Win the next two games and the table will look very different. I don't have much confidence in us doing that with GON in charge though.
It's not just bad luck that sees you concede 38 goals in 15 games.
posted 1 week, 5 days ago
Sadly we have two problems in replacing GON.
One is our league position as no Premier League manager with any ambition would want to take over a team in such a dire position.
Secondly we have owners that have said they have no intention of investing new money in the club and are set on selling players of value and signing only potential Premier League players, not established ones.
Could be a sad consequence that there’s no point in sacking O’Neil when we can’t attract anyone better.

If Fosun aren’t going to invest new money in January in order to buy two quality defenders, then I hope they are preparing for life in the Championship.
No combination of our current defensive options is capable of keeping us in the division.
The transfer window was still open when we shipped six goals at home to Chelsea. Absolutely astonishing that we didn’t act then. Unforgivable negligence from the clubs decision makers.
posted 1 week, 5 days ago
I don't think our league position would prevent managers taking over. The chance to manage in the Premier League is a huge draw and any manager with ambition would surely believe they can turn our situation around, as there is a lot of talent in the squad.
The problem is, none of them will look at the situation with the ownership as preferable. They don't believe they will get the support or the freedom to do what they need to in order to progress the club. It is the structure at the club which is preventing us attracting anyone.
posted 1 week, 5 days ago
I also think we should sack GON regardless. I think he is probably one of the worst tacticians and organisers we have ever had. He's turned a group that have some talented players into a shambles that sometimes flatter to deceive due to moments of individual brilliance.
I'd rather take a chance on an up and coming coach than continue as we are at this moment. We are currently pretty much certainties to go down. The whole ethos from the players, manager and club is that we are just unlucky and no one knows what is going wrong. Hardly the best sign that things will change.
I think the risk in bringing someone unproven is the same as keeping GON, but the potential upside is higher as we know what we have with GON and it isn't good.
posted 1 week, 5 days ago
Pretty astonishing isn't it. If the rumours are correct and they've spoken to both Moyes and Potter, clearly neither are up for this particular challenge. Not attractive though is it, 19th, no investment, best players likely to be sold, VAR guaranteed to cost you half a dozen points a season.
I've been resigned to relegation now since last Wednesday, feels ridiculous to write off the season this early but if the club are backing O'Neil amidst this shambles then clearly they've either lost any sense of proper judgement or they've decided they'd no viable candidate and they're going to wait for the right man to come available. Either way we're fooked.
posted 1 week, 5 days ago
Relegation is largely about whether we improve. But also about how other teams do. I’m sure Southampton will go down and I’ve thought all along Ipswich will too, although I may regret saying that on Saturday. Big question is can we improve enough to finish above anyone else. Palace, Leicester and Everton are also poor.
Against West Ham we were not significantly worse than them. Against Everton and Bournemouth we looked every inch a relegation team. Before that we got 8 points from four games.

Interesting article in the Athletic today Steve Madeley quoting anonymous sources within the club says they have been talking to potential replacements since the last International break. The list of coaches that have been sounded out and said nah is Potter, Moyes, Conceciao, Niko Kovac and slightly surprisingly Massimiliano Allegri. We all know why they said no but for the record this is how Madeley's contacts within the club put it. "The reasons for their reluctance vary but Wolves’ owner Fosun’s desire to make the club’s football operations self-sustainable does not make the job attractive to ambitious managers."
There you go.

We will not do any good until Fosun quit. They obviously
Do not care about the team and just want to sit to one side and let the management run the club with them holding the purse strings.
I hope they realise that as a championship club our vale will drop significantly and we could end up in a bhatti brothers situation.
At least all championship games are being broadcast live. I feel sorry for the supporters who have spent good money to watch that tripe.

Not sure what to make of Steve Madeley but it’s true that the reputation Fosun have built is not a great help to the club. Are there any good Chinese managers?
posted 1 week, 5 days ago
I don't get what Fosun's motivation for owning wolves is right now. The Chinese government's incentives to encourage corporate interest in football are no longer there, and they are taking a dim view of Chinese money being siphoned off overseas without return. Fosun will have worked out by now that to make a profit in football is nigh on impossible at a club like Wolves, the brand and it's logo are nice to have i guess, but is an expensive way to achieve something that a decent marketing consultant could have knocked together for a fraction of the cost. They talk of long term commitment and warn us that aspirations should be tempered. I also believe they're not as clueless as the people accusing them of being clueless. These are smart businessmen who clearly understand the consequences of their actions. So are they looking to reset? Endure a season in championship and rebuild as they did before, who knows. The world has certainly changed since they bought the club from Morgan. I also think they saw the revenues on offer without property thought back then of the associated costs. But they're wise to that now so why are they still here and what is their motivation?
Maybe in a similar way to them not being able to find a coach to come to Wolverhampton, neither can they find a buyer.

It is difficult to understand the motivation. It’s almost as though they want Jeff to keep his hobby horse as long as the masters in Shanghai don’t have to worry about the business or put any more money in. They began by saying Wolves could conquer the world and money was no object to saying it must be self financing and that if you want success this is the wrong club to follow. They are on the point now of the club losing an enormous chunk of its value by being relegated through a misguided approach to selling the best players for large fees and using the transfer market to bring in new youngsters to maintain that treadmill. The only motivation for them it seems is to promote the brand in Asia as much through online gaming as football. And to provide a vehicle for Asian companies to promote their brands as is happening with Sudu and Kocowa. Can’t help think Jeff will be hung out to dry if the model he’s developed falls apart through relegation.
