absolute monster on our hands!
